Hmm... I prefer to go with moves that give the Same-Type Attack Bonus. The usual exceptions are HMs; my Graveler knows Rock Smash, but I could just as easily teach that to an HM slave.
My current team is as follows:
Jace, Gabite, level 28. Dragon Rage / Take Down / Slash / Sand Tomb
Raven, Empoleon, level 36. Metal Claw / BubbleBeam / Surf / Brine
Sparky, Luxray, level 36. Bite / Spark / Charge / Crunch
Gabriel, Staraptor, level 35. Close Combat / Fly / Aerial Ace / Endeavor
Magellan, Graveler, level 36. Rock Smash / Magnitude / Earthquake / Rock Blast
If I need a Pokémon specifically for HMs - which I usually do - I'll put one in the sixth slot and never use it in a fight.
