Ancient Greece. There are no good games set in Ancient Greece, but it has such possibility.

Personally I think a Paradox style Grand Strategy were you play as a Greek City State would be absolutely awesome.
Titan quest. Hegemony Gold. Rome: Alexander. Tin Solders: Alexander. Zeus: Master of Olympus.

Few. Not none.

On topic: I second the "prehistoric" votes.

I'd also like to see more done with ancient Egypt, esp. mythological Egypt. Some "ancient Aliens" settings wouldn't go amiss either.

Hmmm... I would love a medieval Batman themed game :D (Come on, I know you wanna see Batman going unarmed against armored knights on warhorses)
Some other games in the setting of White wolf roleplaying games (MAGE or Werewolf come to mind first, although homonculi could be fun too)
Oh, and a hack n' slash from Slaine comics... That could work.

Okay what I want you to do is watch The Robe [http://youtu.be/2wbHZaWDmyM?t=2m41s] from 1953 and then watch Jason & The Argonauts.

We need more movies set in that kind of setting, because that shit is colourful and filled with life, The Robe is one of the best looking films I have seen and it was made over half a century ago.

Just imagine this: a game where you play a Roman Centurion rising through the ranks, now imagine that it was made by Rockstar and had brutal and satisfying combat with massive battles you could take part in.

You see I would argue none of are Ancient Greek, although the term is a bit wishy washy. Alexander and Hegemony both occur after the apex of city state culture. As for Zeus, Titan Quest and God of War etc are all just fantasy games with an ancient greek framing.

I want something nitty gritty from the height of the Hellenistic Period.

I would really like more(or even a recent one) game based on Celtic lore. I can't think of a single game off the the top of my head that has a lot to do with Celtic stories and fantasies and it isn't like there isn't a lot of unexplored potential there. I am sure there is an example I missed but I can't think of one. Aside from Hell Boy 2 but that is a movie.

Persona 3 and 4 are some of the more interesting games. Still in a gameplay perspective I find not being able to control the other characters more of a hindrance then it being an immersion breaker if it did.
You can control all the characters. At least in P4.

OP: I would like a game with a similar setting to Arcanum, I'm a sucker for steampunk.

Also would be interested in a modern day fantasy. Not ones that are: "Exactly like real life earth except trolls and shit".
But a modern setting evolved from a tolkienesque middle ages. If that makes any sense.

Urban Fantasy all the way. Aside from SMT and Vampire the Masquerade, I can't really think of any.

My other dream is a open world Elder Scrolls-esque game in an Ancient Greece that leans heavily on mythology, as all the gods are very happy to mingle with the mortals, so that would lend itself to a good bit of story/gameplay ideas, and there's all sorts of awesome ideas for enemies or open-world encounters if you read through Hesiod's "Theogony" or Ovid's "Metamorphosis."

I think a game based in the Napoleonic Wars would be awesome.

And throwing in some additional ridiculous stuff would make it that much better.

Say want you want about JRPGs, at least they know something more then "hey, let's go rip off Tolkien again". Seriously, what is wrong with Western RPGs?
I didn't know that games like Mass Effect and Fallout were Tolkien ripoffs....

A War of the Worlds game set in Victorian England (where the original novel was set). It would be first person with a giant open world (at least the size of the worlds in the first Operation Flashpoint or Armed Assault games) that would have a mixture of rural and urban areas. But while you're on foot, the invading martians are getting about in their fighting machines (unless you manage to catch them unawares at one of their landing sites) which are "higher than the tallest steeple" as the book puts it. There would be RPG elements like in Fallout 3, but you'd be using weapons and technology available to people of the day to fight the martians with - so it would be hard as hell and you'd be using stealth a lot. You could perhaps set up a battery of cannon in ambush, but you'd better have an escape route planned once the first shots go off because the martians will be all over the place with their heat-rays and black smoke. Or you could lay explosive traps or dig pitfalls. Basically you'd be fighting a guerilla war against a vastly superior foe which would force you to think about your tactics and plan every engagement to avoid winding up dead.

I had a little look at all of those games and the only one that sparked my interest was The Getaway series.. It still has the problem of being too stereotypical and cringe.. I assume that your American (forgive me if not). I'm English and watching the setting of that is like you playing a game set in America, where everyone has a thick Boston accent, is constantly eating burgers, and kill any NPC who's not American. But thanks for the selection of games, anyway :)

Nope, I'm bloody English too. That's interesting what you say about The Getaway considering the fact that the developers are, themselves, from London. One would assume things have to be dumbed down for the international market I guess. What video did you watch? I'm interested now.

The Anglo-Zulu war, or the Boer Wars... They would provide a different kind of experience...

Or something vs the French... yes that would be nice... fighting the French! [sub]Actually I suppose that would be to easy for a game to work![/sub]

It's just the accents and the lingo which annoys me most! Too 'Snatch' for my liking..
