Aww man I got put on probation for mentioning the program that allows you to block ads, whose name shall not be spoken. Oh well so be it.
That's sort of funny and sort of sad, considering
a staff member specifically mentioned the same thing by name in a post a day or two ago. It was to say that it makes them sad because it hurts their main source of income for running the site, but still... I understand wanting to discourage people from using it, but trying to pretend it doesn't exist seems a tad over-zealous (and futile, for that matter). Their site, though, not mine, so they can be silly about it if they want.
As far as the actual topic of the thread goes, yes, they annoy the crap out of me for the same reason, and I complained about it last year at some point. I have the same habit of clicking at the side of the window to de-select things, because the vast majority of sites I use regularly have nothing there to accidentally click on, at least not
invisible stuff to accidentally click on. The clickable area of the side panels seems to be the entire height of the page, not just the part where there's something actually displayed there, or at least it was back when I used to mis-click on them all the time on my desktop instead of reading the site on my laptop, which has a screen too small for them to fit in the window. Heh.
