Nope. Never. Female characters exclusively. Especially in a fan-service game.

Why play a service game as the only conservatively dressed character-- let alone a `male` character? Might as well play something else altogether!

This is ridiculous. Want to do skimpy properly, do it like TERA.
Where the guys are hotter than the girls.
That's half the reason I love TERA, everyone is sexy! (Except the badger people and the toddler fairies) my warrior runs around in a top that doesn't really seem to be more than a few straps showing off his glistening muscles.

So either those girls are all lesbians, or they simply enjoy playing sexy characters. *shrug* Takes all sorts, right? We shouldn't assume that an entire gender all wants well-covered and well-rounded characters.
Aye, this seems to be true for both genders.

I never deal in absolutes! :p

I'd guess it has something to do with guys wanting to have the tool to thrust at all the women (regardless of the person playing as that woman as some will be guys) that will inevitably flock to him (and likely try to use him somehow), and he can be safely assured in his masculinity in his dealings with them.

It might be a cheap shot at inclusivity to appeal to more people. I mean it seems about as half assed as when this happens to women.
We all know there's those people that freak right the hell out when they learn the womn they're lusting after is a guy, or even the remote chance of it... even in a game like Scarlet Blade. They prolly assume every player is a woman, and expect to be able to chat them up for what ever reason until they find out there's a guy behind that avatar. Then the hate and vitriol happens. I haven't beeen there, but I'd bet my bottom dollar there's atleast -one- thread on their forums asking about why guys play as women in games made by people who are hostile to the idea.
Kinda like those people that go into a topic about something they hate just to say they hate it, and pick a fight, or sumfin.
Those people aughta be included, too! >.>

A poor shot at fanservice for women, maybe? I could buy that unlikely event, but only just. I mean if it was a shot at women, obviously, there'd be more variety of guys, and they'd be less conservatively dressed. I mean heck, even as a lesbian, I can find Terry Crews, and David Tennant, practically opposites on the scale of buffness among other physical qualities, attractive.

I can say that odds are really good a minority of women at best will play as the guy unless he really offers something practical. It makes me doubt heavily that it's for women all things said and done. Then again, women have sexual fantasies, too, so women might play as guys to dole those out?

Hey, maybe they actually got bombarded with hatemail calling them sexist for not having guys, so they added them? That possibility makes me sad, though. :/
If it's that easy for a guy to be added to an all women game, then I gotta envy that because the reverse sure doesn't seem true!

I'm open to other ideas/motives here! :p

You'll have to pardon the bleak tone of my reply. I'm not a misandrist, honest! I don't hate guys! I just have a very dim view of most situations, especialy relating to the game industry in general, and have a mild case of misanthropy where I hate people coz they act like scumbags around/to me.

I wholly agree. Man, woman, hermaphrodite, etc., pretty much everyone will want to play in the gutter sometimes! Metaphorically speaking.
Some will enjoy it more, some less, some will stay in the gutter, some will just vacation there. :p

Wait, what the hell was that mech in the background?! THIS GAME HAS MECHS?!

I must learn more, I love games with mechs, even if they are fanservicy
When I first saw the thumbnail of a screenshot of this game my first thought was "wow that looks like an awesome mech!" I then enlarged it and saw the naked woman hanging out the front of the thing which was...rather creepy. Especially the one with the whip. That's nightmare fuel for me right there.

It's actually not that hard. The misconception that what women find sexy is so mysterious and hard to nail down stems from decades ago when female sexuality was largely discouraged and promiscuous women were considered a social taboo, it was hidden then out of social pressure. As female sexuality becomes more open, multiple studies have found similarities and commonalities for female attraction as well and an enormous number of parallels with men. It doesn't get pandered to in media often because males are still the primary content creators, there are still almost no female directors, or project leads, its getting better but the discrepency in many fields can range as high as 90% male dominated.

We see the difference between attraction to bishounen characters and romance novel men, and throw up our hands and say, "see they are attracted to totally different types of men how can we pander to that?" but how is that different from some men finding sterotypical moe anime girls hot, and men finding cougars and MILF women the height of sexy. We say that women are more attracted to nebulous mental qualities and don't care so much about physical appearance, this is a bullshit excuse because we are made uncomfortable by the idea of male sexuality as it is often confused with homosexual portrayals or media (hint hint maybe that's why females are often made uncomfortable with their portrayal in games, it rubs up into that same area where men are made uncomfortable by their own gender being sexy and calling it gay). Even then, men are on this site every day complaining about brainless female portrayals and how they find fleshed out characters much more attractive. How is attraction to Tsunderes, housewives, or the shy submissive somehow more obvious and easy to pander to than the brooding mystery man, the flirty playboy, or the sensitive nurturer. I live in Nevada where we have an abundance of male strip clubs and they are packed nightly, so trust me when I say there are a lot, and I mean A LOT of women who are perfectly willing to just sit there and ogle a tight jiggling ass.

Also for the last time male power fantasy shares many points of attraction with what females consider sexy, the difference is in the presentation not simply the physical traits. Marcus Fenix doesn't strip off his armor for a gratuitous shower scene, Nathan Drake doesn't have the camera linger on his ass in cutscenes while he slowly rubs his chest and abdomen, Jason Brody and vaas don't end up wrestling in slow-mo while suggestively grinding their hips together during a cutscene. Just as a female power fantasy can be sexy, the difference is in how the medium treats their portrayal of the character, nobody is going to call a character with DD breasts sexualized if she spends the whole game in a suit of power armor, or covered in the ashes of her dead family while she slaughters people for revenge.

Female attraction is not that hard, it just makes some men uncomfortable, and it is much harder for a man to write or draw something that is sexy for an orientation that isn't his own. Female writers and artists often have the same problem, romance books will quite often have scenes where you can blatantly tell the female (or gay male) author is trying to write a sexy woman and it just comes off awkward and sort of uncomfortable for everyone involved.

Which is why I don't blame the Scarlet Blade devs, they are pandering to a specific audience, and changing that would probably cause more trouble than any potential gain in female players.
You made my day. Dispersing the fake stagnant mist of olden mystery a lot of people still believe to be there to show that there was just a discarded bag of mummified potatoes behind it. And the imagery I got assaulted by while reading your examples of male sexualization made me laugh my ass off.
This. Seriously, every person in the world should read this and just get done with the blind flailing at "feminazi" and "perverted swine" that are actually just mills built atop the hills of their own ignorance.

And while it's certainly not on me to judge, we shouldn't assume that an entire gender's sexual fantasy are androgynous Japanese anime boys either. Looking back at all the Sexiest Men Alive, a bit more pandering to women [in western games] might not change all that much.

I think they've missed a trick here. You know how you can buy content to make all the female characters naked? Well, they should have made the male character naked with a massive swinging schlong and made people pay to have them clothed.

You definitely have a bright future waiting for you should you join the industry.

It should be a bear of a male.. hairy and big. Wearing in skimpy mode only a leotard slip. You want to see all that fat and muscle ripple right before your eyes.

*waits till people are done vomitting*

Done? Good! Because lets be fair.. it is kinda hard to excuse the pretty cheap way SB is doing its things. I guess they end up with some kind of fairy elf male. It would fit with the rest!

Of course they wouldn't get out the bear. No that would be to disturbing!

Yes in the end it are just pixels and eh they have the right to play this game. And sex still sells right?

I'm pretty sure guys would run around naked all the time, humping everyone in sight, fighting bosses naked, etc. Now I want a MMO with DICK PHYSICS so I can run around fucking with other players. I also want to be able to spend stats points in dick size, so people will be even more frightened when they see me coming.

I'm afraid this business idea, as smart as it looks at first glance, might not work out as intended either.

Sure, I'd pay for that, but since no one forces me to play Scarlet Blade in the first place, I'm glad I don't have to.
