Not sure if they've already been mentioned, but Agalloch and Russian Circles seem to be pretty unknown.

Only one of my mates seems to have heard of them, but they're really good if you're into metal.

That just sounds pretentious, and for that reason. I hate you.

KMFDM are not from Germany, they just speak German in a few of their songs.
Edit: Sorry, they were founded in Germany. But, moved to the U.S. upon signing with Wax Trax.

Skindred, a raggae-metal outfit from Wales, who are electric when livee, and You And What Army, a rave-rock combo from before that music became cool.

They are all played on popular music channels in the UK so they aren't really obscure around here at least.

Symphony X... plain and simple.

Yes, they've been going a long time and have a few albums out... their most recent one (Paradise Lost) actually being advertised AND containing their first music videos... but they don't have as large a fanbase as these creampuff bands you see hogging up the charts.

Well worth a listen.

Thrice. I am the only person i know who has heard of them
Thrice! That was the first band I thought of when I saw this thread. Oh man, that is so awesome that someone else has heard of them. Such a good band.

Let's go through my iPod, shall we?

- Abney Park is pretty cool. They incorporate steampunk stylings into their music. It's neat stuff.
- Amos Lee is an amazing smooth jazz artist. I'd definitely recommend checking him out.
- Big Sugar is an awesome band, but they're moderately famous (at least in Canada), so maybe they don't apply.
- The Black Mages are an awesome metal band for anyone who enjoys video games. Specifically, Final Fantasy, as the music that they play is heavy metal versions of FF songs. So awesome.
- Butterfingers are a New Zealand rap group that are as talented as they are hilarious.
- Cage the Elephant are a new band and are awesome, though they are gaining fame. They do "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked", which is used as the theme song for Borderlands.
- Cold is a cool band (no pun intended) that do some interesting things with ambient effects.
- Danko Jones are kind of famous, but nowhere near where they should be. Such an awesome band.
- David Ford is another smooth jazz-type artist that is amazingly talented.
- Hurt is another cool band with ambient effect stuff. They have some really awesome material.
- Jamiroquai aren't as well-known as they should be, though they got some fame for being featured in Napoleon Dynamite (which I am eternally sorry for). Still, they are a super-funky band that are really fun to listen to.
- Klaatu was a band from the '70's and '80's that released some awesome stuff, though their first album, 3:47 EST, is the best.
- Liquid Tension Experiment is a side-project done by some of the guys from Dream Theater, if that means anything to anyone. They've do some really neat instrumental stuff.
- Mike Relm was the DJ who was featured on YouTube Live, if anyone saw him perform. He does some really cool stuff with mixing, and has some awesome original material.
- Minus The Bear is a band that gives me the impression of a heavier Modest Mouse, in a way. Check 'em out, they're pretty awesome.
- Nickel Creek is a great folky band that features some great instrumentalists. They have a mandolin, a violin, an acoustic guitar and a double bass, and that's it. Great music, and they do an absolutely killer cover of "Toxic" by Britney Spears. Check it out on YouTube, it's awesome.
- Prize Fighter Inferno is a side-project done by Claudio Sanchez, the lead singer for Coheed & Cambria (who are awesome in their own right). It's primarily acoustic, but there are some electronic effects, and all of it is pretty awesome.
- Ra is one of my favorite bands. They are nu-metal, and feature one of the best male vocalists ever (who actually held the record for the highest note held for the longest amount of time by a male vocalist until he was overcome by an opera singer). Their live album, Raw, is definitely the best offering they have, but all of their stuff is amazing. I highly recommend them if you are into the nu-metal scene. (The song where he hits that note is "Skorn" off of that live album. Check it out: overall, it's a great performance, including a quick injection of Ludakris.)
- Samantha Schultz is an artist based locally here (out of Edmonton, AB) who has an amazing voice. She's getting to be fairly well-known in the jazz, blues and folk circuits, but she definitely deserves more fame.
- Sarah Slean is a jazz artist who is relatively well-known, but she's really quite incredible.
- Sick Puppies are an awesome band. They have a moderate level of fame, mostly because of that "Free Hugs" video where their song "All The Same" was used. They also performed on YouTube Live, but their other stuff is definitely better than that song. Also, their bassist, Emma Anzai, is ridiculous talented and incredibly good-looking. She calls herself the "female Flea", and she's not that far-off, because she really is that good. (As a bassist, I feel confident saying that.)
- SoCalled is a Jewish artist who doesn't really fit into any genré. Don't get taken aback by the Jewish comment: all of his content is very obviously Jewish. Check out the song "You Are Never Alone" on YouTube. Great video, great song.
- Stone Sour is a side-project done by a bunch of guys from Slipknot. Heavy stuff, and I suppose they are moderately famous in the right circles, but check them out anyways. Great stuff.
- Storm Large was on the show Rockstar: Supernova, but she is actually a very well-established artist by herself, both before and after her appearance on that show. Check her out; she has great stuff.
- Ted Leo and the Pharmacists are a great band. Check out their album Shake The Sheets: awesome stuff on there.
- That Handsome Devil had a few of their songs featured in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises ("Elephant Bones" in Guitar Hero 2 and "Rob the Prez-O-Dent" in Rock Band 2), so they have a moderate level of fame, but they are a really awesome, though quirky, band that should be given more attention.
- The aforementioned Thrice is quite incredible.
- Umphrey's McGee is a great jam band. Truly, this generation's Phish or Grateful Dead. Check them out.
- 10 Years is an incredible band. They do some great stuff. A little heavier, but not too much: they have just the right mixture of melodic stuff and heavy music. I'd highly recommend them.

And that's just the stuff on my iPod at the moment.

Iced Earth, Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian and Demons & Wizards are the major ones I listen to which is very hit or miss on who's heard of it (more people I know have heard of Iced Earth than the others, only because I'm in the US and they're a US band).
I listen to all those bands. Have you heard of my even more unknown bands that I posted? (Evergrey and Echoes of Eternity)

I also listen to Epica, After Forever, Symphony X, Kamelot, Lunatica, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Rhapsody, Shadow Gallery, Lacuna Coil, etc.

I've actually met Dream Theater and own all their albums. I also have an autographed album and poster from Echoes of Eternity, they're my favourite 'new' band (their debut album was in 2007 I believe).
Can't say that I've heard of those bands. I've heard some of Dream Theater and I like it. I've also heard of Lacuna Coil and Rhapsody just haven't listened to them yet. I've seen Iced Earth in concert at a relatively small club which was awesome.
