The Scottish Chief Minister is trying, again, the have independence from Britain. But is trying to push it through without a public vote.

Alex Salmons dream is that the independence will make people take Scotland more seriously and to treat is as a different place from Britain...Yet he will keep the pound, you don;t need a passport to go their, the British army can still be stationed there and the Queen can freely live their. What's the point then?

Who else thinks that it is a pointless idea?

I hate the idea of us becoming independant. It will never happen though...hopefully. I'm proud to be British and if he is pushing it through without public vote i'm sure alot of Scots will happily disagree with some protests or riots y'know.

I'm not even remotely related to the situation... so my opinion is next to worthless.

But does it really matter that much? I mean, what happens when you get independence? You have to set up your own bloody government and run things your bloody self. And for what? What exactly do you gain from being a country?

In this world? Nothing.

Why can't you just live and be happy doing whatever it is you do now.

It's more a symbolic gesture of "national solidarity and prestige" than anything else. It's a publicity stunt so Alex Salmond can stay in power

Pointless no, we won the Scottish independence wars it is our right as a country to abdicate from the union if we wish; it is the worst time to do so however we are already suffering the recessions effects. And I heavily disagree with Mr. Alex methods the only reason Scotland joined Britain was due to a corrupt government going against the peoples wishes in the first place now he is proposing the exact same thing if we leave it should be the peoples decision not on one man?s shoulders.

I think the present position of Scotland is good enough.

I'm not entirely sure if Scotland could sustain itself on its own economy if it went truly independent.

Although I consider myself Scottish first and British second, I see absolutly no reason for a split from the rest of the country. There's just no need; Britain wouldn't be Britain with half of it sliced off the top. We are a UNITED Kingdom. Let's hope Salmond remembers that.

Do we really want a bunch of scots rioting?

The world may explode under the force of the riot. :3

I support it, but only if there is a public vote, from which there doesn't apear to be.

If Scotland tried to force independance, I wonder how well they would fare if the British armed forces decided to force them into staying in the union. Since so much of the army is stationed there, I doubt it would be a long campaign to be honest.

And those who say such an endeavour would be unrealistic after the Scottish independant wars, take a look at the American Civil War. It started because of the south attempting independance, which the north didn't like the sound of (as opposed to say, racism).
Bit of trivia for you there, and not the least bit on-topic!

To be more on topic though (and thus much less serious) after having Gordon Brown as a Scottish PM, I think Britain are giving this their full support.
I kid of course, Scottland kicks ass. I'd go there for University (since it's free) but they use a different legal system and thus legal education than us! Damn.

I support it only if they don't half-ass it though and go for full indpendence and if there was a public vote.

So according to the title, Scotland's Chief Minister is pushing for IndepenDANCE?

Oh how awkward >_>

On the actual subject: Doing this without a Public Vote seems like a very risky decision, one which I disagree with

A lot of my family are very pro SNP, so i'm sure they will back independence all the way. Personally I don't give a rats ass. I left Scotland and the rest of Britain behind 6 years ago and have never looked back.

The current proposal is a bit pointless, yeah. It just seems like a whole lot of hassle for nothing, like OP said, there won't be any drastic changes to anything, apart from getting our own entry to Eurovision and a seat in the EU, which I'm not particularly fussed about.

I personally don't want to, I'm proud of being Scottish but like being british all the same. The only thing that does rile me is Britain being referred to as England but I can't really do anything about that.

I don't think we can afford to anyway, Lovely Mrs Thatcher took most of our oil, which would be the main source of income, back in the '80s.

The SNP seem like a bunch of whiny tools to me, first it's Bawwing about not getting enough money from West Minster, Then it's wanting to not have anything to do with them.

Quick questions to any Escapists still reading;

1) What would happen to Gordon Brown if Scotland became Independent and he's still PM? (I think he's the MP for Fife yes?)
2)What would happen to the TV license, would scotland still have to pay?

sorry for this stupidly long post, i'll stop typing... NOW

I hope the UK never splits up, it works well as a Union. I'm also against any form of devolution for any of the constituent parts of Britain.

I'm English and I think if the Scottish want to be independent let them, but we are a UNITED Kingdom, we share the same island (Britain) and really our cultures are similar and we have stuck together through many wars, so why suddenly seperate?

Being non-British make my opinion matter very little, put you posted it in the forum so it's ok for me to speak.

I say if something is going to change make it a public vote issue. That way the Scots will decide what country they want to live in themselfs.
It would be a horrible idea for the government to decide on this on their own, not that I think that would happed in any functioning country.

If he tried to push independence without a public vote I'm sure Alex Salmon will hear Challenger II tanks rolling over the border. And then the end result would be the Scottish assembley being abolished and Salmon would get a slap round the wrists.

It is 200 years too late, these are the times for the EU and other such organisations.

And to give my opinion on PyramidHead's questions:
1) He wouldn't allow it, he isn't a stupid man (most of the time)
2) I think BBC would not be shown in Scotland until they paid for it as a government. After all, the B in BBC stands for British

Hah, take your bloody independence, lets see how your economy survives without the rest of us. Its like the UK trying to pull out of Europe, sure, we'd all love to, but the economy wouldn't survive without the free trade the EU provides.

But yeah, go for it Scotland, we'll just be sat here waiting when you want to come back to the United Kingdom.
