No way. Scott Pilgrim will never be what Watchmen was and still is. However the Scott Pilgrim movie was much better then the Watchmen one.
This

And what's weird is that the movie was remarkably similar to the comic-book (Except the ending, but the point was the same.), even down to copying scenes from the comic, and it was still a weak movie imo.

Well, his logic isn't very sensible...

...but nor was hitting him...

...and it's endear.

This is a friend that I have gotten into fights with before, its not the first time I've hit him, not the first time he's hit me and it won't be the last.
it really doesn't affect our friendship.

and thank you for correcting my spelling error, I'm one of the few that doesn't get offend at criticism. (also I have a bad habit of not proofreading)
Well, if you don't mind criticism, you should also know of the other mistakes in your post.

It's planned, not planed.

It's fits here, but just it doesn't.

Than goes there, not then.

This is more of a literary stylistical choice, but that but right after "even though I didn't hate them" just sounds wrong.

The the before Scott Pilgrim's does not go there.

An was would be good before the "aware".

And again, lose the the. It's not "aware of the video games", it's "aware of videogames".

Now, after finishing this joke over how much you love criticism, I'll answer your question.
Is the Scott Pilgrim series destined to be one of the greatest graphic novels of all time? No.
Do I think they're as good as some people make them out to be? No.
Is it equal to Watchmen? Fuck no.

And yeah, I do think it's kind of overrated, even though I really liked the movie.

If we can't have comics with depth and complexity these days, we'll apparently take "hipness". :/

Yeah...I really don't understand the hype surrounding the comics. I like the art...but the writing isn't so strong. How the hell could you even compare Watchmen and Scott Pilgrim? That's like comparing Bread and a Humpback Whale. Two completely different things.

The Scott Pilgrim movie, on the other hand, I loved. I might've liked it more than Inception. Oh yeah, I went there.
Wait, you like the art, but not the writing?

The art's serviceable, and certainly improves as the series goes on. O'Malley's dialogue and characters are what really carry the story. They speak naturally and minor characters seem to have lives - and friends - of their own. The story itself is well structured. Each arc seems to have its own theme: in Infinite Sadness, it was willpower - Envy's will to "reinvent herself," Scott's lack of willful self-definition, Todd who appears to be a being of pure willpower but turns out to be a slave to his indulgences. There's more to the story than "Scott loves Ramona for some reason; Scott has to fight a bunch of dudes."

And, hey, maybe you're just missing out on all the Toronto references. As a Toronto-raised, video game loving, recently turned vegan, I found a lot to enjoy in the comic.

Look at it this way: it didn't get all those Eisner nominations for nothing.
I completely agree. The writing is the soul of the comics. The art's decent. It's very good at showing emotions but falls incredibly flat at anything else (like the fight scenes). I've only read the first 3 comics though, the art seems to get a little more computer generated as the books go on.

I can understand the appeal of Scott Pilgrim: It has character. It seems like some solitary guy just wrote what he wanted and he was pretty good at writing dialogue, so the book is pretty funny. Good for him.

Personally I rank Watchmen much higher in terms of quality, but I get why you'd mention these two in the same sentence. Not because of quality, more because of impact.

A few days ago I was talking comics with a good friend and he mentioned how he had recently seen Scott Pilgrim. I told him that I planed to wait for the DVD to which he replied with a gasp followed by the statement "You should go see it now, it based on the most important graphic novels since Watchmen, if not being more important then Watchmen." it was at this moment that I hit him....... really hard.... in the head.
I had at that point already read all 6 volumes of the book and even though I didn't hate them, but they really didn't endear themselves to me. All I got from the Scott Pilgrim's wanna be manga adventure was a stranded romantic comedy made slightly pretentious. I really don't get it, am I missing something? Is Scott Pilgrim some epic piece of graphic storytelling destined to be one of the greatest graphic novels ever. or was it an overrated hipster love story that only caught on because it aware of the Video games?
no need to punch him but scott pilgrim is nothing like watchmen (except they both had there endings changed) but it is a great movie (haven't read the novel and also just call them comics) and it needs all the support it can get or else we will get another twenty expendables(though I can understand if some people don't like it because it isn't a movie for everyone one of the reasons why I think it will become a cult classics). btw I have more brackets then writing.

He was obviously exaggerating.

Maybe he was talking about how both novels were important, since both generated fresh innovating movies.

I thought Watchmen did better than Scott Pilgrim, no?
I think Scott Pilgrim = The Spirit in terms of movie success.

Strangely I agree. I know that Watchmen is an important graphic novel that changed the way people view the medium of comics. I love it and it got me back into American comics after a long time only reading Manga.

I FUCKING LOVED Kick-Ass it was just so much fun to read, it had almost everything I look for in this kind of story and I felt that in a strange way it kind of went well with Watchmen.

now Scott Pilgrim on the other hand I liked, it was funny and I loved all the Video Game references but it wouldn't even come close to cracking my top 10 favorite Graphic novels.

I didn't like Watchmen. I would punch most Watchmen fans in the face willingly.
You have to understand that people have these magical things called "opinions," and in this case, yours is so very very very wrong.

I really like them both, but when it comes down to it, he is wrong. The Watchmen took the whole comic media into a different direction entirely. Scott Pilgrim is just funny and quirky. While that it good an' all, it's not really changing the entire media...

I disagree with your friend's statement. Watchmen is significantly better than Scott Pilgrim. Same goes for the movies. I don't understand how everyone thought the Watchmen movie sucked as it was an extremely faithful interpretation. The only difference was the end in which the movie did it way better. Personally I think if it hadn't been so faithful everyone would trash it for deviating away from the comic.

It isn't very exceptional, the film is amazing, but the watchmen was miles more influential

It was at this moment that, had that been me, I would never have spoken to you again. Seriously, punching someone "really hard" in the head over a different opinion? Some friend you are.

OT: Personally, Scott Pilgrim > Watchmen. I hated Watchmen. It just bored me to death... Scott Pilgrim though, is one of my favorite comic series, and the movie is my movie of the year, narrowly edging out Toy Story 3.

Its got a fun story, written really well with a lot of likable characters. It perfectly balances romantic comedy with action, while throwing in plenty of well-placed video game references.

But in the long run, no, it isn't a groundbreaking piece of art that will be remembered in hundreds upon hundreds of years as "The Greatest Story Ever Told". But neither will Watchmen.

No, Scott Pilgrim is not some influential important graphic novel. But neither is Watchmen. They're just comic books.
