Screaming In Music

I think it makes for better back-up than as the primary vocals, but I don't mind it at all.

Ive even gotten into The Devil Wears Prada, even thought they mostly scream.

I remember listening to "Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over" for the first time when I was just getting into screaming music - my favourite thing about it was how the two or three lines of clean vocals near the end was like some sort of oasis in the sea of screams.

I still love them, their cover of "Still Fly" is one of my favourite songs.

I like it, if it's done well. If its done poorly (Bring Me The Horizon), it can make an otherwise good song unlistenable. I generally don't care whether the singer uses clean vocals or screams/death growls/ ect., as long as it sounds good.

Depends on the vocalist. Some can do it great, and others.. Not so much.

Exactly, I've been to a show where the screamer was so bad at it that he kept causing himself to vomit trying to scream. They said that that show was the band's last, I'm pretty sure I know why they were breaking up.

Cant stand it, if the vocalist's arent singing or saying anything they should just shut it and let the band play until they come up again.

Totally agree with you that Job for a Cowboy is bollocks (that's not so much screaming as it is pig squealing, and it sounds awful), but I love me some screaming. Whether it's James Hetfield shouting 'Die by my hand, I creep across the land', Tom Araya yelling 'God hates us all', or Glen Benton screaming 'Impale the body, scars of his flesh, hung up to die on the crucifixion', I love it.

I can easily ignore shitty lyrics (though not shitty guitar playing or sloppy drumming) if a song sounds good. I won't rave about how good the song is (I still acknowledge that sounding good isn't enough to make an amazing song - the lyrics need to be intelligent), I'll still enjoy the hell out of it.

I couldn't stand it until i was listening to one of my favorite bands, the Megas, collaboration album with Entertainment System, and the thing to get about The Megas is they take the level music from the original Mega Man series and add lyrics, basing the song about the character/boss who owned the level.

Anyway, for the MegaTainment album they did the Wily's Castle theme about how Dr. Wily activated and reprogrammed the robots to help and is admonishing Dr. Light for sending Mega Man to fight for him. The point being, to show Dr. Wily's brief flashes of insanity, they use screaming, which i thought was a cool idea.


just for clarification, this IS screaming, correct? Start at about 50 seconds in for the first example.

Actually, I like it if it's done right. I don't know most of the bands listed here, but for me a good screaming can really add to the energy and tension of a song. And it has to match with the theme of the lyrics, I don't think you can "sing" about the things that really piss you off with your sunday church school voice.

Great screamers (as far as I would call them) are for example Mille Petrozza (Kreator), Peter Tätgren (Hypocrisy, Pain), Tom Angelripper (Sodom), Chrigel Glanzmann (Eluveitie)... each of them fits his band perfect.

Just my opinion.

I hate Screamer music. But I love Nirvana, and Kurt does scream, but he usually sings. He uses screaming as a sort of little thingy he adds into the song to heighten the tension of the song.

I used to hate it as well, but I started to get used to it the more I heard it. I listened to Lamb of God, or All That Remains and Killswitch Engage, and I gradually moved to the heavier stuff like As Blood Runs Black or Black Dahlia Murder. It all really proved to be an acquired taste.
Now I actually prefer bands and songs that have some type of screaming in it. I feel it just makes the song so much more intense and enjoyable.

Ever heard Red Jumpsuit Apparatus?

They do it right in their cleaner versions. The screams heighten the emotion, but comprise maybe 5% of the song.

into eternity has some screaming but they are amazing it sounds amazing.

I'm a death/grind and black metal fan. I fucking love 'em. That is not to say I don't like clean singing, just apply harsh and clean vocals where appropriate, really.

Also worthy of note is that the screaming you hear in death metal is just about impossible to do with an untrained voice. You'd blow it out very quickly.

Incidentally, I also practice death vocals myself, sadly I have yet to find a band, haha XD
