You're right! I take it back, his post was at least fake polite. You just came right out and told him to piss off so yeah...

Oh man, I love this. <-- Not sarcasm

It's absolutely worth playing, but I just wish I had rented it instead of buying it. Like I said, my game budget is quite limited.

I suppose that's the only precaution I could reccomend. Since it's apparently supposed to be hit or miss, rent it rather than buying it.
Yeah I burrowed it from a friend when it first came out and loved it. I bought it used for decently cheap and haven't played it since but I'm still glad to have it in my collection.
Rent or burrow it if you want but you can likely find it in a bargain bin somewhere

Good job killing off the entire species, though. You monster.
Believe me, I felt quite bad after killing some of them.
Notice the little things..

All the reaaaaaaaaaaly old ruins, some of them are arenas. these things were meant to be battled.

Wander (protaganists name) Is skilled with a bow and arrow but really clumsy with a sword. He has a past life

Notice he gets dirtier and paler, like his soul is dying

its all there. you just have to look for it

I see it as being a more feminine game so it is understandable that some people disliked it.
I see it as a more feminine game too. Mostly because the main character, in typical Japanese style, looks like a woman.

I have sort of a love hate relationship with SotC. On the one hand, it's very atmospheric and some of the battles are pretty amazing to behold. On the other hand, it controls like ass, is extremely repetitive, and the main character couldn't look more effeminate without wearing a skirt.
He does look like a girl, doesn't he.

Shadow of The Colossus is a rare game in that it's incredibly minimalist, and I, like many others, found it very emotive.

The story is simple, but beautiful, and chooses not to bog you down with wordiness.

Is this game perfect? No. But it creates an amazing and unique experience, and is probably the most successful artistic game to date.

My point? You didn't like it for the exact reason that so many did like it. And you're allowed to not like it, I can't argue with that. I'm happy as long as you don't argue the games quality. It is, in my opinion, one of the most important games to ever be made, purely because it focuses on being emotive rather than wordy.

Shadow of the Colossus isn't a game for everyone. I'm an FPS douchebag and I loved every minute of it. One of my brothers, a hardcore adventure gamer, didn't even get to Gaius (The Earth knight, third colossus) because he didn't like it.

One mans treasure is anothers garbage.

Has a soft face and curved hips too. Very effeminate hero. I think my first guy crush on a video game character XD

SoTC does indeed look ropey on an HDTV. Don't expect life to go high rez, just because you have a new plasma. Playing old games on a cathode ray tube has bleed, colour effects, etc, that make older games look utter crap on new LCDs, etc.

Can I recommend, if you have the space, to keep an old CRT TV or two somewhere in storage; one day, they will be incredibly rare. Those old console games you love, especially the light gun games, should be experienced as they were intended; note, for longevity, I am a Virtual Console* fan too, but holding the actual controller the game was made for seems just right.

* other retro fixes are available

P.S. This wasn't my opinion. I bought it off eBay.

Lesbians!!!
But then whats with stabbing things with a sword...
Tranies!!!

I jest. I jest.

It is a fair point though, why do almost all japanese games feature males that can't be distinguished as such without a visit to Wiki? Japanese men certainly don't look like women...

I thought it was moving for the subversion of the classical Greek hero, the isolation of overcoming trials and the explosion of both fulfillment and disappointment to be found in the final act.

Shadow of the Colossus is a game that means something. It's not just about playing the game and "winning" the game. It has some small gameplay flaws, and many people can't get past what it IS as a game to see, well, what it IS. If you don't like SotC, fine, but don't pretend it's not brilliant because compared to 99% of video games it's freaking Francis Ford Coppola or Stanley Kubrick.

You play way to much Halo,Call Of Duty and Counter Strike.
This was actually brought up a couple times really fast, so I want to address it.

It's an argument that would hold more credence if my total experience with all of those games was playing Halo 2 years ago and then about a year later getting totally pwned in the multiplayer for it.

I'm a writer, and I've been spending a lot of time recently trying to hammer out good, relatable characters and an emotionally engaging way for them to drive a plot, so that's just the mode my brain is in.

That would be spot on and true, but there is one major flaw with what you said.

actual controllers the games were made for are shit. I doubt that anyone in the history of the world has created a shittier joystick than Nintendo when they release the N64 Dino-foot controller.

I played Jet Force Gemini more than i'd like to admit, and always found it bloody hard; nearly impossible in some boss fights. However, using a classic controller for the Wii made the game almost to easy, they had actually skewed the difficulty of the game to make up for the shitty joystick. When i realized that i laugh my ass off.

I haven't played this game yet, but from what OP said and the videos of gameplay I've seen, whats been said looks pretty accurate I suppose.

Still, I won't judge if I haven't played, so next thing for me to do is go and buy it. :)

It's just an art style, one that is not limited to Japan since in the High Renaissance artists often chose to present males in the nude because idealized male youthfulness looked like women when they wore robes.

Oh, and play Ico; think of it as a prequel. It might set the emotional context better for SoTC.
SotC is actually a prequel to Ico. The only discernible connection (says a man who hasn't played Ico) is that Wander gets horns, thus beginning the line of horned boys.

Watch... its the boy who dies. Just because everyone thinks the griffin will die, they will alter the story so the boy dies. :D

OT: I loved SotC, but its really only good if you stop and admire it. Try this, as your riding to your next enemy, look around. Look out in the distance and try to look for striped lizards or round fruit. If you explore and look around for these things, then you will start to see why people like it.
...
Or at least that's my opinion.
(PS: I'm not saying the gathering quests are the only thing that makes this game good >____>)
