I would like to know how people feel about screaming in songs. Do you like it or would it make you dislike the song instantly. Personally, I used to be in the latter a few years ago, and wouldnt touch a song with screaming in it,but my friends and I discovered many great bands that use screaming as part of their songs ie Alesana, A Day To Remember, as they use screaming and singing. Ive even gotten into The Devil Wears Prada, even thought they mostly scream. However, I still cant listen to Suicide Silence or Job For A Cowboy.

So Escapists, whats your view of screaming in music?

I do like screaming... when it's good.

I cannot stand Bring Me The Horizon... I hate that screaming with a passion, it sounds disjointed and annoying.

However I do like screaming in Escape the Fate, Scapegoat, All That Remains and many others.
And Seether has screaming I love that band.

Also random strange fact time :D Paramore - My Heart has screaming at the end :3 go on listen, I'll wait.

Doesn't that make Paramore sound better? And I'm already a Paramore fan in general.

I don't mind it all. If it's a main part of the style they're performing then it's all good for me. Now if you have groups that randomly just start screaming in the middle of songs where it makes no sense...well then your just annoying.

I prefer death vocals to be honest. I have no problem with screaming, but I don't enjoy listening to it.

The only band that I will allow to do it is Disturbed. I like the sound it adds to their music, but for anyone else, it annoys me. That's what turned me off of a lot of classic rock.

Yay someone else with good taste in screamo.

Escape the fate, disturbed (a little i guess), and a day to remember are bands i really like. I hate bring me the horizon, my friend plays it constantly and says if i knew what a "breakdown" was the music would instantly became awesome. He made a "breakdown" sound so hard to describe, like a really complex concept. Then i realised its when the music goes slow and they scream louder. This did not make me like it mroe. it just made me think he was an idiot.

It's one of the reasons I don't like metal. Yes, it's a big, fat fail of a generalisation, but any song with screaming in it not only gives me a headache, but makes me feel the artist is being really loud as a substitute for getting the song's message across through lyrics.
Maybe the lyrics put the point across as well, but I can't tell because they're being screeched at me.

Yeah, high pitched screaming isn't really my cup of tea, I tend to like the lower ones (but not death metal low)
I suppose Jesse David Leach when he was in Killswitch Engage is a good example of screaming done well.

Edit: If screaming means just general metal vocal styles, then yes, I like it. It has to sound angry though, and not just toneless growling for the sake of it.

I personally don't listen to songs with extensive screaming, but i don't mind it being in some passages, the classic rock n' roll scream from 70s bands are pretty cool and i have even grown to like corey taylor's projects (some slipknot, most of stone sour) because of his mixture of singing and screaming

As long as the vocalist shows a display of passion/emotion, I don't care what technique he uses. I prefer cleaner vocals, with screams used when a point really needs to be driven in.

I don't get why people call music with screaming not music. Some of the most melodic and beautiful music I've ever heard has non-clean vocals somewhere in the song.

Personally, 4 of my top 5 favourite bands uses screaming, one exclusively. So it's pretty obvious what I dig. Like Furburt, I do prefer growling. Really high-pitched screaming doesn't do it for me (one of the many reasons I hate most metalcore) but I can stand some of it.

I would agree with you on most of Bring Me The Horizons stuff, but Suicide Season Cut-Up is an amazing album.

Few bands can pull it off. Avenged Sevenfold and Underoath come to mind as bands who rock the scream pretty good. However, unlike them most bands suck at it

I don't mind it, but I don't crave it. I've always preferred clean singing myself, or a low guttural growl. High pitched screaming requires a certain type of voice not to be annoying.

Now this, this is annoying.

Thanks OH SO Much for reminding me of that crap.

Yeah, Disturbed do use it to thier advantage. I like quite a few of As I Lay Dying's screaming too. They get away with it, most of the time.

This was my idea for a while, but I've come to enjoy songs with screaming in them when I'm able to understand what they're saying, or if the screaming keeps with the general feel and flow of the song.

If they're screaming for the sake of screaming, just because that's their band's 'sound', I will find another band to listen to.

One thing I found, Job for a cowboy was awesome live, but then I listened to some cds, and they took a while to really grow on me. Also it helps to look up the lyrics, the songs make more sense that way.
