The radio in Silent Hill

Minecraft creeper hiss

Half Life head-crab screech

and this is probably just me but the missile lock on noise from Freelancer.

Once in Minecraft I'd built and underwater house. It was in the middle of the ocean, 30-40 blocks underwater, made mostly of glass so I could see everything around me. Then one day, while I was crafting, I heard a moo...

When its unexpected yea, otherwise the lock sound just makes me start mashing the CM button and flying like a drunk goose on crack.

In Amnesia, I find that screeching sound that plays when a monster has actually spotted you to be the most jarring of all.

Note that the video isnt representative of actual gameplay there- the player character should be going insane the more he sees the monster. Just play it for the sound then don't bother trying to sleep for a week.

The sound of the regenerators in Resident Evil 4. I heard one the first time I played it and ended up running round a corner right into it. Dropped the controller and ended up munched by it. Not a fun moment.

Not necessarily all that scary... but I absolutely adore what Irrational have done with the sound design for the Songbird in Bioshock Infinite.

The Sonic Drowning Theme. You all know the one!
And let's not forget "SNIP SNIP SNIP" from the Clock Tower games.
In Heretic, the Disciples made a pretty sinister muttering sound IIRC.
Hespith's poem in Dragon Age: Orgins. Bloody nasty stuff.

And finally, the most terrifying noise of all - the one that makes armed men recoil in horror....

Inge Wagner's singing from No-one Lives Forever....

For me it wasn't so much their sound as the music that started up once you got one's attention. I get too scared to even look around a corner. Mainly the first time they come at you in pairs.

That and I think just about every sound made in Doom 3 when I wasn't fighting had me flailing my flashlight around like a nutcase.

So amnesia as is one huge audio freak out fest?
....*thinks about it for a moment*.....yeah, pretty much. The visuals are kinda cool, but it's the audio that really loosens your sphincter.

Lu Bu's theme in any Dynasty Warriors game.

Because it means Lu Bu has arrived...and that's scary in its own way.

Also the sound of a Chaos teleporter opening in W40K: Fire Warrior is creepy, it sounds like a person screaming, a metal door scraping on a surface and aeerie wind blowing around at the same time. Plus everytime you hear it, you know that a Chaos enemy is gonna appear, and they don't always appear from the actual teleporter.

Pretty much all the ambient howls and creaks from that level are daunting, but I was SO afraid to open that door...
EDIT: Also, don't know what that stupid 'pop' noise at about :20 is, but it's not there in the game. =P

Silent Hill 2 in the apartment building... I'd just figured out a puzzle and I was happily running down the hallway back to the room to solve it when I was stopped in my tracks by the most terrifying scream I have ever heard.

That pretty much takes the cake for me.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a video.

"First day, they come and catch everyone.
Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.
Third day, the men are all gnawed on again.
Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.
Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn.
Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.
Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.
Eighth day, we hate it as she is violated.
Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.
Now she does feast, as she's become the beast."

Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dreams.

That and that bloody radio in Silent Hill.

The fast leaping zombies from HL2, their screams are just chilling - especially in We don't go to Ravenholm.

basically, yes. And in the rare moments that everything goes silent, it's even scarier X(

Another vote for the radio static in the first Silent Hill. That scared me more than any amount of Resi's surprise zombies. That's why I loved those games - your own brain was your worst enemy.

I may not have played Amnesia, Silent Hill or (gasp!) Minecraft, but this is absolutely the winner for me. I had to turn this level off and only came back to Deadly Shadows two months later. Going up the stairs to the attic is just so tense, particularly when you get this close. Horrifyingly good audio and probably the tightest single level of any game I've ever played.
