I wouldn't call them obscure, but no one other than my circle of friends who listens to my CDs when we're driving seems to know the band "Bowling For Soup". Probably one of my favorite groups aside from various Japanese rock groups and various classic rock groups.

Gojira

French hippies playing some of the heaviest metal you can find, singing about nature, life, flying to space, and other weird topics.

The Adventures of Duane and BrandO! They did a bunch of hip-hop renditions of video game tunes, kind of like brentalfloss but rap. I don't even listen to rap and I love it, if you've played the games then the lyrics will nostalgiagasm u into a very nice place. You can mostly find them on youtube, but their LP (or EP, whichever applies) is available.

One band? The Adventures of Robert Savage.

They had one very obscure LP in 1971, but it was awesome.

Good "J-Core" artists like DJ Technorch, Blasterhead, and USAO, not this DJ Sharpnel crap.

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs are amazing and as long as they even release so much as an album yearly, they will be as much of a household name as Number Girl in the "indie" Japanese rock world.

µ-Ziq is more highly underrated and thrown under the bus than ignored. I blame the erratic quality of his album releases (ROYAL ASTRONOMY SUX).

Swans is still kind of popular among some groups but for the most part ignored by "casual" music listeners.

Vivian Girls are still technically cult status, but they're becoming more popular.

Dir en Grey

Although it depends on what part of the world you're talking about when saying they're "Obscure."
Nevertheless,Dir en grey is freakin great J-metal band that more people should know about.
They have their own cult following as well.
Speaking of Obscure, one of their best songs is also called "Obscure."
Check out the video on youtube, although sadly, much of it has been censored.

"NO I know all your moves and I feel all your pain, you're a slave to the princess, a fucking shame, Hyrule could be ours, come take my hand, we could rule the kingdom, devour the land."

That's the best line from their best song.

The band I'd pick would be Lightning Bolt, a Noise Rock duo from Providence, Rhode Island. Read their wikipedia article, the way they play shows and their instrument setups are very innovative. Not to mention the drummer is a BEAST. It's not for everybody, but if you like it, you LOVE it.

Go download their album Hypermagic Mountain.
