Scariest Moment in a Game?

Personally I'm not the bravest individual when t comes to games, for instance I never played Bioshock because I knew I would probably do something regrettable in my underwear despite my friends assurances that it is awesome.

However personally my scariest moment in a game was actually in Fallout 3 of all games. It was in Vault 108 with the Gary's. For those who have never had the misfortune to enter that place, it is a vault that appears in empty with blood smeared up the walls, then when you go down a level you come across seemingly hundreds, though it was probably only a few dozen, identicle cloned Gary's running at you with Rolling Pins and Hammers and other items.

That particular vault terrified me but I never mentioned it to my friends until it came up in conversation a few weeks later. Turns out everyone else, with the exception of Marcus (who's on here under the user name "Mr. Wiggles"

But that's enough about me, what are the scariest moments you've come across in a game, what made it so scary, and what makes a set of coloured dots on a screen so terrifying. Class Discuss.

Silent Hill 2.
First time I encountered Pyramid head... I was fucking scared and hoping he won't notice me in that damn cutscene.

I found that Vault in Fallout hilarious, "Gary? Gary? GARY?!". But yeah, it would probably be Timesplitter: Future Perfect in co-op mode, running away from a bunch of Carrion Carcasses, watching my mate run into a room, and then shutting the door on my face. You see if your underwear stays clean when your friend refuses to let you into safety whilst you get muled by a bunch of undead cows.

Playing doom 3 at night during the winter with my hoodie on and at the exact moment a monster leap out of the wall at me my cat launced himself onto my shoulder making me littery jump out of my seat and yelling some 4 letter expletives. little fer took 10 years off my life.

2nd place the motion tracker marine campaign in any avp game that damn thing just creeps me out.

Most of FEAR, honestly.

The haunted house mission on Future Perfect was pretty freaky too. Especially the zombies jumping out of cupboards.

And Fallout 3. Many places in that game scared the crap out of me. The aforementioned Gary Vault, for one. And the entirety of the Dunwich Building.

I won't try and count the number of times I've been caught from behind by a Deathclaw, but I jump every single time.

Well, jump scares are a dime a dozen these days, so those don't count in my book. Which leaves the "scared shitless, have to stand in the corner for a while" games. Which I have a few of, because I am a coward. I guess.

FEAR - Man, that game is scary. The worst moment I can think of is when you have to turn on the elevators. You go inside the room where the switch is, turn them on, and when you turn around Alma is standing outside of the room looking in the glass. As she slowly walks towards the side where the door is, I literally froze in place. She disappears around the corner where the door is, and I stand there for a minute before I open it. All you can see is her bloody footprints up to the door. I saved and shut of the game.

Vampire: Bloodlines - The first level, in the haunted mansion. Things moving by themselves, and a creepy ghost in the boiler room almost made me stop playing that awesome game right away. Glad I stuck with it. It is hard as hell though.

Thief 3 - The orphanage. Man, that is one scary level...

Eternal Darkness - The entire game is just... Lovecraftian. I spent a long time beating that game, because it really got to me. The atmosphere is brilliant, and everything is designed to mess with your head. Truly a great game.

You see I first played through the Gary's (to get the bobblehead-I forget which one) alone in the house at 11:30 at night with heavy rain pounding the house. On subsequent playthroughs I have found it much less scary and a little funnier however the fear of that first unexpected encounter with Gary 21 has coloured all subsequent playthroughs.

Yeah I can sympathise with that, ghouls have been known to scare the shit out of me when I play late at night, and then come day time, I find them ammusingly decrepit. xD

There's a scene in Resident Evil where you walk around the mansion. Then there's a long hallway where the camera is shifted so you walk away from it, where it looks from the ground up, and you can't see a whole lot. All of a sudden a Zombie-dog just comes crashing through one of the windows attacking you from behind, really close to where the camera is.

First time that happened to me, I was scared shitless.

Oh, and pretty much all the way through Penumbra.

One that comes to mind right now would be Ravenholm in Half-Life 2. The part where you first met the Fast Zombies, it was utter hell running from them and waiting for the stupid elevator.
