I actually thought Dead Space one and two were pretty creepy, even though it was hardly a survival/horror game in the end.

Haven't found a single scary game. At all.

:p

OT: Penumbra made me yelp, Amnesia made me pause repeatedly, Silent Hill 3 made my skin crawl, Fatal Frame made me afraid to move my character, The Path made me afraid to look around my computer room, and Myst III featured Brad Dourif.

Myst III wins.

AvP2. Marine campaign. That fucking motion tracker

Yeah I found that pretty scary too. But for some reason, the same campaign and motion tracker in AvP from 2010 was not scary at all.

Back when the Gamecube was new, I borrowed Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem from a friend. I played it for a couple hours and then gave it back to him the next day I saw him. I barely remember what I experienced playing it, all I know is that for some reason it scared me, even playing in a perfectly light room(Though I was home alone).

Also, Bioshock. Nothing in particular really made me scream, but like Stalker, it just oozes an atmosphere that puts you on edge.
It's the people. Not the monsters like Big Daddies, but just the regular people. They are so depraved and devoid of humanity. It freaked the shit out of me. I quit playing after only about two hours.

Edit: And couple that with the fact that things happen suddenly (people jumping out from nowhere, lights suddenly turning off and freaky music playing, etc). I'm an incredibly jumpy person. Ask anyone who has had the misfortune of inadvertently sneaking up behind me while also being within my fist's range. I just start swinging. I just can't play horror games. I try to anticipate the jumpy scares, which puts me in a state of constant anxiety.
Oh god, you wouldn't survive a night with Sander Cohen then. It has a load of fantastic jump scares that you can see coming from a mile away, and then they pull a bait and switch on you to make you double scared.

To comment on your splicer part, I think the worst part was that there was still a shred of humanity left in them. Something devoid of humanity is scary, but it can also be put down with righteous force for being an abomination. But when the splicers started begging and appearing like they were trying to resist the madness, you felt more of a grotesque sympathy for them, changing it from an extermination to a mercy kill.

inb4 Amnesia...wait too late.

Scariest game would probably be Bioshock. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but I know I wasn't exactly calm while playing it.

Amnesia didn't scare me. I jumped once or twice, but it's impossible to avoid doing so when things pop out at you. That's not scary, that's taking advantage of human reflex.

Penumbra is definitely one of the scariest games.
Eternal Darkness has some good scares in the and the best breaking the fourth wall scare I have ever seen.
The Void has an interesting dread the sets in when you realize that you made a mistake and you don't have enough color to make it to the next cycle.

Amnesia is jumpy and not nearly as scary as the first Penumbra.

Silent Hill 2, without a doubt. Such an intense atmosphere of dread... the first time I stepped into Brookhaven hospital I couldn't take it - I switched off my computer and didn't continue playing for a full week.

For me, it was Silent Hill: Homecoming. Now I know most of the majority would say, "What are you talking about? That game had bad mechanics and everything! The plot was even bad and Silent Hill is all about the story telling!" True as that may be, the thing that really.. really got to me was when I had to face .. .. Scarlet.

the boss wasn't particularly scary during the actual fight, but the build up to the fight was really well done. I haven't really played any Silent Hill games (watched friends beat Shattered Memories in a night, was really good) but I've always been a fan of the series. Might get Downpour or the HD collection if they drop in price, but I heard the clunky combat doesn't translate to modern gaming well.

OT: the recent Half Life mod "Cry of Fear". It just came out not too long ago, and is really well done despite being made in the HL1 engine. I can't play that game for more than a half hour at a time, the mood is just too unsettling. The coop is fun though (it has a coop, get friends, play the game, shameless promotion). Its a good mod.

Carmaggeddon 64. The horrors.. THE HORRORS. And I used to love the first game on the PC too.

Huh, well I wish I was in your shoes then because for me- it scares me every time even though I have seen how she's defeated and such. Something could be scarier to you then it would to another person. For example, I love bats. Not afraid of them and really find them cute while most people are terrified of bats thus seek them to be burned with fire.

It can also be said I am terrified of spiders and I never want to face them.. while the majority of people can like spiders and admire their skills in hunting prey (even though they mostly like set up web traps and so forth.) So yeah, I admire you're able to handle Scarlet well but for me I do not like the creepiness of dolls.. especially a demonic one that's much bigger and has the scream of a dying child. That's scary to me.
Hey! :3 I think bats are the cutest too. And I hate spiders, like HATE spiders.....even though I'm a guy and shouldn't be due to.....divine law? I dunno, I just can't stand spiders. Not a phobia or anything I can kill a bajillion spiders in a video game no probs, but when it comes to real life spiders I turn into a 5 year old.

When I comes to dolls I think I'm hardened due to playing through Alice: Madness Returns. That game, while good, goes overboard on the dolls.

Not sure if many people here would remember (as it was back in the DOS days) but the original Alone in the Dark sits in my memory as effectively using the art of silence to create an uncertain environment.

And yes, The Cradle in Thief, definitely. As if walking around in a dark, abandoned mental asylum/orphanage was not enough, it managed to disturb you at the psychological level as well.

I've been playing Silent Hill 2 and its been pretty scary so far. I've only just got to the hospital so I think the scarier stuff is yet to come

Fillies and Gentlecolts... I present to you, Fatal Frame!

You WILL shit your pants at 0:23. Keep some toilet paper handy.

If that isn't enough, watch this entire video without ever scrolling down or clicking ahead.

The girly screams scared me more than anything. I just don't see that as scary.
I found the biggest scare was not the floorboards woman(although her flavour text made me fear the cracks in my own floorboards) but the concept of a place that you will be trapped in if you dream about it, in a game designed to cause nightmares.
I wonder if any of those player's dreamt of the manor that night...

Broken Neck Ghost (Fatal Frame 1 I think?) was kinda comical, especially if you enter and exit the room a few times, you see her fall down, again and again

Scariest Game though that is not Amnesia, Clock Tower (SNES) definitely. The only game that I abandoned for months after playing, despite it being almost being a decade old at the time.

I know it's not scary but when I first started to play MW2 online that games scared the shit outta me. I wasn't ready for dudes to be jumping around the corner and knifing me, I'd never had that happen before.

Resident Evil REmake on the game cube. Now first of all I'm not calling any other horrorgames not scary (except dead space) but this one tops all of them. The only game that got close to the dread of REmake was amnesia. Resident evil REmake was the only game that truly made me go "fuck" and then stand still in the same spot for a whole minute or longer because I didn't dare to move towards the creepy banging noise at the end of the hallway or because I knew that the next hallway had 3 zombies and I had 10 handgun bullets left.

this game had SHARKS, an immortal boss roaming the location and most of all crimson head zombies. For those who don't know what they are, in REmake if you kill a zombie (and you didn't destroy it's legs or the head with the shotgun or light the corpse on fire afterwards) they will get back up and be faster and stronger and will RUN AT YOU and their heavy fucking breathing.

that said the best horror games I played silent hill 2,3,4,shattered memories, Resident Evil REmake, 3, 4, amnesia, condemned (2 was fun but doesn't count)

Either Siren BloodCurse or Silent Hill Downpour.

Bloodcurse because of the levels where you play as the little girl, and Downpour because... Well... It's a little harder to describe. You always get the feeling something, somewhere's watching you and you can't stop it.
