Jonathan Coulton, and Paul and Storm.

Great bands no one seems to like when I show them some of their songs.

"Deconstruction was DEFINITELY one of the strangest albums of the 90s. like, the true idea behind alternative. Funk rock, acoustic passages, intentionally flat vocals, Velvet Underground-meets-Butthole Surfers kinda experimentation on a few tracks, and a LOT of Pink Floyd.

like a big melting pot for creativity. "

To sum it up.

look up the band
this is not a game of who the fuck are you
im not kidding that is there band name
I know loads of people who know the Band, I know the Band, this is more an age thing, because everyone of a certain age will have heard of the band. Anyone who's seen the Last Waltz knows the band, and anyone who has even a slightly in-depth knowledge of Bob Dylan knows the Band.

(I'm being pedantic I know, but this is a lesser known bands thread, the Band are famous, just mainly to an older generation of music lovers.)

Goodnight Sunrise. They're a Helena, MT band that needs way more listeners. They're quite good. Them and it seems like You Me At Six needs more US exposure. Possibly Forever the Sickest Kids, too.

Thrice. I am the only person i know who has heard of them
No you are not.
I am in fucking love with Thrice.

Two of my favorites are The Lion And The Wolf [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkCn2r5gv58] and Artist In The Ambulance [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXoDtkliSgY].
I am vaguely aware those are probably the ones "everyone likes", but I don't much care.
They rock.
I saw Thrice open for Brand New in Novemeber. I had heard of them before that, but only in passing and had never listened to them.

They were... Decent. They didn't make me want to go buy all of their stuff, but it wasn't unenjoyable. In fact, I think I might go listen now...

I'd normally say Flogging Molly and DKM, but I feel like i've said them so many times on threads like these, there can't be anyone who hasn't heard of them by now.

So, I'll say the Nerdcore genre as a whole, and, forgive me if these guys are popular, The Gaslight Anthemn. I just found out about them a couple days ago, so i'm not quite sure on their popularity.

That is so wierd. Everyone and their moms know who Thrice is where I live. They have been one of the most popular bands around since Artist in the Ambulance/Illusion of Safety days. Do you live in the States?

For me it would be Porcupine Tree, Anekdoten, In Mourning, Riverside, and SikTh to name a few.

Colour Haze is a cool jam band
Check out their Cds Tempel and their eponymous album
Also Clutch has a sweet blues-rock sound
The Beatles, theres more there than All You Need Is Love and Yellow Submarine
and if you're an emo out there, stop listening to Eleanor Rigby YOU ARE RUINING IT
HOLY FUCK YES :D

Saw Colour Haze a few years back at the Underworld, fucking beautiful :D Clutch are massive amounts of win too. Loves me some stoner rock.

Problem with naming 'obscure' bands is that almost all have a fanbase, so if you list one and someone else the other side of the world has heard of them, suddenly they're a lot less obscure. The only truly obscure bands you know are the one your mate is in and have only played a handful of gigs. With this in mind, I present a band of a couple of mates of mine, the mighty TOOM, destroyers of all things precious and holy:

http://www.myspace.com/toomdoom

And favorite of mine that isn't massively known, though by no means an unknown entity, is Flower Travellin' Band. Gorgeous psychedelia from Japan. Check them out if that sort of thing is your bag.

I'm going to say what I said the last time a thread like this came up.

Mm

Obscure threads like this are pointless, the only discussion that comes out of them are mostly "Lol, I've heard of them for ages, they aren't obscure!" or "Zomg, I love that guy, have an internetz"

In almost every one of these threads that popped up I have either name dropped a bunch of local acts, uni bands that I've played in or just made stuff up. And nobody has questioned me.
And my point as proven in the second post of this thread.

OT: I'm really into The Kidney Thieves, Disco Nap, An Horse,Casual Karma and Pandema.

Streetlight Manifesto Need way more exposure. I don't know how big they are in the states but in NZ I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who knows em. Lol.
Totally ninja'd on this ^
Sorry man, there aren't many of us on the West Coast of the states, but after moving to the East Coast people don't give me a blank stare when I say I listen to ska, so there's hope!

Devin Townsend.

Deserves ten times the recognition he gets.
Guy makes some good music, just he scares the shit out of me.
Ah... he's not really scary.

Watch interviews with him and he's quiet, calm, intelligent and damn funny.

So, Escapists, having it simply put, what bands do you like that you feel are lesser-known in the music world? Being an avid music listener myself, I like talking about my musical tastes now and then. Many times however, I hear the response of something along the lines of "Never heard of 'em" or simply "Huh?"

Some examples of mine would be Animal Collective, Aphex Twin, Dance Gavin Dance, and Metronomy.

And please, don't go harrasing other posters by telling them "That band/genre sucks."
Aphex twin is p common in the UK, specially that track Windowlicker great tune, ANCO are great too :D
But on my iPod I've got a few artists A.A Kurtz, Remano Ezildn and Sunn o))).
