While increased application of such weird and wacky designs would be awesome considering that weapon types in games have pretty much been fast shooty SMG, superpowered slow firing sniper rifle, medium range assault rifle, I mainly just want Sci-Fi guns that seem like actual guns, that don't look like they're entirely made out of cheap plastic, that sound like lethal weapons, that actually seem like the soldiers using them wouldn't laugh their asses off upon being issued with them. A Sci-Fi weapon doesn't always have to be all shiny and goofy and crap, and for me at least it can make the entire setting feel kind of stupid if its meant to be plausible, mature and grim and has stuff like that all over the place.

Killzone is probably the best example of guns I can think of which both feel slightly futuristic while still feeling like guns, however this is probably because 90% of them are 'inspired by' (ie, ripped off) real world designs.
How about the ubiquitous, at least in 40k, lasgun:

Or, if you fancy something different:

Eldar make all the best guns.
They're nothing if not creative. Who else would create a gun that teleports parts of your body out of you?

How about a gun that fires a shard of glass that rapidly expands when it enters a body?

I would mention Warhammers Bolter weapons, but a fully automatic weapon that fires rocket propelled slugs the size of fists that explode on impact might be overpowered.

I always thought a nanotech dart gun would be cool. Each dart (which disintegrates after use) is loaded with specifically tailored nano machines that can be used for purposes beyond killing. Some nanomachines can be programmed to cause temporary paralyses, others can be used to affect a targets perceptions (seeing things not actually there, hearing sounds not being made etc) or maybe even used to hijack another persons autonomous functions (simulate a heart attack or panic attack).

On top that, the more prevalent Technology is (Bionics, Robots, cybernetic interfaces etc.) the more effective this weapon is... but even on a more primitive level, it can still be used to stun or outright kill.

EDIT: Limitations of course, would be range (darts aren't particularly accurate at mid to long ranges) and a necessity to stock different types of darts (robots and other hardened targets would need something other then a hair thin needle for transfusion of the nanomachines). The Nanomachines themselves would also need to be stocked in different varieties for their multitude of required functions. Programming of the little blighters would need to be done personally and on the fly as it would be impractical to pre-program for every foreseeable occurrence.

How has that weapon never been seen again?

So a new gun...
Err...
(I'm apparently very uncreative when it comes to weaponry)
Yeah, I've got nothing. I thought of something I was going to call The Hound, which sends a projectile that tracks your "scent" (or heat...or whatever) and attacks you. But I'm 99.999% I only thought of that because the cerebral bore kind of tracks its targets.
By and far the greatest weapon in the history of all gamedom. About 15 years since I last got to use it, and it still resonates in my memory. There´s just something about liquifying your enemies brains out of his still living head that is just so....satisfying.

Gun is just a gun, it doesn't have to look nice or anything special. All it needs to do is wjhat it is ment to do, Bazookas to penetrate armor of tanks(and NOT be goddamn oversized grenade launchers), rifles to shoot men etc.

Everything else for a gun, that does not improve it's eficiency in intentd use (you do not need a silencer for shotgun) is useles.

Since we are on the subject of Turok weapons, how about the "The Inflator" from Rage Wars. A gun that makes your opponent more and more fat until they explode.

How about a gun that fires electric buzzsaws that detonate on contact?

Or is that too close to Shurikens n' Lightning?

If you are bored with SciFi guns being just conventional weapons that use lasers instead of bullets, you are playing the wrong SciFi shooters.

Try one of those for properly SciFi-ish weapons:
Shadows of the Empire
War for Cybertron
TRON 2.0 (for extremely unusual weapons)
Unreal ( and Unreal Tournament)
Red Faction
Battlezone (the remake) and Battlezone 2

What would be interesting is taking some of the newer stuff we're doing and applying it to older proven designs.

One of my friends made a 9mm revolver in Google Sketchup that used the idea of bulletstorm. 3 bullets per chamber in the revolver, basically a pistol w/ 3 round burst capability for breaking through body armor.

I fiddled around in the same program with trying to apply the idea of anti-armor sabot rounds to an infantry-carried rifle, to break through say, advanced infantry armor.

I fiddled around with the idea of a coilgun carbine for awhile...

Haven't made anything recently. Stopped playing the nation-RP I was making these for.

I had an idea for a weaponized CRT. Take an old fashioned TV set, bust out the front, add a few megajoules and get a particle laser with automatic targeting simply by using electromagnets to assist aiming.

Personally, I prefer plain ol' guns. Bullets are cooler than lasers.

I've actually been working on ideas for weapons with both modern and sci-fi variants, so I'll list Sci-fi.

Some are partially based on WH40k

All of the names are WIP.

1. The Fleshrender - design to launch the spearhead up to 50 feet, which will open up inside the enemy and release monofilament wire within them. The monofilament wire will then flail around and instantly tear the enemy apart from the inside before retreating back into the spearhead and the spearhead will retreat back into the spear. Both ends can be fired off.

2. Shrieker grenade - upon landing, will crawl around and latch onto an enemy or can be remote controlled. Once it has latched on to an enemy, it injects a virus witch causes their organs to painfully fail and violently explode, spreading the virus around.

3. Shellcracker- 2 stage rocket launcher; on impact, it melts though the armor of any vehicle straight to the engine and combines with the engine to amplify it's explosion which is over 5m even without an engine.

I'll add more when I think of them.

A gun that makes the opponent really fat then they'll become a bigger slower target and probably pop out of their armor.

I got a couple.
They should bring back the shark gun from Armed and Dangerous.
A nausea gun that makes you vomit uncontrollably. Good for groups because once one guy goes the others who see will go too and then they'll all be slipping and falling in it allowing to kill them at your leisure or just sneak in stealth style.
Oh, and a gun that makes their head vibrate and explode like in that old movie Scanners.

A gun that launches a spray of murderous nano machines that melt enemies down into goo. You can then vacuum up this goo and shoot it as ammo.

A shotgun that fires a horizontal spray of saw blades.

A sniper rifle that fires a projectile through walls that explodes as it passes through objects.

A crossbow that fires sharpened telephone poles and doubles as a flamethrower.

An assault rifle that fires homing bullets.

A freeze ray.

A gun that causes enemies to explode, and if anyone is near by, make them explode too.

That would probably seem cool to me if I had not once read a certain EternalNothingness thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.340123-Poll-Sonic-the-Hedgehogs-friends-or-the-humans-from-the-Transformers-films-Whos-worse?page=1]...

A BFG that creates miniature stars that float toward the target and supernova. That's all I got.
