I'm surprised no one has said Ravenholm. Maybe it was just me, and maybe it was the fact that I hit that place just as night fell (And seem to manage as much every time. It's a knack.), but it was pretty terrifying. EDIT: Ah! Ninja'd. Well done, sir.

I had the benefit of only having time to play Fallout after nightfall, and usually no earlier than 11, on my first playthrough. Sitting in an empty house with the oppressive silence of the country all around really provokes a pretty horrifying atmosphere, especially as I stayed away from info on the game. I found my way to Bigtown in the early levels and, being good, agreed to go to Germantown to save the kids. The hype surrounding Super Mutants and the location combined to freak me right the hell out.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I suppose in my last play tho of half life 2, I was going around in some building and one of thoes damn black head crabs jumped out at me and nearly gave me a heart attack and caused me to waste half a clip of smg ammo before I regained composure, had something similar happen in serious sam with a kleer jumping out at me from behind a piller too, wasted some shotgun shells

Mostly, it's the subtle things that scare me in games.

In Dragon age origins, it's well know by now that the character will die in battle after servitude to the grey wardens...but what not is gone into details is leading up to the death itself. You will hear voices, sweet beautiful voices...

"...Come to me my chidren..."

...you want to go...you want to embrace the voice, but you can't! Your damn human/Elven/Dwarf body holds you back, you must meet the voice!

"...Come to me my children..."

...

Yeah, the subtle things get to me.

When I was playing The Godfather on my Xbox 360. There was a huge explosion in the opening cinematics and then BAM!!! I got the RROD on my console. That was so scary I had to stop playing my 360 altogether for, say, ten business days...

Fallout 3 had some great creepy atmosphere and AvP Classic - Marine campaign was tense and nerve-jangling (in part due to your tissue paper armour and the lack of a mid-level save, which made it a proper man's game) but..

The Licker attack in the Interrogation room (with the two-way mirror) in Resident Evil 2. I even knew it was coming, but it's still the only time a game has had me jump to the point of yelling out and throwing the controller across the room.

System Shock 2.

You go to meet the person who's been talking you through escaping a spaceship full of horrible mutants, and it turns out that she's been dead the whole time. The person you were really talking to is an insane AI. Yay, mindfuckery!

You also see all these psychic visions of ghosts, and one of them is of a man committing suicide because he doesn't want to be caught by the mutants and turned into one of them. Not really scary, but pretty disurbing.

id say the first time i ran into the regenerators in resident evil 4. i think its the sound the make that gets to me.
I understand completely what you mean about the sound. The thing that makes a lot of games I play so scary is the noise. So I came up with a genius (if I say so myself) plan. Whenever I play a scary game or a scary section of a game I have the sound on the T.V. just loud enough to hear then play music over the top. Works like a charm. That trick hs let me get through some of the scariest parts of my scariest games.

For some reason the music is nearly always The Killers...strange.

Do jumpscares count? If so, then AvP2(2001). The first Facehugger that jumped at me while wearing the Elsa 3D Revelator....

If not, Eternal darkness had some scary moments, alone in a Mansion with several servants which mith be infectet by demons. Or Call of Cthulhu, the chase level.

its a good idea turning off the sound. but i feel like if you do that it takes away from the excitment of finally killing the monster or beating the part of the game. hell i feel better killing them than the final boss of the game

fatal frame...walking around that mansion then spinning wildly when the cry of "my eyyyyyesssss..." starts out of nowhere
I almost peed myself when that happened.

when you're reading the journal in the upstairs room with Mayu over your shoulder... then she steps back and the woman's ghost is the one behind you. She whispers "Masumi..." in your ear.

I STILL scream when that happens.

For me personally it had to be on my second playthrough of Mass Effect 2 where shortly after recuriting Legion, the suicide mission started up and I was in horror because there were still a few loyalty missions that I had to do. I was nowhere near ready and so in panic I loaded my last save and tried to calm down.

Also I have to mention any giant unkillable monster that you suddenly find yourself trapped with. It's never easy the first time around.

I agree that it can take away from the atmosphere which is why I still leave a little bit of sound on so that I can hear. This means I can hear characters and music however the music is louder so it can distract me. Thus very little of the atmosphere is lost.

I remember venturing down into a crypt In Clive Barkers Undying. There are heaps of bones everywhere, and you know that those heaps spawn Skeletons. You know that once you go down bad things are going to happen, dem bones are gonna getcha good.

I really really didn't want to go down, and from time to time you hear a mocking laughter drift up from the crypt. I inch my way down the stairs, so far so good. Then after I turn a corner the lights go out and undead monstrosities assault you from every direction, PANIC!
