Just make sure you get a model that's backwards compatable...In case you want to play PS2 games...Or even PSone games if you're retro
If the rumors are true all PS3s could be getting backwards compatibility through a firmware update at some point. Also, all PS3s can play PS1 games.

I say go for it, the PS3 has some great game on it. I don't think you will be disappointed. Be sure to get one of the big models, you will want that hdd space! Or just buy another hdd, but maybe not a ssd ;)
Its impossible the new PS3's had the emotion engine chip removed, so it's a hardware and a firmware issue. The slim ps3 rumours also state they may reintroduce the technology.
Not in the slightest. European PS3s never had the emotion chip, they always used software emulation. As well as certain models of US PS3 after they removed emotion chip but before they got rid of PS2 emulation entirely.

I would definitely recommend getting a PS3, but not yet. Wait for an announcement or price drop of some sort, SOMETHING is coming soon. Also, don't sell your Wii, as I expect Metroid: Other M to be the bees knees.

P.S. Thanks

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Fallout 3 yet!... I want that game so bad.... Thanks again thought ya'll for the replies. Much appreciated!...
May I say that if you do make the switch, Fallout 3 should be one of the first things you get; although, the GOTY is coming out soon and you may as well wait for that as it kind of completes the game.

Also, if you have a PS3, you may as well have Warhawk. It's just a hell of a lot of fun.

I didn't have any games for a whole week after buying my PS3. I spent days playing the tons of free demos on PSN. You can get demos for a lot of the games people are mentioning here like Killzone and Infamous but you should also check out the demos for some of the cheap games they sell off of PSN, some of them are really good: anything Pixel Junk, echocrome, the last guy, and I don't think there's a demo for noby noby boy but it's only $5-and really, you only need it if you really liked Katamari and/or you like to smoke something while deciding what to play.

Also download the demo for Valkyria Chronicles, it's not a game that's for everyone but those who do like it (like me) end up loving it.

...Well, no one else seems to care about discussing this sort of thing with me, so I'll try here.

Basically, I've had almost NO fun with my Wii after beating the few good games on it, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl has gotten boring, and really isn't quite as awesome as I hoped it'd be, and I've lost interest in the constant tedious repeating adventures of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and so on, so I may convert to a PS3.

Is this a decent move? Also, what are some good games to get to start off with for the PS3? Some personal opinions from fellow gamers on the net would be most appreciated...
That's exactly what I did.

Still don't play my PS3 much, though it earned more hours than the Wii did (bar Zelda, which is a Gamecube game anyway).

Neither console holds many games really worth drooling over, but at least with the PS3 you won't look like a complete spastic when playing (instead you'll look like a bit of a spastic), and it actually has an online service rather than the Wii's horrific "online" system.

Exclusive games to get:
MGS4 - Tiresome, but decent when you actually get to play the game instead of watching cutscenes. Fun multiplayer.
LittleBigPlanet - Great in co-op.
flOw - Very entertaining, relaxing game. Only problem is that it's free on the PC.
Warhawk - Only played it for about 25 minutes, seemed a decent game. Worth picking up if you like this kind of thing.

Games to avoid like the plague:
Resistance: Fall of Man - Generic, ugly, brown shooter with boring level after boring level. The only game that's so boring and generic, I didn't even enjoy it in co-op.
Killzone 2 - A brown Crysis. Odd AI and repetitive. Able to play through while barely conscious.
Haze - See any review of Haze.

I had a Wii for almost a year and for months straight it had nothing better to do, but collect dust and be a paper weight, a very costly paper weight I might add. I finally sold the thing and got a 360 which has been the best move in gaming I have ever made. The two reasons why I didn't get a PS3 was because of the price and because most of my friends have 360's (only one of my friends has a PS3 but he also has a 360) so I got it mainly so I could be able to play games with my friend. That would also be something to think about it, is if you enjoy playing games with your friends then you should get the system that most of your friends have, if most of friends don't have systems or you don't like playing with them then by all means GET A PS3.

I have both a Ps3 and a Wii.
Within a month of owning the PS3, I had as many games as I bought for the Wii over the 2-3 years I've had it.

There's a SERIOUS lack of good games on that console.

Sure, the Zelda was great.. As was No More Heroes.. But beyond that, it's really mediocre.

If you're buying a Ps3, get Valkyria Chronicles IMMEDIATELY.

I sold my wii to get a ps3, now between it my 360 and my pc i can get any game. it's a realy good idea, lots of good titles come out on the "proper" consoles very few come out on the wii. in fact the last time i had fun with the wii was zelda twilight princess.

PS3 has been an amazing choice for me and my fiance. We had a Wii and it was the best fisher price toy ever, but as a games console it was naf. Was going to get a 360 but same reasons i didn't as you, not enough exclusives im interested in, no built in wi-fi, pay to use live gold, 54.2% failure rate etc etc

So we went for the PS3 instead and we've not regretted it.

We got a pre-owned 40GB model with Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet for £249.99 from Gamestation. The blu-ray was part of the reason we brought it, but free online, better controllers IMHO(Dual Shock and SIXAXIS(tho the latter is rarely put to good use), built in wi-fi, some fu**ing awesome exclusives like Killzone, Resistance, Fat Princess, LBP, Folklore, Buzz, Uncharted, Motorstorm etc, with more to come like Project Igo, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy.

Now i'm a PC gamer at heart and consoles have never been my thing, but don't think i'm biased. As i said my fiancé had a Nintendo Wii and i've played on my friend's 360's loads(one of whom has a Wii, N64, GameCube, Xbox, 360, PS2 and PS3 and he says PS3 is his fav) and I think the PS3 is fantastic.

Only problem we had was the drive packed in, so it was then changed out there and then for a brand new 80GB model, which i'm not complaining about :)

inFAMOUS, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2 and also get God of War III and Heavy Rain, when they come out.

And then there's the multiplatform games.

I have some advice for you. Get the PS3, but DON'T sell your Wii.

Honestly I was in your same position, I'm getting a PS3 but I won't sell my Wii, even though it didn't satisfy me.

Why shouldn't you sell it? Because later you'll miss the few games you enjoyed on the Wii and wish you never sold them. Honestly, even if you get a decent amount of money for them you'll regret it later.

As for recommendations for games, well I'm been recommended Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 for shooters, though get Resistance if you wanna play co-op with a friend.

Definitely get InFamous, played the demo yesterday only for 5 minutes but I had so much fun!!!!!

Eh, I doubt. Ive beaten Super Mario Galaxy 100% with both Mario and Weegee, and I've beaten Metroid 3 and couldn't bring myself to play through it again, and Ive beaten No More heroes like 4 times on the hardest setting, and Rayman Raving Rabbids gets no play time out of me anymore, SSBB has gotten really boring and I haven't touched it in months, and Mario Party 8 SUCKED!... So yeah, I'd rather just sell it and get some money back for it and maybe save it up for a more engaging system, or some food.... or a less expensive paper weight...

Also the heavy dependence on the constant remaking of their signature franchises bugs me, as I have no interest in these franchises anymore hardly due to being overly exposed to them for so long, and the ONLY other Wii game that I have ANY interest in is Mario Kart Wii, and I KNOW that isn't going to be enough to feed mah starved gamer soul... So yeah...

Thanks for the feedback though! Much appreciated!...

I'm sorry you had to spend so much time with No More Heroes. That game would've been flamed if it showed up on the 360 or ps3.

It looks like you'll have some money left over, the price cut is official-$299.

go with the PS3, it is a beastly peice of harware, IN MY OPINION better than the 360 in hardware terms.

But if I were you I'd get a gaming PC, it will have all the games from both the 360 and PS3 plus more.
