Depends on the music. More aggressive music can use screamed vocals, as long as one can discern the lyrics.
However, stuff like this...

Pisses me off. This is just screaming for the sake of screaming. Nothing is achieved by this. It does not accent the music (technically, it does, it makes it more annoying).

a prime example of beautiful clean and screaming vocals.
Yes! Good job that man. Just Barely Breathing is an excellent example too. You might want to check out some of Jesse Leach's later stuff in The Empire Shall Fall (teehee avatar).
He's a good example of a vocalist that can balance good screaming and growling with cleaner vocals well, and I think that is key in this sort of debate. There are a lot vocalists (not bands) that just yell and yell and yell as an aesthetic and as a result it ends up having more in common with noise rather than a different way to perform.

Deftones are another good example of a band that gets the balance right. They're also less growly and more screamy.

Depends if the screaming is good or not, basically. I'm more of a growling fan anyway, but even then, only if it's done well.

I prefer clean singing over the other two MUCH more, which is probably why I like the singer from Periphery more than others. I understand growling and screaming has their place though, and I'll still listen to bands that use them exclusively.

If you're that poor of a musician that you resort to screaming instead of using any sort of true vocal talent, you shouldn't be making music.
don't mean to flame but you are the sort of half witted ass hat that truly irritates me! it is rather difficult to do screaming vocals well in music and just because you don't find it to your taste doesn't immediately make it any less of a skill.

most of the truly talented bands utilize it in at least a handful of their songs and execute it beautifully; not that you'd be conviced otherwise by the inane ranting of a fellow interweb user.

good day to you sir!
Screaming is not difficult. Unless you're talking about screams like in "Ballroom Blitz", which I don't get the feeling you are.

Pretending to be a dinosaur when you make music and do a T-rex roar into the microphone is not talent, it's not skillful. Considering the thread's about opinions and the fact that we're talking about this in a forum--a place based around the premise of sharing opinions, I think simply not liking screaming is a valid argument.

Do I like having my ear-drums assaulted by somebody trying to re-enact Jurassic Park with his band? Not at all. I don't think it takes much skill, I think it's unnecessary and a product of generations of people who seemed to be pissed off about -something-, never mind that they don't really have anything to be pissed off about. Let's just roar like Tasmanian devils into the microphone to show how awesome our growling skills are; how well we can make some of man's most basic vocal noises.

Perhaps you can understand their barbaric grunting though. Maybe you can understand their Howler Monkey screeching and their pterodactyl guttural growls. Perhaps you, by some chance, find it "beautiful" to hear somebody scream as if they're being impaled by Vlad Dracula and gargling with a mouth full of razor blades while rolling around in a blanket made of Acacia branches. But I don't.

I would like to know how people feel about screaming in songs. Do you like it or would it make you dislike the song instantly. Personally, I used to be in the latter a few years ago, and wouldnt touch a song with screaming in it,but my friends and I discovered many great bands that use screaming as part of their songs ie Alesana, A Day To Remember, as they use screaming and singing. Ive even gotten into The Devil Wears Prada, even thought they mostly scream. However, I still cant listen to Suicide Silence or Job For A Cowboy.
I think you would like Attack Attack. They suck too.

How can't you listen to Suicide Silence? They're actually good.

Here's a list you could use: Lamb of God, In Flames, Devil Driver. Just for starters.

To all you who think metal is screamo, you're retarded. Metal is good for one. Second, screamo is a bunch of bitchy kids crying, throwing an offhand scream in the mix so their fans think they're "hardcore."
To hell with Attack Attack and their stupid crab stance.
But ill agree with you on Lamb Of God and In Flames. Awesome bands. I just dont like suicide silence personally. I do like Afterlife tho for some odd reason

I absolutely hate it. Yelling loudly into a microphone is not a substitution for legitimate musical talent.
Listen to Opeth then come back and say this again.

a prime example of beautiful clean and screaming vocals. I'm not going to post whole videos, just a few links to bands i think can showcase best why i personally prefer "screaming" to lame ass clean vocals, while i'm sure nobody cares, give em a listen, and simply enjoy.

amon amarth is a band that has absolutely no shortage of power behind their lyrics and vocals, achieving an atmosphere that simply cannot be built on clean vocals.

But then again, there are things like this out there, and i think it's important to point out, that the two bands above both have MELODY to their screaming, what you're about to hear, most certainly does not, and this is not the kind of metal that i prefer.

on a side note, i believe that most modern bands, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFDCHdKbKBY&feature=related

don't do anything well, and they offend my sensibilities with their existence. Is this really what people listen to? Seriously?

Then there's this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWggPLXeOkU&feature=related a band with modern pretentious sensibilities imitating bands that were great, but clearly not understanding the things that made them that way. This is garbage, you say you don't hear a difference, but the real metalhead does. I mean, for god's sake, they covered slipknot, really???? Of anything they chose fucking slipknot... good god, what is music coming to? Even the mighty metal is showing cracks in it's armor.

Im glad to meet someone who appreciates Killswitch Engage. I dont like Amon Amarth tho, Just personally.

Ok, ill post some other bands that fit my example here

- Killswitch Engage
- All That Remains
- As I Lay Dying

Clutch is the only band that I like that screams (well it's more like very loud singing) but other than that I steer well clear of it. I just hate it to be quite frank.

I am a man who enjoys his lyrics, screams aren't lyrics, scream don't have symbolism, a scream can't be sung over and over again in the shower, just personal preference, whatever music you like, whether it's Justin Bieber or Brokencyde, I just don't enjoy It.

Depends on the song.

That's the best balance of singing and screaming I've ever seen. But bands like Attack Attack really don't make sense because they're really not that heavy, but it sounds like they're trying to be. If you want to make electro metal and scream, at least make both the metal and electro parts heavy like Enter Shikari does.

I don't expect you to like screaming, because if you don't, that's your preference. But to refute your point:

Mike Patton.

Ever play Left 4 Dead or watch I Am Legend? He does monster sounds for both of those, and does vocals for like 10 billion different other things. He's always an amazing singer as well.

I don't like Enter Shikari, they annoy me. I just classify Attack Attack as a screamo/electro band.

I like it Bullet for my Valentine and Manson, but they do it particularly well and Bullet has amazing lyrics to go with it
