Argh... I'm so pissed off and I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else....

I pre-ordered Dragon Age:Origins Collector's Edition to get that armor that you can use in both it and Mass Effect 2. I put down a $20 deposit on it.

Last week they called me to tell me it was in. I told them that I wouldn't be in to pick it up until next week. They said fine.

I show up yesterday to pick it up, and they FUCKING SOLD IT ON ME. Told me they have a policy that states they only have to hold it for 48 hours, something that they COULD HAVE TOLD ME OVER THE FUCKING PHONE. Argh. I told them they were assholes and demanded by $20 back. I'll never buy something from them again.
Pretty sure they tell you that when you reserve it. Also its a policy no matter where you reserve it. It's up to you to grab it when it comes out and they aren't held reliable after 48 hours if your copy gets sold.

You really just have to enter a EBGames/Gamestop, or really any video game location, with the mindset that the people there are usually just part-timers that probably can't afford much of a gamer's lifestyle. If you can't afford games, you generally don't research them or keep up-to-date with what's going on in the gaming world. And if you are a part-timer, you care as much about your job as much as you are getting paid: very little.

So when I went pick up Brutal Legend and Boy and His Blog a month ago, the little punk kid working the register wasn't going to think to grab my preorder bonuses. Probably didn't know they existed until I told him to give my bonus stuff. Of course it helps that I was a part-timer at a Gamestop, and I know I didn't know what the fuck was going on unless it was for Halo3 or CoD4 because my boss was all excited for them.

Sometimes it helps to find a location where the staff are more knowledgable about the gaming market and their own jobs. You can even build a repore with those people and use it to your advantage. I managed to grab a Wii during its rarity because I had some insider help from an employee about someone going to cancel their reserve on it. Took a few days, but they called me up and held it for me to go get it once the woman finally cancelled.

Why it is typically unethical business behaviour, its is their business behaviour, i've had the luxury of having a forewarning in such a similiar circumstance so i was able to escape dissappointment.

Here's the thing about Gamestop/EB. It's not a "store", in the traditional sense. Their business model more closely resembles a pawn shop. I've had to go in there in the past to get something semi-close to release, only to be told that I should've pre-ordered. I might be able to accept this for oddball titles, but for something like LBP, there's no reason not to stock a whole bunch.

Anyway, I went across the street to Best Buy and bought one off the giant stack of them that they had right there, for anyone to buy. Which is how a store works.

This is a lesson I re-learn every few years. I keep going back, hoping it's gotten better, and it never seems to. If it's not, "You didn't pre-order," it's, "Are you sure you don't want to buy this crappy used copy that's covered in scratches and has no manual? It's five bucks cheaper!" One time they tried to sell a buddy of mine a "new" game that was clearly used, in so much as:

1) It was open.
2) It had been taken home by an employee and played.

So yeah. Fuck Gamestop. Buy things online, it's better for you. Or, if not online, buy them at a real store.

I'd have to agree with treating them like a pawn shop, they are unethical like a pawn shop, overcharge like pawn shop, and underpay like a pawn shop.

That's funny because the gameslop by me doesn't sell you a game unless you preorder it. One of the many reasons I don't shop there.

My advice: don't pre-order!
It's the biggest consumer rip off since layaway and gamestop is the only retail outlet that managed to convince its customers that it's absolutely necessary.
Just go to a real store, grab it off the shelf and purchase it.
I also agree with this, why pre-order, when places like Gamestop overcharge and run out anyway.

I comtemplated pre-ordering MW2, due to its popularity, 1 day after release i rang around to find most EB's sold out and i should have pre ordered, i also tried a couple of other outlets and find copies for sale with a price tag 40 (AUD) cheaper, actually every source other than EB was 30 to 40 (AUD) cheaper.

The only reason you should shop at EB/Gamestop (providing gamestop have the same returns policy) is to purchase a new game and then return it to get your money back, a week later, like a free rental.

I don't know about other countries, but in the US Gamestop charges the same as everyone else, except for Wal-Mart that calls 5 cents less a deal. I've also found them to be more organized and better stocked than larger retail stores like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target. Granted Best Buy has some nice deals, giving out gift cards on some games or 3-for-2 deals, but you have to fight them about it I've been told. Had a friend get told there wasn't a 3-for-2 deal and had to show them their own print ad, and they still tried to cheat him.

For new releases it is pretty much the same in Canada. But when a game sits on Wal-Mart's shelves for a while you might get a better deal from them than EB. On more than one occasion I have picked up an older new game from Wal-Mart that was cheaper than EB's used copy.

That's fucked up. You should sue them. I'm pretty sure you could get a free copy of the game with all the special stuff pre-ordering it gets you, a re-fund of your $20, and something for pain and suffering, if you get a good lawyer.

As to the question, no, I've never had a pre-ordered game get sold out from under me. I only ever pre-ordered one, Pokemon Yellow from Wal-Mart when I was like... ten or something. God, was it really that long ago?

If you can shop at GameStop and get a free cake but the cake is filled with rat poison do the perks still outweigh the faults?

Sure all you need to do is make the judge not see that nasty little "*while supplies last" for the preorder stuff and then use your Jedi mind trick once again to make him not see the "NEW RELEASE PRODUCTS WILL BE HELD FOR 48 HOURS AFTER RELEASE" at the bottom of the receipt and you are good to go.

Ah, didn't know that, since again, I don't pre-order games. Sorry. Looks like my post is rendered useless.

The more "gamestop only" content they put into games, the more I shun the company. If I need to buy a game that isn't on Steam, I'll go to Best Buy.

Companies should not get blamed for bad grunts, grunts should not be blamed for bad company. Obviously, they should be aware of who they hire, but unless its a drunk or some crazed person, cant blame a whole chain for one bad guy. My gamestops have good employees and have never been like the Gamestops I hear of, and thats TWO gamestops.

But then you are shopping at Wal-Mart, and is a few bucks worth the life stolen from you while inside one of them?

Yeah the one here gets as many copies as they get pre-orders.

Basically it creates a false supply and demand situation. Sort of like Oil companies acting like they are out of Oil and cranking up prices.

If you lived in my area you would see that shopping at Wal Mart is a treat. The only other store like that is Zellers and the place looks like it hasn't seen a janitor in the past decade (not to mention that they only ever have 1 cashier working).

yeah just a few days ago i heard people freaking out that they didnt pre order you know what and that it would be sold out. I got a laugh and a half out of that. we have 2 gamestops a target and a walmart all within 2 seconds from each other, and like 5 people were really worried while another guy was bragging about his pre order.
yeah other than that i like the gamestop i go to. the guys working there are pretty good. I just recently went to another one for the first time, and they sucked, they were just huge dicks.

Just like Frys Electronics. At least now they tell you its been opened and repackaged, before they didn't

OT: Just pick it up another day. You still got all the cash on the game which didn't go anywhere at all.

I have 2 Blockbusters, EB, GS, Zellers and Wal mart all within spitting distance and could not buy a copy of Borderlands 2 days after launch so selling out is a possibility on a hyped game like this.

Don't buy from Gamestop, period. Or sell to them. They rip you off either way. Just buy online or new retail from another store.

The reason GS doesn't order a bunch of copies of a hot new release is to minimize the amount of new product in the store. 100% of the used games money they get goes directly to the company, without being diverted for stupid things like royalties and paying the freaking people who made the game.

Also, it's well-known that you should never buy new games from GS for any reason. Shrink-wrapped or not, there's a good chance somebody else has already played what they are selling as "new." It might even have scratches or be dirty.
