My version of scary is going to be a little different. Heart racing scary for me was the drowning sound in sonic 2. I have nightmares where I hear that sound underwater (one of my fears, drowning)
I've played bioshock, resident evil, dead rising, I mean they're pretty scary. But there is nothing like that sound you have 5 seconds to live with a control system that wants to have you die.

Why has nobody mentioned the beachfront hotel in Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines?

Definetly the scariest moment in a game that I've played.
Also, if you like FPSRPG games, then that's definetly one to get (make sure you get the official and unofficial patches aswell, otherwise it's quite buggy).

Also, any point in System Shock 2, much better game than Bioshock tbqh.

Was Sander Cohen that 'art guy' because if he was that was the most screwed up level in the whole game. I hated that whole part as my pants were a shade brown afterwards. After completing his quest and he came out to congratulate me, I took off as soon as I could. Any part of Rapture I wouldn't want to be was in there.
- Yeah it was that bit, with all the killing and the photographing. Funny thing is, at the end of his sadistic quest when he comes down the stairs and appears before you, if you kill him and take a picture you get an achievement called "Irony" :D

i loved that bit in the game, although it was quite weird when you hit one of the sculptures with your wrench and it spurts blood everywere and makes that fleshy sound
also i love his poem about the bunny rabbit thingy and "his f**king ears"

Speaking of 'The Cradle' level from Thief 3, it was designed by the same guy who did that Sander Cohen level from Bioshock. I wasn't particularly scared by the Bioshock level, but the Cradle still gives me the heebeegeebees.

Those monkey zombies in HL2 are always terrifying. And I used to be terrified of Alone in the Dark when I was younger.

Project Zero 3: when you aim at the attic and the girl crawls at you

F.E.A.R: Ending (classic horror movie stuff)

Condemned: The whole department store level and Taking a close up of the gym teachers face

Call of Cthulhu: The boat level

Silent Hill (original): When the body falls out of the locker

the Ocean House level in Vampire:Bloodlines, that house when you see the ghost running and the thing smashing as you pass, damn creeps me out every time, also the attic in Call of Cthulu when you see through the small opening and that thing smashes the door and leaves you unconscious

Scariest moment in a game? Easy. Parasite Eve 2. When you're in Dryfield, in Mr. Douglas's camper, and you hear a woman's scream in the distance. The ensuing scene of exploring the dark, abandoned house to rescue the woman is intensely nerve-wracking, and it doesn't help that the screaming doesn't stop the whole time you're trying to find your way around and that the screams themselves are quite possibly the most disturbing sound effect ever used in a game.

EDIT: Of course, what you find when you finally reach the source of the screams doesn't hurt, scare-wise.

EDIT EDIT: I saw someone mention Call of Cthulhu, and I should mention that as well. The scene when you're exploring the grocery store (or whatever it is) and you realize that someone is coming in, and you have to escape as quickly as possible. That scene scared me so much, not to mention the fact that I died there probably about a dozen times.

Strange to note that the Cradle level in Thief is pretty much my favorite level out of all the games I've ever played. I thought it was simply amazing that they could fit such a rich history into a single level, and I seriously didn't want to leave. I just gaped at the inmates' individual cells, and everything was just way too awesome.

Scariest moment: Call of Cthulhu, where you're woken by people ramming at your hotel door. You run into the next room, bolt the door, open the window, jump to the next building, close the door, push a clock in front of the door, crouch and run through the hallway while the windows explode, make a right, run down the stairs-

And I don't remember. That scene just freaked me out so bad I wound up uninstalling the game.

I'd have to say that a part in Resident Evil 2 when you had passed a window a few times and nothing happened and then suddenly on a random pass by, the window shatters and a zombie grabs you, that made me jump.

The first Resident Evil, when you are walking down a hallway. The camera is on the floor and your walking towards it in complete silence. All you hear is the sound of your own footsteps... then BAMMMM... dogs jump through the glass and music starts blasting. I was pretty young when i played that for the first time and it scared the crap out of me, i dunno if i kept playing that night.

Silent Hill 3: The Mirror Room, and the Mannequin Room.

Basically, the Mannequin Room is a room full of mannequins that lack limbs and such, and one highlighted one that is just normal. In the back of the room there is some ammo, grab it and try to exit the door...You hear a loud scream, and the door won't open.

Go look at the mannequin, it's now headless...and covered in blood. And the others are looking at it. Okay, now you can leave the room of the jealous mannequins.

The mirror room is a room that has to be seen to be understood, really. I played it with my sister in the room, she made me vow NEVER to enter there, EVER again.

(On a side note: Damn it, I just reported someone here by mistake when I hit the report button thinking it was the post one due to distraction.)

Project Zero was awesome. The scary kind that made me want to play more...but that I wasn't able to because I got stuck at the initial part and never figured out to to advance further. Then I just quit.

Also I never finished any of the Silent Hill games. But the very first moment of the SH 1 when you go down the alley and it slowly turns into a nightmare fest, I was so traumatized at that bit for the first time that I had to reset the game. I was kid then though. Also props for Silent Hill 3 for almost giving me the same sensation.

Final Fantasy also spooked the hell out of me. Where? Right when you roamed around under the ocean and you knew Emerald Weapon would pop out at any second. That and me having a phobia of deep water depths also didn't help.

Last but not least, we have the encounter with Lisa inside the cave. Jesus Christ, not only that thing was invincible but it dragged itself slowly around a tiny place you almost had no visibility. And considering you had no idea where she really was, with the moaning and shackle dragging only serving as spook factor, then you were really in for a scare when you passed to the next screen and WHAM!, you get rammed in the face by that inhumane strength of hers and probably die immediately.
Hunter comes in second place in that game for having me walk down an aisle when all of the sudden this green thing jumps at me without any notice and rips my character's head off.

Hmm never played some comdemned or some of them games but Doom 3 officially scared the crap out of me (especially as i played it at night mostly and the fact that the game is so damn dark as well).

The scene which stands out in my mind is near the 3rd level where you walk into a room where the entire floor is covered with corpses and as soon as you step in the lights turn off and its pitch black and you realise that the corpses are now zombies and the only way you can see to shoot them is from the flash of light coming from your last shotgun blast...scariest moment ever so shoot and realise that you just tore one of their heads off and theres another 3 directly in front of you. To this day i havent worked up the bottle to complete that game.

Other than that scary memories come from playing as a really small child for example rayman was just creepy when you happen to be incredibly young. And the ant mission trailer from C&C RA1 stand out as giving me nightmares as a kid.

Ha. I just wanted to get out of there asap. That guy was just insane!

Also, the next Alone In The Dark game should be out soon. Has anyone played the series? I'm wondering why noone has mentioned it yet.

Not really scary per se, sort of frightened me in a very different way. But bloody awesome.

In Shadow of the Colossus, the tenth colossus, the snake one in the sand. Seeing this thing going absolutely nuts everywhere diving in and out of the sand, I was thinking "Jesus Christ what the fuck am I supposed to do here?" So I jump on Agro and start riding around, and it turns at me and slowly begins moving towards me. I proceed to shit my pants and mash the 'x' button as fast as possible trying to make Agro run faster and faster, but this thing just gets closer. And then it's HUGE, beady eyes just emerge from the sand and I got so scared. Then realising I had to somehow control Agro to keep running from it, while aiming my arrow at it's eyes.

So awesome.
