Batman: Arkham Asylum

Assassin's Creed

Demon's Souls

Gears of War

Previous gen had a lot of really good games(Batman, Last of Us, Human Revolution, Dark Souls etc.) but Demon's Souls takes the cake in my opinion. I remember back in 2009 during the game's release I didn't really have any expectations for it, espescially since From's previous titles like King's Field and Shadow Tower were never really all that spectacular. Interesting, yes, but not something that made me hype about From titles.

But anyways when I started playing Demon's Souls the game slowly started to crawl under my skin and I think I played that game dozens of hours in the first week alone. This game really discarded every convention that had become commonplace at the time and introduced a completely new design that harkened back to gaming's roots. One of the most authentic and genuinely creative games ever made. Dark Souls was similairly good but ofcourse it was Demon's who laid the foundations.

Little did I know at the time that Demon's Souls was the product of Hidetaka Miyazaki's vision and SCEJ's resources that made the game what it was. And now they're back again for Bloodborne. *drool*

The reason why all those who claimed they didn't dislike the ending of Mass Effect 3 because it isn't a happy one are all wrong, essentially people who disliked the ending where Shepard sacrifices himself to save the galaxy is replaced with one where he gets to make blue babies with Liara, *retch*

As for classics, I think people will look back positively towards the Last of Us for taking a large leap in storytelling for the medium, Skyrim also achieved large interest, even outside of gaming circles, same as with Portal, I doubt people are going to forget Team Fortress 2 anytime soon as well

BioShock immediately comes to mind. It had (and continues to have) a pretty big influence in the medium, already proving itself as a very memorable title, and I personally enjoyed it a lot. Definitely in my top ten, if not top five, video games. It's also the title I'm most confident in gracing with the status of "classic."

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the first inFamous and Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time are some other games off the top of my head that I can see myself looking back on with a lot of reverence, even now, in fact. Oblivion in particular really defines this part of gaming history for me. Dead Space, Darksiders II and AC IV: Black Flag are some other fine examples, but I've played those too recently to judge any lasting effects.

Journey, while only about 2 hours long, was a very beautiful experience. The way you interact with other players is so engaging. You can't directly talk to people, but you can "sing" to each other, and you definitely feel attached to them as you journey with them throughout the game's beautiful landscapes. (no pun intended)
Excellent answer. To me something is a classic when it both has a strong immediate impact and leaves you with something unforgettable, an aspect which Journey excelled with. I think it will prove to be be one of the most timeless games from the seventh generation as well.

Wow, I'm happy to see so much love for the STALKER games. Honestly, around where I live, finding other people who have played the games as well is quite impossible. In fact, I don't know anyone personally who has other than myself.

Yakuza 3. After White Knight Chronicles (it was one of those "I know you don't want it" gifts given to troll me) crushed my want to play games (I sunk more hours than I should have into it), and Dead Rising 2 failed to spark it back...Yakuza 3 brought it all back to life. Been a huge fan ever since.

Far Cry 3 could have learned something from it... a lot really.

This guy won the thread already :)
You told me you don't read his posts? If you did than you'd stay far away from proclaiming him as "winning" the thread.
He likes Stalker because it isn't on consoles, isn't colourful, or "girly" not for the same reasons as you.

No denying it though I see. Sorry that I forgot the fact it wasn't a JRPG as that tends to be a big reason for you I know, and the fact that it was a small blip in the world of gaming. I totally forgot your belief that something that isn't mainstream is automatically better than anything more popular than it.

Ironic that for someone who mocked wrestling you are so easily put into a wrestling perspective.
Its like I'm talking to one of those Indie fans that thinks the attitude era was the best damn thing ever and today's performers are crap unless they've been involved in some bloody deathmatches that a total of 100 people saw and they got paid 100 bucks for.

No offense of course as if you like to watch all those bloody indies where guys cripple themselves for chump change as that is your business.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope was probably my favorite console JRPG from the last generation. It had a fun combat system and I liked how you needed some degree of skill to be really effective in battle. It wasn't even that slow of a burn compared to other, later JRPGs...like Ni No Kuni which I played for 2 hours and hated or, Final Fantasy XII which I played for far more hours, got to Chapter 11 and also hated.

If we're counting the DS as last gen...which I don't see why not, Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans is probably my all-time favorite hand-held JRPG that isn't a remake or, involve catching-em-all.

Other games from last gen that I really, really enjoyed...

Arkham City (granted, I played the Wii U version)
Bethesda RPGs in general
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Dead Space
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Dragon Age: Origins
Halo: Reach
Hatsune Miku Project Diva F
JUMP: Ultimate Stars
Just Cause 2 (granted, I've heard that this is considered early next-gen on PCs...and I believe it)
Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver
Saint's Row 2
Sleeping Dogs
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros Brawl
X-Com: Enemy Unknown

Well, for the most part I can only refer to games I've played myself, but I will try to give recognition to some titles that made a big impact on gaming and the community. For the sake of completeness I'll include games that are primarily PC but are from the same time frame.

Mass Effect (entire series)
Red Dead Redemption
Batman Arkham Asylum + Arkham City
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Far Cry 3
Saints Row (entire series)
StarCraft II
Diablo III
Minecraft
Bastion
Dark Souls
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Assassin's Creed (entire main series)
Bioshock + Bioshock Infinite
Fallout 3 * Fallout: New Vegas
Gears of War (entire series)
Uncharted (entire series)
The Last Of Us
Metro (entire series)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I probably forgot several noteworthy specimens, but this is all I can think of right now.

Valkyria Chronicles: Between it's unique blend of turn based strategy, third person shooter, and real time strategy, the awesome story, memorable cast of characters, and the beautiful art style and level design. This game is an underrated gem in the PS3's library.

Xenoblade Chronicles is also up there for me. It's packed to the brim with content, with an interesting story and setting to boot.
Totally agree with these two I would go so far as to say two of the best games ever made period nothing else from the last two gens touches them imo and very few in the gens before.

There were a load of great games but these two stand head and shoulder above everything from the last two gens for me. I only hope Xenoblade X is as good and its a shame we will probably never see another Valkyria Chronicles game on home consoles we will probably at all now especially outside of Japan.

I dont like STALKER because it aint on console mate :( !

Anyways what do you mean I dont read his posts. In the other thread I said I HAD NOT read his post, not that I do my best to ignore him. I dont even know the guy :( What do you mean :(

"and the fact that it was a small blip in the world of gaming"
Not really, no. A lot of its tech and gameplay and way of world building and gameplay is alive and well in today's games.
Everywhere from Metro, Survarium, Arma, DayZ and Far Cry to even small indie games.

And not many 7 year old games can have a simple MOD for them get 1 000 000 downloads... on release...

Hell, PC Gamer Magazine's newest issue has yet ANOTHER article on the game... not many achieve such a cult status...
... The sentence written was: He (referring to Diesel-) likes Stalker because it isn't on consoles, isn't colourful, or "girly" (all his words) not for the same reasons as you (referring to you). I'm unsure how you can reach the conclusions I said you didn't like it for those reasons, but we make mistakes.

Seems a bit odd to not catch his many posts in the other threads, but to catch this one. The fact I mentioned to you before should at least have made you take a glance at what he has been posting.

Big claim, but the whole "game X has elements from game Y" and thus clearly took inspiration/copied it is a very easy claim to make by someone. Doesn't mean its true.

Except if the game isn't small time than it invalidates his whole "little known games > popular games". You can't read my post in a vacuum out of context, you have to take into account the whole thing.

And if you were to look up the wrestling observer right now you'd see stories about jobbers from a decade ago only the hardcore would even remember. What does PC gamer magazine having an article on Stalker for their readers which are the crowd that will know what Stalker is prove? Same as the Wrestling observer doing a story on Sean O'Haire.

Well personal classics for me would be games like STALKER, Dork souls and Hotline miami but the unfortunate truth is that the most iconic game of the 7th generation is Minecraft. Think about it, not only has it sold a stupidly large amount of copies it's impact is huge and varied such as setting the precedent of alpha releases for indie games (for better or worse), huge contributions to the LP community (again for better or worse) and arguably did a good bit of help towards the general popularity of indie games.

Honestly, if all it had done was completely cut starjar from the game I would have been fine. Having Shepard survive was a nice bonus, but the main issue with the game was the completely insane decision to add a completely new character in the last 10 minutes who completely changed the meaning of everything in the entire series, (and possibly went against evidence from the game he was in) when he said that synthetics will always try to kill organics.

Ugh, that game was shit for me. There was NO OPTION to turn off that god awful head bobbing effect, made me nauseous to the point I couldn't play the game. The little I did manage to play, the mechanics were clunky and broken. Stealth didn't work for shit, most notably during that one introductory mission right out of the bunker where you have to free some guys from some mercs holed up on a farm singlehandedly. Going prone didn't do shit, those guys would somehow see me despite being on the EXACT OPPOSITE SIDE of their cone of sight, fully prone, with a knife. If I tried to shoot my way out, that wouldn't work either because you go down in 3-5 hits and don't have enough ammunition for your starter pistol to deal with the 8-12 guys that swarm you upon anyone detecting your presence.
