I'm an Englishman living in Sweden... Apparently it is possible for busses trains trams and cars to all run as normal when it snows.
They even manage to go a whole winter without running out of salt or grit. I mean, how the fuck does a country even run out of salt and grit?

You probably don't remember the fucking panic caused by snow sticking around last year.
The ice was dangerous. People were getting severely injured. The government shelled out a bunch to grit up all the sidewalks, but it wasn't good enough. People were told not to go anywhere.
It's okay for America and Canada and such. It's a common occurance for them. Their governments have plans for it. Most of Europe is left flailing in the dark.

Of course, they may be overreacting to be sensational. But you do have to remember what happened last winter.

I just love that they panic about it, to be honest I'd much rather they panic about the snowfall for months than gush for five seconds over Prince William marrying Kate Whatserface.

That snow last year was horrible, though. I have to walk to work at 4am for my job at the slaughterhouse, it was still running its daily business through the entire snowfall period and I was still pulling 11 hour shifts. The journey there is mostly uphill and I was aching all over from dragging myself through the snow for four days a week only to gut 200 or so bulls for 11 hours and walk back again. Obviously I live in the countryside, so none of the roads were gritted due to the complete lack of foresight the council had.

On the bright side, though, the snow canceled a few orders, so I had plenty of free leftover beef and pork cuts to take home for my Christmas lunch, I had so damn much of it that I dumped it all up the pub, put a little money in for the drinks and other ingredients and had a massive all-night Christmas lunch/party for anyone who felt like turning up. We even had enough left over for new year's eve nibbles, the crap left over I just gave to the dogs, I was so sick of pork and beef by then. Apparently there really is a such thing as "too much of a good thing". Who'd a thunk it, eh?

You have a point. I suppose not everyone is as able to cope with snow as I am, although this amout of snow seems to be getting more and more common, so I hope the government comes up with a good plan.

The only problem for me is that the temperature plummets, and I'm too much of a cheapskate to put the central heating on. So need to go buy fingerless gloves and thermals, to wear indoors for the next 2 or 3 months.

You have to admit though, snow IS very pretty to look at...

I know what you mean I could sit for hours just looking at the snow steadily falling upon the landscape.

I can understand Spain, Southern France, Italy and such not really planning for snow and ice... But really, even if we forget the snow, in Britain winter equals cold wet weather.

Didn't every english person learn pretty early on in primary school that ice happens in winter. It's ice that is dangerous, it's ice we slip on.

And after last year, surely England has a plan.
I had a power cut a month back... Next day I bought a flashlight so my mobile wouldn't run out of batteries.
England had "Treacherous" snow last year and this year they are having the same problems.

DUH!!!!!

Don't worry, my fellow Brits, there will be no snow!

...Just like there was no hurricane.

All hail the snow!

Better than America where everyone is freaking out about the flu or avian flu or swine flu (M1H1 or whatever)

It's so tiring because the news freaks out EVERY DAY about it then idiots who believe in that nonsense flip out about it

"THIS YEAR FLU IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH!" I'm sure...but so was the last year, and the year before that and the year before that.

Exactly my point, you'd think people would be used to it by now and just shrug it off.

Well, I just looked out the window and saw some stupid slag in a 4x4 step out the back end of her car and miss my parked car by about a foot.

Fucking stay home if you don't know what you are doing. If that ***** had clipped my vehicle I would have been out in the fucking blizzard screaming abuse at her for being a stupid little ****.

I'm looking outside at the moment. We have about an inch laying on the ground and the skies are blue and clear.

If it gets worse, just drive slower and wear an extra layer of clothing. I really can't see what all the fuss is about. This country makes a royal fuck-up of everything whenever it isn't merely grey and damp. Any sway towards warm or cold and apparently we're all gonna die!!

I feel this is fairly apt

It's about 2 inches thick over here (Hull) and everyone was panic buying, some people have said they can't come into work even though the roads are clear.
People are stupid. Fortunately, these stupid people are the ones who stand under trees in a lightning storm and fancy a bit of toast in the bath.

Got to love England. WHen there is even a few centimeter of snow we all go tits up and nothing will work. It doesn't help we don't have snow tires, our pipes were built to close to the surface so they froze and snapped last year, some people can't drive in snow etc etc. I go out in the morning and the snow just about clears my shoes and then I go over to Norway for a holiday and then the snow goes up to my knee caps and yet they seem to be doing just fine. Man we are pathetic.

EDIT: At the moment we have 0cm in Northamptonshire although it did snow earlier but it melted.
