Found an interesting story on reddit in response to this.

I was in one of these situations a couple of years ago on a bridge. I was the only car going slow enough not to wreck. Really scary situation, there was nothing to do, but sit there watching car after car after semi truck come blazing into the pile up. I think not paying attention is the standard on the road.

sheesh. im glad no one rear ended you. in these situation, saving yourself the first time is one thing. what happens after is a whole another ball game

Thanks for the response! I was very lucky where I was positioned, but not as lucky as one of the firemen that showed up to the scene.
The fire truck had just arrived and was positioned directly behind the pileup to alert incoming traffic and protect the people in the pileup itself. However, the bridge had a huge slope—which was causing the wrecks bc people would drive up the slope and not see the pileup until they were atop the slope, then slam their brakes and slide down into the pile up. The fire truck, for some reason, wasn’t positioned where it was visible, and apparently wasn’t barricading the wreck.
The very first fireman came out and was checking the first couple of cars. He checked on me, told me to stay in the car, and continued down, evaluating the incident. He was about 15 feet in front of my vehicle when I heard tires screeching and looked in my mirror to find an F150 losing control. The driver somehow maneuvered around the fire truck without hitting it and was barreling straight towards the firemen.
The fireman turned around and saw the truck coming at him and erratically tried to gtfo of there and ended up slipping on the ice and falling right in the path of the f150 that lost control. He was utterly helpless on the ice. The driver was somehow able to direct the truck around the fireman lying on the ice and slammed into the barrier.
The dude stood up and was of course visibly shaken by the incident, but he actually started to continue on down to finish the evaluation until the The captain (or sergeant or whatever the term) set him down for Ems evaluation.
