The way i see it, you are allowed to release a sequel if you ended the previous game planning for a sequel so you dont screw the story over or if you dont meet the this requirement a leap in technology that allows something new to be made is fine too.

Now for the bashing:
Devil may Cry. Since they just ruin the already weak story game after game and dont inovate any gameplay element.
Resident Evil. For remaking the same games over and over again(1,2,3,CV,0 and now 4 and 5)
Fallout spin offs, come on the main game had little to do with building armys of resistence against w/e it is this time, it was abt surviving against all ods in a wasteland, hope 3 delivers just that but one can only hope.
Sonic. As much as i loved the first few games and the first one for the dreamcast it has been going downhill for a long time, and they keep making then worst and more frequent.
God of War. One was great but bordering the repetitive, 2 was the same thing and even messed the story from the first one. the trailer for the new one was beyound pointless, no gameplay or story hints so I got mixed feelings.
Mario Sports/Party. There are just too many.
StarFox. Rare screwed this franshise on the gamecube, really sad after all the great titles they released for the 64.

I dont mind Series that dont have a main story like FFantasy, Fatal Frame, Zelda and Mario/Paper Mario as long as they keep the releases responsably or inovate at every new tittle or at least manage to make games of equal quality or greater quality.

I love metroid to death but i kinda agree that they should put Samus to rest or drasticaly reduce the number of releases, she has been working too much for the last 2 gens.

I think it's to make up for the 9-10 years she sat buried away as if Nintendo pretended it never existed.

Devil May Cry: I'm a fan of the series, but please...No more, 4 just really felt like a massive retread of every other DMC game, I can't take it anymore.

Need For Speed: Again...Please, just stop, how is there appeal in racing games?

Soul Calibur: Let the flames begin, it's popular, yes, but for the love of god why do we need another installment of what is basically the same game? In fact, can we just kill all fighting games and move on?

Halo: We all know it's coming, but it should just die with what little dignity it has left, it's all becoming the same, generic shooters time after time.

And now for my last...A step into the world of MMORPG's.

Guild Wars: There's just been too many, 4 games already that basically revolves around exactly the same thing, sure it has a story, but an MMO does NOT need a sequel to carry on the story from the previous game.

Command & Conquer. If you're not going to do it right EA, don't do it at all. Go give the IP back to Petroglyph and be done with it.

I think they should end Crysis with Crysis 2 rather than try to make a trilogy out of it. I just find it hard for Crytek to somehow manage to make 2 games more from that clichefest.

What's up with so many trilogies anyway? Halo, Thief, Matrix, Lord Of the Rings etc. are all trilogies and Star Wars consists of two trilogies (shut up). Gears of War, Crysis and Too Human were planned to be trilogies from the start. Half-Life will also probably end with Half-Life 3 and then there's the Aftermath-trilogy (you know, the episodes). I also find KoTOR 4 unlikely (I think KotOr 3 is very likely).

Not that I have anything against trilogies.

Petroglyph doesn't have anything to do with C&C. C&C was Westwood's.

Petroglyph are the remnants of Westwood. Something like half of their employees are former Westwood employees before EA betrayed them.

It seems like people blame the companies who publish these games a bit unfairly - they have no choice but to rehash the same thing over and over again because that's what people want and that's what makes money. If everyone didn't go out and play Mario Galaxy (and if you have a Wii you undoubtedly have) they'd quit making them and have to be creative. A publisher's content can only be as creative as their audience wants it to be, in my opinion.

Lost.

Wait, we talking about videogames here?

Then I say no more direct sequels to Halo. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the games, but just let it die.

I do think they should end Pokemon.
It's gone on for too long. It's stale now.
Basically, they re-release the Pokemon each time, having basically the same game, just with new Pokemon, graphics, and one or two new features.

I partially agree with most posts stating that all series should stop making sequels. If the game developers worked on new stories, new plots, new characters, and new Names, people would complain less about being force fed 'the same old trash' and would, instead, be delighted that new garbage is being added to the platter.

Final Fantasy should definitely let the title rest. If they made FF13 into a game of its own, and named it something not starting with F or ending in Fantasy, people would be treating it far differently than they are now. Now there are not only the main series, but mindless spin offs as well. I'm waiting for "Final Fantasy: Toothpaste Fairy Party Time IV" to be released.

Final Fantasy 7, like others have stated, is one specific part of the series that should cram a sock in it and go back under the rock from which it was rotting quietly. Advent Children was fine, but they should have honestly stopped there.

Wild Arms: it's already going downhill and has now bordered on suck. It needs to die before the developers destroy the old west any further than they already have.

Breath of Fire: Unless they go back to the old formula, this is another series that should be shot out back. So help me if Breath of Fire 6 ends up being like Dragon Quarter, which was tripe compared to the others; obviously BoF: DQ was made with Breath of Fire in the general title to sell it, since it was bad to begin with.

Lastly, while I'm still on an rpg streak here, Dragon Quest should stop. They did a fantastic job with the last game on the PS2, and that should be a sign to quit while they're ahead. Start something fresh. Discontinue with the next quest.

As for previous posters, I honestly don't see a problem with another Zelda being released. Yes, it's the same generic plot per game of "Zelda needs help from Link to save Hyrule from Ganandorf". However they have done fairily well the past two generations with Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. Now I do agree that some worry should be given now that they've created a Zelda game in order to sell Wii merchandise [Link's crossbow training], however as long as Nintendo does not go down that road of no return, the series should remain stable. At least more stable than Mario and Sonic.

Metroid Prime 3 was said to be the last in the trilogy. What with it being a trilogy and all. I don't know where they may take Samus next, but there will not be another Prime game. As far as series goes, however, Metroid has been primarily successful in all released. Since Prime is no longer in continuation, who knows? Maybe the next trilogy of Metroid games - if there is one - will be different and people may like the new direction.

hmm. The most common ones I've been seeing
Halo
Final Fantasy
Megaman
Sonic
Star Wars
Pokemon
And what I've believe
Halo & Final Fantasy - Saying goodbye is hard, but you must leave before you over stay your welcome
Pokemon- You haven't changed since I was 6 and that's the problem, you have tried to revolutionize yourself-

really the only good features they've come up with are day/night and battling online, and now every game is the same, I mean if they aren't going to make an effort maybe they should just end it.
but you don't change your core
No hard feelings right?
Star Wars- Always the same game with you! You did have a few strokes of brilliance (KOTOR, SB2, and Rouge Squadron) but you never achieve redemption for most releases.
Megaman-You used to be so familiar and then you went and became a JRPG, What happened?
I do look forward to Megaman 9 but that's all, I won't be returning your phone calls...
Sonic- 2d You were the man and Sonic Adventure was awesome but your releases within the last 6 years on major consoles have been the epitamy of SEGA's once proud name, the least you could do is go Quietly!

I'd love to see the pokemon series disappear now. Don't get me wrong, I like the games. They should release one final game in PROPER 3d and where you can catch all of them without that trading BS and where all the pokemon say there names instead of those horrid screeches! And it should have a story including ALL the legendary Pokemon that'll go out with a bang! Oh and they should have some voice acting for the main characters and a couple of pokemon (like mewtwo). Then the series would end on an Ultra high note!
Also NEVER!

Halo - Completely and entirely. After the first one, the series began to spiral downhill.

Final Fantasy - These games have been getting progressively worse since Squares merge with Enix.

Devil May Cry - 4 was so disappointing. They should just end it.

People may hate me for this, but

Call of Duty 4

I think that they should end the series on a high note because basically once your on top you have nowhere else to go but down. Besides, now that they moved out of the WWII phase what's wrong with making similar games and just calling them something different? Also basically no game series should go past 4 games (made back to back, so Elder Scrolls 5 doesn't count) as the writers run out of anything worth playing and the actual improvements in game play are reduced to tiny baby steps and you end up with something like Final Fantasy or worse Mario.
