Every time I'm talking to someone that I don't really know, and the subject gets on to games (which doesn't happen very often), they don't believe me when I say I enjoy video games a lot, and they just assume that I just play CoD or whatever. It's times like these when I wish there were a phrase you could say that instantly gives you "gaming cred", and makes the other person know you're serious.

So I could say something like "The cake is a lie!", but less well known. And not to mention annoying.

EDIT: The reason people usually don't believe me is because I'm a girl, and they think I'm just saying that to get guys.

DOUBLE EDIT: I regret using the word gamer, because hardly anyone has answered my question! Seriously guys, this isn't some ranty thread, there are heaps of others for that. I just want a secret gaming phrase or code you can say that only other... video game players will understand. So that's why I've changed this a little bit.

There is:
Don't you hate it when your playing a German minor and the BBB decides that it is going to expand to the east. I mean how the f^ck am I supposed to for the Germen Empire as Baden if France owns half of Prussia and has most of the other minors in their SoI.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I play games so this problem doesn't arise with me so much, other then mates asking how much CoD I play (Which is very little) and what is the longest period of time I have played a single game not realising that I find little point in timeing how long I play games for and I useually tend to play multiple games over a long period of time. But when I do meet other people it would be a good idea for a phrase which can get that out of the way, also something which points out that there are more fucking games then CoD, Pokemon and Minecraft But it might be that those games are popular in high-school. But I digress.
Such a phrase would probably need to be a referance or something.

I usually ask questions about what games they've played, if they've played the Baldur's Gate games and before you even bat an eye i will stab you if you say yes about the PS2 games.

Why does it matter?

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but why do you care if they know or don't know what your hobbies are? Is it important to who you are that they know how you spend your free time?

I honestly want to know. Is there a need for them to know how many and how much you play games? Personally, I don't tell people I'm a gamer because a lot of people still equate games with childrens toys and I'm already only a van away from being creepy.

Or a secret handshake perhaps, in lieu of a phrase? A phrase that would probably do it is something along the lines of "I just installed the latest catalyst/nforce drivers and noticed a marked improvement to my framerate". :)

Whenever someone says their a gamer to me I ask them what that means since the definition of the word differs between everyone.
It doesn't really differ. The only way it might is between video, pen & paper and board gamers all of whom could lay a claim to the title. But in the context of video games, "a gamer" is defined as an enthusiast who enjoys and/or takes seriously and spends time on their hobby (ie. not casual, which would specifically be a "casual gamer").

The key part really is enthusiast. A "petrolhead" is a car enthusiast and separates them from people who just like cars ;-) Someone not an enthusiast is not a gamer whether they claim to be or not.

Thank you. Good to know I'm not the only one with that definition; too many people define "gamer" by what games they play, or if they play games at all, rather than considering the level of value they place on games. Way I see it, someone who occasionally plays Call of Duty and only Call of Duty is no more a gamer than someone who occasionally plays Bejeweled and only Bejeweled; it's not about what games they play, or how often, it's about the fact that it's nothing more than a diversion. A gamer values video games on a higher level.

I guess the term "gamer" needs some defining. Non-gamers are casual gamers will have different definitions as to what a gamer is (as do "gamers" themselves). Personally, I think that the term "gamer" is vague to begin with as there are different types of them. You could be, say, a PC gamer, a general online enthusiast, someone who goes out of their way to play as many games and new releases as possible with no real objective, an achievement hunter, etc.

Take this how you want, but a "gamer" is always going to be different from, say, a movie enthusiast since gaming involves tasks and various activities. To simply state "I'm a gamer" is too broad for anyone to understand precisly what you mean, so just elaborate: "I'm this kind of gamer".

Well, people just scoff, then look impressed when they realize I'm serious and ask what my favourite games are. I then spend about an hour telling them why the Assassin's Creed series is so great.

I agree totally, the amount of people I have spoken to who claim to be `a gamer` only for me to quickly find out they know very little of video games at all is suprisingly high.

The last person who told me he was a gamer had never even heard of RPGs, adventure games or shoot em ups (possibly more I stopped listing genres) and was trying to tell me why all mario games are rubbish before I shut him up by asking if he had played a Mario game, his answer no.

Playing a few games does not make you a gamer.

I'm a gamer. Isn't a gamer someone who plays games on a regular basis?

I just checked the dictionary definition in the OED 2011.

'Gamer:
noun

a person who plays a game or games, typically a participant in a computer or role-playing game.'

Still the same as twenty years ago then. No idea why it would cause anyone confusion.

the industry naming standards work fine, casual and hardcore. I'd like to think it means

casual gamer - only plays for short periods of time, usually one platform owner. Only has interest in 1 or 2 genres.

hardcore gamer - knows about all games, for all platforms owns more than one platform, play many games from many genres, is able to complete games. - and goes on websites like this one :p

This works just fine.

Failing that, simply turning your head toward one of your shoulders and shouting, "You will not steal Boo from me! I know your tricks!"

Should be more than sufficient.

I dunno about stipulating they have to own more than one platform. I put forth this simpler classification, a casual only plays a few games without regularity, and the hardcore play a shit ton of games all the time on whatever platform and genre they feel like.

The term has too many meanings because of how easy gaming is to do now. It needs a second word just to elaborate on how much you play.
