Portal. Actually when I was playing a level thinking of how to solve the puzzle, I was getting a bit scared. I mean you're isolated from civilisation, the environment you're in is covered in white tiles, and the only voice your hear is a robot instructing you solve puzzles and there's no human what so ever. I was getting paranoid 8(. And that moment when she sends you to the oven.

Lots of things in Oblivion, when you sneak through a house when the owner is asleep, you turn around and BAM hes right there, standing there, staring, just staring and then he follows you to the door as you run in panic.
Also just yesterday I was doing a fighters guild quest, the one where you have to find another some lost people and the cave is full of trolls, I found a dead end with a chest , I open it take the loot, start to walk away and a troll comes down from the ceiling!

Oh and need I say it, you steal something, you walk out the door into the street and you hear the dreaded words "STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!"

The mines from the first Gothic game. Dark, covered in webs and inhabited by minecrawlers. Eugh.
Actually, there was a crypt under a stone circle (and I think another one in Gothic 2) that was good for a scare.

Failing that, let us not forget:

Thief 3 - The Cradle.

That bit in Half-Life 2 a little after you get Dog to open the gate for you. After the dropship carries him away and the setting is dead quiet, you hear this:

<youtube=sxLPnMrEvkM>
You enter the nearby building and spot a TV that briefly flashed the G-Man on it. At that point, I associated that radio as the leitmotif of the G-Man.

It's a bit hard to put into words. You kinda have to play it yourself to get that sense of creepiness.

Another example I found comes from Kirby: Canvas Curse in

World of Drawcia. It doesn't even need explaining:

That music in the background is probably one of the scariest things I've encountered in a non-horror game. Also, there are pictures that stare, grin, and laugh at you. WHAT ARE THEY LAUGHING ABOUT?!
my god yes, that radio... in game i didn't notice it as much, but a little while ago i listened to that music on its own, and i tell you i was checking over my shoulder and everything. Definitely got me paranoid feeling.

i'd have to say the bridge in half life 2, the one that you clamber across the railings of. i'm a bit scared of heights, and suffice to say, that got to me.

also, water. i don't know exactly what it is i've played when i was younger, but water tends to creep me out in games, depending on the circumstances.

Kind of a sissy thing, really, but in Pokemon Platinum, Giratina, a simple shadow with glowing red eyes, jumps RIGHT AT THE SCREEN SCREAMING LIKE AN AXE MURDERER.
Gave me the willies.

I remember the dream sequences from the first Max Payne. I remember theres a bit where you have to follow a trail of blood thats like a maze, but if you fall off a baby screams. It probably doesn't, but it definitely felt like each time you failed, the scream was louder and went on for longer. When I first played it when I was younger, I had to mute the TV to be able to concentrate enough to succeed.

I know people have mentioned it a hundred times but Half life 2: We Don't Go To Ravenholm. Had to pause the game countless times - especially the street of a thousand zombies where they just kept spawning so there was no comfort in knowing you'd cleared out the entire area ... HL2 just gives me this abject sense of loneliness for a lot of the game which is great for atmosphere but bad for the bladder.
Also ME2 whenever a random Husk suddenly runs at me - I hate zombie things!!

The Original Jak and Daxter, where the Lurker shark would eat you if you went out into open water. i remember the rising pulse rate that would play, and how it was almost impossible to get out of water to escape it.
i also distinctly remember how me and my bestie would scream, shout, and panic whenever we heard it, and to freak him out, i used to make beating sounds with my throat to make him think he was in danger :p
it was a lovely friendship

New vegas's expansion dead money. No, not the ghost folk, no, not the sad pre war story, not even the disturbing ending of getting locked in a vault and being turned into a hologram, forever. It was when father Elijah told you you were just a slave to your pip boy, that it was just dulling your brain. A crutch. Made even creepier when God tells you even it can't save you. Oh, and the big empty when the bald scribe chick explains it. AND, fan someone just explain the cradle (Thief) to me? I cant look it up right now...

In Hitman: Contract's there's a mission in a hotel, I was wandering round the hotel rooms when a ghost walked out. Yes, that's right. A ghost in Hitman, I totally wasn't expecting it and jumped.

Do I win?
yup this wins, hate that music, still makes me panic and die faster.
ah, shit. When I first played this game, the night after I heard that music I had a dream I suddenly went blind and drowned with that playing over and over and over again. Suffice to say, never beat it.
