I used to work at a store that bought and sold used games and to this day I still have no idea how people could take such poor care of there game disks. I'm by no means delicate with my games but there still is barely a scratch on any of them. Every time some kid came in with a destroyed disk I almost wanted to ask them if they were using the thing as a Frisbee.

They're not bad in the uk. Whenever I buy from game or gamestation they seem to be in decent condition. I don't think they accept them if they have too many scratches n whatnot.
Funny thing is all the Ebay ones come from the UK :p

Tell me about it. I bought the original Mafia for $20 on a whim for PC at EB Games a couple of years ago. I go home and the disc doesn't work. I return it.

Two days later, I see it new at Futureshop for $10. I was so happy but at the same time pissed that EB almost ripped me off like that. Sure, it was unintentional. But if you can't check the quality, at least check the price...

Ebay is your problem right there.

Don't buy second hand from Ebay. There is no quality control. Any-one could put a game up of any condition and as long as they didn't say 'new' in the description there's nothing you can do about it. If you get it from reputable stores there should be no issue. Because it's not in their best interest to accept games in bad condition.
Indeed but I'm not currently living in the UK hence why I use Ebay :p

I've had some bad ones.

Tried picking up a copy of Okami and it had this tiny crack that was unnoticeable unless you looked for it.

Another time I tried picking up Untold Legends because it looked like diablo on psp, and the actual disk inside was scratched. How does that happen!

Uh dude, you bought a used game at mother-zarking gamestop. Why not go to a dedicated used game store and buy there? They can't possibly be that rare, I know there's a full SIX within walking distance of my house.

Also, why would anyone SELL a game used to gamestop? Gamestop doesn't even run on the basic 50-100 model! What con artists. Even with the 50-100 model, the used game store makes a criminally large amount of money for little investment.

I find UMD cases are quite fragile. I take good care of my stuff, but accidents happen and UMD's are fragile. The plastic is also very soft making them easy to scratch. At least when a UMD hits the floor the case breaks and not the disc.

That's one jiggly avatar.

People are notoriously rough with products, and expect someone to pay for their destroyed goods. This is pretty much why the "certified used" car market exists.

Or, to put it another way, if you expect barbarism from strangers, you will never be disappointed, only pleasantly surprised when it's not there.

I work at Blockbuster and it's amazing what people do to games. It's like they leave it out and just walk over it or something. Seriously, and used games too.

I think what a lot of people do it leave it so the readable side is facing the air and the non-important to play top part with the logo so you know what disc it is is on the ground, which I've never understood. I put all my games on the readable side down on something level and smooth, and usually clean, never had a disc of mine not work. You think about it, leaving that readable side up means it's exposed the air, dust, dirt, grime, and if anything runs over it accidentally it leaves a nice, fuck-this-shit-up scratch that leaves you pissed off and angry

People do NOT know how to fucking take care of discs. And it's not even the rentals, it's their own ones that they try to trade in and they look like garbage! Seriously, it's fucking amazing this people call themselves gamers when they care little to none about their games! It's not even a matter of not putting them right back in their case. Just put them somewhere level and mildly clean and you're all set, you don't need to leave the important disc up facing the dangers of this world.

People just don't take pride in the condition of their stuff anymore...it's sad

Don't get me started on cover art. I'm a stickler for it and almost refuse to buy games without the art. I can understand a guide book being taken out, but the cases? It's not like it's a ittybitty thing, they're pretty fucking big...I can't talk about this anymore...people just don't take pride and care of their things anymore, it's fucking disgusting how careless people are with not only their own things, but things that they're borrowing, from friends or a rental store...

I've been pretty lucky with my second hand purchases At least regarding discs. Never had anything arrive in a condition I didn't expect. Because I have a readily available supply of jewel cases I tend to just buy the discs, manual & sleeves or mint condition discs with damaged case and then just swap the case.

I've managed quite a few bargains on the old interwebs: Mint condition FFVII for £10. Same with 8, just a damaged case, same price. 9 I had to go 5 higher I think but snagged the first run picture discs for my efforts.

I don't do too well with cartridges though but I think it's just the nature of the hardware. With a disc there's less to potentially go wrong. Still, most of the cartridge games I wanted I got when they were new.

i do realize what you mean by all this shady stuff, and how people...my goodness people treat games like shit, there are some ridiculous thigns out there i've seen happen to games and the conditions they come back in.

but i love used games and the prices they bring in, so when i do buy online and stuff, i do tons of checks on the products/the sellers/if they are giving good enough pics/etc..

sometimes you get the shitty product, thats part of used games, but if you give that bit of extra care i tend to get amazing prices and end up saving myself a good 70 bucks or so each year from buying used stuff online rather than new

especially with the psp cases...i know EXACTLY what you mean about the games getting touched more than a fucking hooker (seriously..wtf...this makes the most illogical of sense)

9 out of 10 games I buy are used (and mostly off of eBay). I've never had one come to me in poor condition.

Sorry about your luck, though.

Aye, Sony Put a case round 90% of the UMD so you dont touch the inner Disc yet most of the games I get seem to have almost no fingerprints on the case and tones on the disc xD

Took me 15 mins to get all the fingerprints off a copy of tomb raider legends umd i got a few days ago xD
