I was astonished that I liked the American version better. The Japanese one wasn't edited very well, and everyone was psychic. Well, maybe not everyone, but pretty close.

Me as well Larenxis, the book is superior, but the American film is just so much better shot.

Yeah, I agree too. I don't know why but I just wasn't scared by Ring. A much better example of the same sort of film is The Grudge- way creepier and with a far more vicious spirit. You have to see the original though, since the American version is apparently awful.

I've seen some of the trailers for teeth, seems like it would only be a scary film for guys though. It's pretty obvious why.

.. movies can disturb me delightfully and I take the opportunity to do so as often as possible with worthy titles like:

- Irreversible
- Tetsuo: Iron Man
- Eraserhead
- Videodrome
- Ichi the Killer
- Audition
- Dead Ringers
- Blue Velvet
... and many more

If those are new titles to anyone, I'd suggest checking them out on amazon or IMDB for the gist. None of these are really 'horror' movies in the conventional sense, but they all have a respectively unique talent getting under your (i.e. my) skin.

Audition is the greatest movie ever. When my husband and I first saw it, it messed me up for a good day. I've told everyone I know to watch it.

Ichi the Killer isn't really "horror" per se, but it is definitely messed up. I was told by a friend of a friend that it was "so scary" and when I got a copy for myself, I realised what it was: an arterial slash "b" movie. Don't get me wrong, its freaking great...but I found myself laughing my ass off through most of it.

Good horror should mess you up mentally, not just throw a bunch of gore at you. Asian movies seem to get this right, since the writing and style of these movies are so much different than "hollywood" horror (maybe this is cultural, since there is much more fokelore in Japan that can be used in this kind of fashion). Audition (most Takashi Miike films for that matter), Dumplings (3 Extremes) & Tale of Two Sisters come to mind just from my own collection.

I'm probly gonna be flamed for this, but The Blair Witch Project was pretty good, in my opinion. Had the whole "can't really see the monster, fill in the blanks with your imagination" thing going for it. And it was pretty original.

Could Cloverfield be considered a horror movie? I quite liked that as well.

For others that have been mentioned, Alien, The Mist, The Thing, The Grudge, Dawn of the Dead, are all great. And I've always wanted to see Old Boy. And there's this one called Funny Games that I recently heard about that sounds very intriguing.

Evil dead is the scariest movie I've seen, but then again, I don't watch to many horror films.

Evil Dead I, II, and Army of Darkness are comedy films, not horror.

Evil Dead I is a horror movie, watch it again and you should agree that there's nothing Raimi put in as a joke, but the second movie had a gear change. 'Tis all good, though.
On topic, I believe any movie Uwe Boll has directed has been a nightmare from his first day in the chair.

I haven't seen anything remotely scary of late to tell you the truth, it's all just either torture porn or a gore-fest. Having been raised on a steady diet of 70's, 80's & 90's horror I find nothing really shocking. The last movie I found genuinely disturbing was 'Requiem For A Dream'. The last movie that genuinely scared me was 'Event Horizon'. Neither are what I'd call "horror".

Dude, don't joke about that! The acting, the strings, the dialouge in Plan 9 had me on the edge of my seat (ready to turn off the movie). Scary.

yeah i didn't mind it, i would have liked it better if i didn't have 1789047123948137048932714 telling me about it before i saw it

the cool part about it was the actors had no clue about the night scenes, it was the director and his buddies terrorizing them in the middle of the night, so those screams of terror are real

on another side note, the director must be a fan of cannibal holocaust cause they did the same thing in that movie, tried to say it was real

sci-fi/monster movie ala godzilla/gojira, not horror

the thing about horror is it's not always supposed to be scary, there's a lot of times it's supposed to be shocking and make you squirm and go "ewwwwwwwwwwww that's nasty"

i didn't mind captivity it was pretty good, had some good momments in it

also i didn't mind wrestlemaniac, it's pure cheese but so good, it has Rey Mysterio in it too, the original one, not Rey Mysterio Jr, who is in the wwe right now and has dropped the Jr off his name

Also Jacobs Ladder is great, especially if you like the Silent Hill Series.

God I love scary movies, especially the classic ones like Alien/s, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th.

I loved 28 days later. Each time I hear In The House/In a Heartbeat (song). I start looking outside to worry if an infected comes.

Yea 28 days later is one of my favourite films, not because its especially scary, just because it's so well done with the choice of music, camera work and actors all being brilliant. Makes for some very atmospheric viewing which makes it all the more enjoyable.

I'd also recommend Grindhouse to all of you that have not seen it yet, that really is brilliant, and be sure to catch the moc movie trailers in between films too.

That is a messed up film.
Last Broadcast id recomend for fans of Blair Witch, since its where BW got the idea from
The Woods suprised me for being quite decent (and it has BRUCE CAMPBELL in it.)
Bubba Hotep is also a great film, if very silly (and more Bruce Campbell)
The Ringu trilogy are pretty good too, 3rd one is underated IMHO

The one film that instantly comes to mind for being pants-shitting scary is aliens. Im scared of facehuggers.

The original "One Missed Call" from Miike had pretty heart stopping shock effects, but was generally better in being a bit of a subtle spoof to all the "technology and little girl ghost movies" like the Ring.

Also, the Ju-On Movies have marked me pretty badly, and the girl who plays the ghost mother in the movies deserves some kind of prize for being so damn effective. Then again, nowadays i do not find them as scary as i used to. Except of course, there happen to be bunch of cats fighting or having sex (or whatever cats do making these awful noises) close to my window ^^.

Also, kudos for Marebito. Not particulary scary most of the time, but very spine-chilling throughout.

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot Jacobs Ladder...now THATs a scary movie!

P.S.: Am i the only one who found the ending of "the Mist" extremely cheap? (at least like, the very last 30 seconds or so...if you seen it you know what i mean)

Not to mention predicatable and a bit depressing...its been about a year since i read the story, but im pretty sure the ending wasnt nearly so bad.

I'd been perfectly fine with Thomas Jane just killing the remaining survivors and being unable to kill himself, but the whole "HA! If you had waited for 10 Seconds everything would have been alright!" is cheap and unrealistic (in terms of timing). I would have found it much more effective and depressive to leave it like it is, the "Twilight Zone" end that was probably just there because Frank Darabont wanted to make the whole thing more shocking just killed the atmosphere, and my suspension of disbelief.

BTW. I think the short story just ended with the "non-sect-lunatic" survivors leaving the supermarket and driving down a freeway seeing the big lovecraftian creatures in the distance

Yeah that's right, i remember. Yay for Lovecraftian Horrors. OOOH which reminds me: Reanimator- its fucking hilarious. Would be nice for someone to do a decent Lovecraft adapation, though on reflection, since some of them rely on unseen or hinted at horror, might be a tad difficult.

I used to be REALLY easy to scare even shaun of the dead scared the hell out of me lol but i got over that. I really prefer the retro horror films like friday the 13th or Nigthtmare on Elm Street but i also like to watch Jhorror as well

I don't get scared easily when watching a movie, my "this isn't real" switch is usually on during these things, last time I got scared was in 28 days later when the car alarm went off, I always find myself looking at the situation and wondering "What would I do in this situation?" my usual answer to this is wait and ambush them the a killing instrument of some kind, this basically makes the movie kind of boring to me.

I don't usually like "horror" films, but this scared the crap out of me mostly due to great atmosphere rather than being gruesome and making me jump all the time. Which it still did a little bit admittedly

I like scary movies without crazy amounts of gore or zombies. Any suggestions?

That isn't to say that I can't handle the gore because I'm a wuss- believe me, blood is something I can handle (and do, frequently, whilst volunteering at Red Cross blood drives). It's just that it doesn't scare me. I want to be truly freaked out by a movie: a good psychological thriller. Movies like "Saw" and "Hostel" just don't do it for me, and the "Evil Dead" series sends me into fits of giggles. My history in acting, stage makeup, and stage combat just make me unable to believe horror films enough to make them scary.

It's not really contributing to the discussion, but I thought I'd ask anyways. I know good things come out overseas and never get a huge debut in America, so there are probably a few good movies I'm missing out on.
