I think a strong female supporting role would be enough.
Maybe Jade?
I think having to explain her ties to the Green Lantern mythos (the daughter of the original golden age Green Lantern) would be overly confusing to explain in the time frame of a single film.

"Screw Ryan Reynolds" yep, a lot of chicks I know want to do that.... oh wait.

Ryan Reynolds is a good actor, Canadian none the less. There is no reason to change him out for a female. Historically the green lantern is male, so all you would be doing is pissing a large amount of fans off and getting accused of selling a movie based off of sex appeal.

I think that they're making the Hal Jordan story arc. Or at least the start of it. So, that's why they picked RR.

Plus he's a good actor.

I am not opposed to a female Lantern. But I understand why they chose to start with Hal's story.
He's a good actor? :s Since when? He has the charisma of a plank of wood. And a wierd and ripped body. I for one, am NOT happy with the casting for Green Lantern. The only superhero casting I can think of that was worse is Venom in SM3. I love Eric Foreman, but as Venom he was just....wierd. Not as bad as I pictured...but wierd.

Well if they would give us a female Green Lantern then it would fuck up the whole story involving the hero that was branded in our heads when we saw the cartoons and comics(I'm reffering of course to Hal Jordon).

I've seen the extensive trailer from WonderCon of Green Lantern and was very intrigued.Ryan Reynolds seems to be the perfect fit for the job.I would of wanted him to take the Deadpool "cape" as well(since he was Subject XI in X-Men Origins)and as far as I know there will be a movie made about our funny little mercenary.

Since Buried.

Then clearly he was the perfect choice to play Hal Jordan. =P

Isn't John Stewart the most recognised cartoon Green Lantern (and most likely the most recognised Green Lantern in general before this film)?

I personally think RR is both a good actor(see Buried, for instance) and could portray a GL figure well. I could think of a lot of worse actors, who could have gotten the role, including, but not limited to Nicolas Cage, for starters. I love the guy in general, but as Ghost Rider, he just didn't really hit the spot.

Besides, let's be honest here, there will be a LOT of people who'll hate GL simply because it's not gonna be the SUPERAWESOME MOVIE they conjured up in their own little fantasies.

I would accept Nicolas Cage as any superhero just because he's such a big fan of comics. =P

Just opening his mouth during the movie would warran a million Oscars.

You know what I think?

I think Green Lantern should be a chick. And why not?
Because Hal Jordan is the essential Green Lantern character and so the first Green Lantern movie should have him in the lead role.

Guess I got to dig up Buried then. Heh.

Point taken about Hal Jordan...but...still...I'm sure Hal is more interesting than that, right? I'm not extremely into Green Lantern, but neither am I into Iron Man but RDJ made that an absolute DELIGHT to watch.

I don't actually know much about the Green Lantern franchise, here in the UK, you have to go out of your way to read about most of less popular super heros.
He is actually offered a place in the Yellow Lanterns due to the fact that he instills FEAR into people and FEAR is Yellow's power. There is a whole freaking spectrum of colors for the Lanterns that just gets insane when they all go to war.

FUCK AN ORIGIN STORY I WANT A GOD DAMN COLOR WAR NOW!

In my experience, no. Guy Gardner is where it's really at.

Well it's not like their aren't any female lanterns, pretty much every corps has some, with the exception of orange lanterns, the Indigo lanterns are lead by a woman, and the violet lanterns are only women (Which is kind of sexist. I'd like to think that buried deep inside of our Y chromosome there exist the capacity to love).
Ugh...the violet lanterns. An exclusively female group wearing almost pink "clothes", armed with the power of heart. What moron came up with that idea?

WW is an awesome hero because she's this powerful feminist figure, but instead of portraying her as awesome as she is they're gonna fuck it up and make her one of the same inane female characters that Hollywood always uses. So, before we go about changing another character, let's be sure that they can get the ones who are already around right.
Why does everyone keep saying that? She goes around in a corset, tiara and star spangled knickers, so she is basically dressed like a retarded whore, and then some writer or artist or whatever decides to give her some pants and a jacket and everyone(not Kpt._Rob in particular) is like "Oh, now she just looks like a whore." The fuck is wrong with these people? How the flan is
more dignified than
Are pants and sleeves misogynist or slutty in some way?
I guess there are kind of two ways of looking at it, yes, an outfit like the original could be viewed as nothing more than a cynical attempt to snare horny nerds into reading, but I'm relatively certain that that's not the case. I don't know if you've seen Moviebob's Big Picture episode where he explains the origins of Wonder Woman; I'm not going to go into it here, but if you haven't, watching it might help you understand, and it'll be a good supplement to what I have to say.

At the time WW was originally written, women's liberation didn't have the ground it has today, the treatment of women presented in the Christian bible was still very pervasive in society. Part of that was that women were viewed as lesser beings, their bodies were things to be ashamed of, and as such they were supposed to keep their bodies covered. Today scanty clothing on women is pretty common place, and ironically enough we often look at it inversely now, that is that the current masculine power structure takes advantage of women by forcing them to show off their bodies for male approval. But at the time WW was written, a uniform like Wonder Woman's makes a hell of a statement, it showed her as a powerful woman who was proud of who she was and wasn't going to cower to a masculine structure which forced her to hide her femininity.

I don't really know what to think of the new uniform, perhaps for our current times it would be more accurate to what a character like Wonder Woman would wear. That is to say the way in which Wonder Woman can use her uniform to symbolize her feminine strength could have changed, and so now this uniform actually is a better symbol for what she represents. But I just don't know if that's really true. The new uniform just seems like an act of caving to the newer iterations of that old call for women to "cover their shame".

Maybe it's just that it's not as iconic, you said that the second seemed more dignified, but in all honesty, does it really? Oh sure, it's more conservative and if you look at WW's uniform with no understanding of its background, then I guess it might seem less slutty (though just to reiterate, being slutty was not the original intent of the uniform), but she just looks like any girl wandering around a college campus, that is to say that the statement of the uniform is "well, now that women are equal I'll just dress like all the other girls." I don't want to get into the debate over whether or not that's accurate (though I would say it's probably not), but if Wonder Woman is to maintain the powerfully feminist tones that make her an interesting character, then she would almost definitely not agree. All that aside, the new uniform just seems like a marketing ploy to make the character, (who has, quite unfortunately, become increasingly irrelevant) a little more palatable to current society, and I'll just make my point one more time, WW is not about making women palatable to society, she's about making society deal with the fact that Women shouldn't be limited by their gender.

That could work. They'd need to have a new backstory about how she became a cripple (and thus Oracle) since the Joker's dead,
Umm.... Joker did not die in Dark Knight. The actor did well after it was made. You CAN replace an actor. It would not be "that hard".

But then I was bummed that Mark Hammill did not get to be Joker in TDK...
Actually, you're wrong there. True, he didn't die in the film, but the director said after Heath Ledger's death that in the Nolan-verse, the Joker is officially dead, just as Two-Face is. He went on record as saying that he would never dream of casting anyone to replace Ledger in the role after the performance Ledger gave. These are the words from Nolan's own lips, for the record. Normally, I'd agree that the actor can be replaced, even though after seeing The Dark Knight I don't believe anyone could match his performance. But in this case, from the director/producer himself, it just isn't going to happen.

Not screw RR, screw Hal Jordan. He's the least interesting character ever to be GL.

I thought this was a "Ryan Reynolds is a dick" thread. So disappointed.

OT, there are members of the Green Lantern corp. who are females.

Just like "Dumbledore is gay"? Even though nothing was shown to that... I mean show me the scene (Deleted or not) where Joker died in TDK. He's left hanging there. Besides, how many times has Joker died in the comics just to come back as if nothing happened?
