If you want "gamer cred" (I lol'd when I read that), tell them that you play something other than CoD.

Because I'm pretty rubbish at video games, but I enjoy watching others play them. I also like to help out when I can. (Like with MGS, for example. I can watch the Map while whoever is playing can concentrate on moving around and stuff.) Or just watching health bars and warning someone when they need to heal.

People ask how I don't get bored just watching someone play a game, instead of playing it myself. But I can get just as immersed in the story as they do!

I like the fact that you use the traditionally toff word "inconceivable". You're defying all kinds of modern stereotypes. Speaking of which, I have a cousin who went to uni and then wound up being a truck driver for several years. So I guess things aren't always what they seem.

As for you Aztec, I would say that playing CoD pretty much defines you as a gamer. I mean, everyone has their own games, don't they? I know a lot of people who don't think of themselves as gamers, but they actually spend more catapulting birds on their iPhones than I do playing any AAA stuff. So there are quite some different perspectives out there on what it means to be a gamer.
I don't think there's one phrase that fits all though. Just describe the kinds of games you play and then people will get a better idea of what kind of gamer you are. You could start off with "I'm an indie gamer" or "I like playing sports games" or things like that.

When my gamer status is confronted by people i recently met i usually go for:

"The last 10 years I spent more time playing video games than I spent sleeping."

Ofc while this usually leaves people with no doubt of my gamer status, they also usually don't know how to move the conversation forward, unless they are themselves gamers in which case we invariably start discussing video games.

The term "gamer" is too broad. It's like saying "I'm a music-listener" instead of "I'm a techno freak". Need some definitions within that term.
As for me, I don't tell people I play games. Not because I'm embarrassed, but because it doesn't come up. I'm quite unsociable, so when people ask what I did on the weekend, it's always like "stayed at home" or "not much". If I skip a day off school due to games [footnote]Dragon Age and Minecraft. [/footnote] and people, the next day, ask what was wrong, I just say "stuff came up".
People usually find out I play games, but because games aren't a huge part of my life (yet), it's not something really worth discussing in depth with the people I "socialise"[footnote]By socialise, I mean listen and only talk when asked a question.[/footnote] with at school. On my Xbox, I only play CoD because I recently sold everything else to pre-order Halo Anniversary. On my PC, that's where the game money will be going. All I need is a processor, then I can start gaming for real!

I would say that I play Minecraft and Half-life. Minecraf to show that I am actually a gamer, since it's mostly unknown outside of gamer circles, and Half-Life to show that I'm play something other than CoD.

To be honest, being a gamer in these times, doesn't degrade your social esteem as much as it did several years back.
Lots of people nowadays are gamers, even those who claim to be very "casual"

I don't have this problem because I try not to associate with people that define themselves by arbitrary labels based on their hobbies.

I play games. You play games. Lots of people play games. None of us are gamers.

I don't really come out and say I'm a gamer, I usually just start chatting to people about games. A man came into work clutching Arkham Asylum and I told him it was my favourite game. We had a little chat about it, he mentioned Bioshock and Fifa at one point then he went on his merry little way.

I never come out with "I'm a gamer" if people just ask what I do/like to do I just say, "I play games" and leave it at that. I don't actually care what folk think, if they ask more and we get in to a discussion then cool, but I don't actually give a shit.

OT: Seriously though, being a gamer means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. As far as I'm concerned, being a gamer is investing a decent proportion of your time and energy into videogaming. If people don't agree with that or assume something completely different of me because of mixed meanings, then it's not really my problem.
