You do realize that there is a small, clickable, un-linkable rim just at the side of the posting fields? You could click on them instead.
Or at any rim outside and/or at the side of the linkable fields. It's what I do.

Using the mouse wheel is all well and good until there's a sub-scrolling element e.g. a text entry box or something else that comes into view, and then the majority of browsers - for some retarded reason - make you scroll all the way through THAT before you can continue down the page. The only way to force your way past it is to click outside of the subscrolly thing (which deactivates it even though you never activated it in the first place) and resume mousewheelin'.
However this sort of thing is common enough (there's usually links to other threads & stuff at the side anyway, or more subtle ads) that I've gotten more used to clicking near the middle of the screen anyway now, so it's still not an issue. Besides, I want my limited edition badge!

I have the habit of clicking on the thread content itself instead of on the side panel, thanks to other sites training me there's less chance of accidentally clicking a link by clicking the textual content than there is clicking outside of it.

I really didn't like the anthony saves the world ads, they were a major eye sore. I swear I could actually feel them giving me headaches just by being on screen. Was just plain garish and ugly.

Escapist hosts advertisements only for their own content (including The Escapist Store) anyway. Maybe a charity ad once a year, but otherwise, it's only ever the Escapist shows, merchandise, or stuff like publisher's club.mjc0961 said:

That's sort of funny and sort of sad, considering a staff member specifically mentioned the same thing by name in a post a day or two ago. It was to say that it makes them sad because it hurts their main source of income for running the site, but still... I understand wanting to discourage people from using it, but trying to pretend it doesn't exist seems a tad over-zealous (and futile, for that matter). As far as the actual topic of the thread goes, yes, they annoy the crap out of me for the same reason, and I complained about it last year at some point. I have the same habit of clicking at the side of the window to de-select things, because the vast majority of sites I use regularly have nothing there to accidentally click on, at least not invisible stuff to accidentally click on. The clickable area of the side panels seems to be the entire height of the page, not just the part where there's something actually displayed there, or at least it was back when I used to mis-click on them all the time on my desktop instead of reading the site on my laptop, which has a screen too small for them to fit in the window. Heh.
You have no idea how many 'Anthony saves the world' tabs I have closed. SO ANNOYING. HUNDREDS OF THEM.

The most frustrating thing is the popup window advertising the webby awards that appears when you try and watch videos. Makes the videos slow and laggy for me. Not good. And there is no way I know of of watching the videos without the popout thing.

To explain to all those being smug and thinking they're somehow explaining how to use the mouse wheel - the side bars are the problem precisely because I'm using the mouse wheel, as I explained.
If the text box scrolls I have to click outside the text box to scroll the main window, and moving to the side just comes naturally to me - primarily because it's a much easier, much more natural movement.
That bloody tab just keeps opening.

Well they are annoying yes but they are neccessery (sp?) to keep the site running. Could be worse. There could be video ads in front of the vid...oh wait...
