OT:I don't think sex is necessarily ruining games. I think games that try to shoehorn a sex scene in them simply to boost sales are what ruins those games. If it's something that just happens to be in the game (like in Bioware RPGs) then cool. When it's put into games like God of War (where you simply press the B button to fuck Aphrodite) then it's stupid.

This thread got me thinking strange things, not about ivy from soul calibur but more about why games would or would not contain sex/nudity/any other taboo subject, in light of this im now going to attempt to compile a reasonable list of reasons both for and against these subjects.

Starting off with Legal, in some countries and states viewing for lack of a better word pornographic materiel isnt acceptable untill the age of twenty one, (not the case with my own country i add) since game cencorship generaly tops out at an 18 certificate or mature rating equivilant it could be possible to argue that such things in games could be potentialy illegal to view depending on your region. This does however work in the other way aswell, if the game is rated an 18's/mature product then there is no reason legaly why it couldnt contain taboo subject matter, i say this as i have no working knowledge of cencorship laws and im under the impression that so long as the product is clearly labeled then there shouldnt be an issue.

Moving on to Morals, This is alittle more subjective because everyone see's these things differently to some it's moraly objectional to contain nudity etc, to others its not a problem, so realy this comes down to what the development team has in mind when creating the product. A game like saints row for example, lets your murder people in a large varitiy of ways running them over in cars, shooting them or just beating them to death with a giant wobbly cock so at this point arguing that its immoral to contain nudity is somewhat hypocritical.

Realism, this is probably the easier to defend, because as much as games may try to avoid these subjects they take place daily and realy games offer a great way to teach players about the issues of racial biggotry and so on, But on the flip side, games are made primarily to be entertaining and that becomes a hard pill to swallow if games confronted people with real world problems.

Artistic value, if anyone is serious about advancing the medium then nudity for artistic value is an obvious choice to make, after all painters and sculpters have been doing it for years, films and books also use nudity for artistic reasons, in opposition of this though most games are not made for the artistic value they bring, but for the cathartic ones and trying to argue that nudity is artistic in a game like halo would loose all credibility.

I guess the final reason would be plain and simple Titillation, You can already buy movies that market this, hell my local HMV (a media retailer, films, books, music etc) on the highstreet has a small section dedicated to porn, its not hidden away either its just crammed in next to the world cinema and martial arts sections. So making games for this seems like a logical step forward, im aware that in some countries this is already very prevelant but im just asuming most people reading this post are not from such a country and the idea of a sex game is considerably less common. I can't realy think of a good argument against games made specificaly for this, atleast one that doesnt come down to Legal/Moral objections which i've already covered.

To round it off, please feel free to contribute any information i may be lacking,(especialy concerning legalalities) any other reasons you can think of either for or against 'taboo' subjects in games.

After reading through this to spell check i realise somthing, i've completely missed the actual topic of discussion. If its ruining games, honestly i dont think it is, if you make that claim then you have to stand by it for every other form of media that has used nudity or sex in its history, because games as a medium are no less worthy than poetry, paintings and so forth. To say that nuditiy ruins games is frankly somthing im not prepared todo, i will admit that its not always appropriate and by no means should be in every game rated 18/mature, there is a place for it i think perhaps we've yet to truly find it.

*EDIT*

Technicle reasons, the effect it would have on gameplay i can't believe i forgot this, to use some examples in a game like skyrim where your characters armor has both postive and negative values, (high armor count, slower movment speed etc) removing that armor puts the player at a disadvantage and because of that you can expect the players to remain clothed ninety percent of the time. As another example in saints row you can customise your clothes but what your wearing has no effect on gameplay, so taking that into account why would dev's spend time on creating hundreds of different clothes if most of the players would run around naked with no penalties. I dont think there are any technicle reasons you could use to argue for nudity in a game, it certainly wouldnt add anything to gameplay unless the game was designed with perverts in mind.

I don't mind it if it's part of the story, but i hate it when its used as a reward in games like Mass Effect.

First, could I be excused for saying: Please capitalize and use punctuation. Easier to read with at least a period or two.

Second, and more on topic, I think most developers put sex in a game when they A) are forced to by their publisher, or B) Know their game wont be that good, and sex will sell a couple more copies. Sometimes (Most times?), both.

Hell, I remember when I was young, this one 8-bit game had a "naked woman" in it. Quotes for the imagination you would have to have used to enjoy it. Only slightly more recent was a game called BMXXX. Never played it, but a friend said it was disappointing. Never asked in what way, frankly didn't want to know. Regardless, don't assume sex in a game ruins it, assume that a game is ruined before it, if it's bad.

The argument seems to be a criticism that games sometimes employ sex appeal as a cheap and effective way of increasing publicity and the size of their audience.

Well, you could say basically the same thing of any entertainment medium that has ever existed.

firstly Fox news is just a antagonistic mass of hatred and bad journalism ( as always this is just my opinion and furthermore my own experience of Fox News is limited to their screw ups)

secondly videogames need a proper rating system or one that retailers and parents listened to which I think would go some way to avoiding all of the "no mass effect is ruining our children"
bull for example.

thirdly no I don't think it's ruining games sex and by extension sexuality is an integral part of the human experience to use the terminology of toss pot I will however admit that there are certain games which are ruined by sex to be more specific how sex is presented.

fourthly video gaming needs to evolve in the eyes of the public as long as our beloved hobby is still labelled as something exclusively for children there will always be certain groups of people channelling Mary Whitehouse who will want to protect the children from something we need to reach the same position that books are in I can walk into a bookstore and shop for steampunk erotica upstairs while kids read the gruffalo's child downstairs as long as parents and retailers take an interest in what quote unquote miners are playing there shouldn't be a problem.

Ok, I'll play one of those screwed up Jap games then. My point is, I have no need for it in my RPGs.
Sex is part of life.. it seems a little immature to equate all sex to porn.
Also i know the word entitled has lost all meaning on this site but it fits if you demand that YOUR games cant have sex... they aren't your games, you didn't make them the devs can put whatever they want in THEIR games... I can't actually think of any W-RPGs that forced you to have sex, so even then you can't complain about it being included.

OT: No. Sex is not ruining games. Sex can be included as part of a mature well rounded storyline or character arc or whatever, or it can be included for shock value or to appeal to 12 year old boys... But just because it's included does not automatically make something good or bad.

The only games I play that have any sex in them are Dragon Age, and I suppose I did somewhat find it ruined when my only way to stay together with Alistair was to force him to have sex with Morrigan, but other than that any sex/nudity in those games hasn't really affected me at all.

well [spoiler/] Bonnie Mcfarland gets kidnapped (and presumibly raped) by the walton gang..however we never see anything..its only implied

(mabey he's trolling?)

though there was raiese (Raiez?) getting it on with that peasant girl which was pretty "in-yoour face" for a game....and there was nothing wrong with that because it wasnt there for the veiws pleasure but to show that raiez was hardly a good leader

just a horny A-hole [/spoiler]

Sex doesnt ruin games, people over-racting to sex in video games is ruining them.

Honestly, people seem to act like sex is some vulgar new fad whenever it appears in a game. I've seen worst stuff on Channel 4.

To be fair, the only time I've ever heard of really explicit Japanese games is when I've seen them in a banned list.

Nobody 'needs' sex in a game and, specifically in the case of RPG's, I've yet to play one where it's something you can't avoid. So what makes you so uncomfortable about it?

Sex in games doesn't make it terrible though I do admit some of the scenes are awkward to watch (dragon age, mass effect). Some are really tastefully done and could be classed as seperate erotica (witcher 2).

Side note who else had a friend/girlfriend/sister/mother walk in on certain witcher 2 scenes when you weren't expecting them to come up and having to quickly say this isn't what it looks like I swear I didn't know about it being this explicit!

Luckily for me it was a mate though there was some ridicule.
