hi.
Woman here.
I don't care about a "capture-the-babe" mode in a video game that includes a "love smack on the booty."
Why? Because 1. It's a video game and 2. It's humorous.
Sure, the game is kind of sexist, but... Sexist humor is some of the funniest humor out there.
"God created the Earth, then there was rest. God created man, then there was rest. God created woman. Since then, neither God nor man has rested."
I will not, however, make you a sandwich. >:D

Also, isn't the point of the game to rescue women from aliens or something? That seems more chivalrous than sexist, unless she wants to claim that makes women look weak and unable to rescue themselves (lolwut?).

I can begin by agreeing with all of this.

Then I can move on to say that I hope that Shelby Knox learns that the way to show a company that you will not stand for a product of theirs... because of the opinions they seem to stand for... in your opinion... is to not buy the product. Trying to get them banned, on the other hand is censorship and unamerican as dirty political tactics goes, because you are literally trying to shape art by attacking a person's wallet.
The Penny Arcade argument is a bad one.

Shooting enemy soldiers you are in a war against is not murder.

In fact if some people did complain that you killed people in a war game and called it murder I bet you Penny Arcade would mock them mercilessly (and they'd be in the right for doing so).

I'm pretty sure Gabe is being facetious here, using his own absurdity to expose the Tycho's equally absurd reaction to this nugget of info.

Really, the point they wanted to make might have been better off with Twisp and Catsby.
Who?

These two, basically whenever Penny Arcade want to pull a totally random joke on us, they use these characters. I couldn't explain their appeal if I tried, but I think they're funny.

if people waited 12 years for this game to come out, people are going to get this game one way or another.
If Walmart decides to ban it, and the game has a record breaking sale, I'll laugh. hard.

This is kinda ridiculous. If they didn't want this game in the hands of "young people" they'd advocate better education for parents on what an "M" esrb rating is and what it "might or might not" do to their childs mind. :/

As a female I have to say the whole idea of "Capture the Babe" is funny.

I own a Nintendo 64 and when I was several years younger I picked up this game, well I think my parents picked it up...err no my grandfather sent this to me as a birthday present, along with Quake II. I plan on revisiting both titles as I never got far in either.

In Duke's case, I never made it past the first level. Which is probably good, since I was never exposed to much of misogyny in the game. I never felt that the shooting aspect was difficult at all, I was actually quite fond of shooters and pretty decent at them. I like to say that I grew up on Goldeneye as a kid, but that wasn't the first shooter I had played or even my first game.

I beat Goldeneye though and while it doesn't have the range of difficulty in enemies it does have its tough spots. I still beat it though and that's largely in part to its linear paths or I should say more linear than Duke's or Quake's. I just got lost in those and once I had gotten to the point where I killed everyone I could find I just never knew that I was supposed to grab 'keys' to open up doors that would lead to more levels. The game was in serious need of a tutorial. I've actually watched an LP of the first level and I was dumbstruck by what the developers expected you to find through exploration. It's something I've never gotten used to in a shooter.

I've grown fonder of less linear levels over the years though, but I still feel that Duke was in need of some serious hand holding in the first few levels to introduce me to the concept of exploration in the game.

So, I never got to enjoy the misogyny in Duke Nukem and you know I'm glad I never did. I might have enjoyed it as an 8 year old, but I find it insulting as an adult gamer. No, I don't want to be stereotyped as male that loves nothing more than 3d rendered tits. I don't enjoy that at all, alright maybe a little, but if that's the huge selling point to the franchise I don't want any part of that.

Besides, Duke is over the top. What happened to a little subtley?

EDIT: Why couldn't it be 'Rescue the Damsel'? That's something I could understand a little better as a base concept. I guess that's just a little bit too much class for Duke.

Also, I was reading the linked page about the CEO rescuing the franchise. I lol'd when he said that the two most iconic characters in video games. They happen to be the most sexed up icons of videogames and I think that reflects the guy's mindset, but certainly not the most iconic.

Well, the people for whom the game is intended are old enough to understand that humor. If younger people play the game it's the parents fault.

I'm for this petition.

I love seeing all the various shapes and sizes of people at Walmart. I hope nothing comes in the way of my people-watching entertainment.

Yeah, right.

This smells like Gearbox marketing from miles away. It's PR for the game guys...

Like the religious groups "protests" that EA had orchistrated to promote Dante's Inferno, only done a lot better.

It is still the same thing.

I don't see her running around screaming that AMC needs to cancel Mad Men. I was all for her when I watched the documentary about her, but this just makes me lose all respect for her. I consider myself to be a feminist, but this is moronic.

While we're at it, let's make it so Walmart can't carry the seasons of Mad Men, sell any Disney movie, or even computers because those can connect to the internet and there be misogynists on the interwebs.

While we're at it, let's outlaw all sexist, racist, and ageist jokes and just confine ourself to locked rooms with duct tape over our mouths so we can't say anything because god forbid somebody get offended. Then we can all hold hands, sing Kumbayah, and talk wonderful things about the land of butterflies and gumdrops that we all live in where sex and violence doesn't exist and babies are created by magical flowers. Then we can all see the muffin man on the moon made of cheese.

Dear gods! Not Walmart! Then that means... that means I'll have to resort to going to Gamestop where I reserved the game...! How dare they make a whole bunch of noise about something that doesn't even impact me in the slightest!

Seriously, all I hear is "blah blah blah Free Advertisement blah blah." All this petition's going to do is get the folks who already decided to buy this game years ago want to buy this game even more. Ah well, more power to this lady... Meanwhile, I'll be kicking ass and running out of bubblegum.

BAWWW, VIDYA GAME IS NOTHING BUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, I WANT WALMART TO NOT CARRY THIS GAME!

okay, Ill just get it from Hastings, Game Stop, EBGames, Best Buy, and Game Bro's., gee, who would of thought removing a game form WALMART would cause such an impact, good thing we have these social commentators to set us idiots straight, right?
Can't help but echo this. Who cares about wal-mart when the only people who shop for games at Wal-Mart are parents for their children and said children?

You started by comparing my physical appearance to hers. You can only do that if you have a reference for both people. Which you don't... So... We can chalk this one down to "straight out of your arse" then?
When patronizing someone, you shouldn't misuse your own language quite so much. It doesn't lend itself to the illusion of superiority so much. Cases in point...I didn't compare your appearance to anyone. Since you asserted that an average-looking woman was quite hideous and that supposed hideousness had an inextricable link to her belief in civil liberties, I asked what caused you to think that you were hot shit. It was a fair question and I'm sure you have some pics of yourself on your hard drive...the phrase is "chalk it UP to." The rest of that sentence is composed of the kind of stuff that kept Orwell up at night.

Caliostro said:
I never claimed it was.
Then why did you proclaim it so boldly, as though you were being daring or courageous by saying it?

Caliostro said:
I don't follow celebrity gossip for the most part, so you'll have to link me to the actual info. That said, I never said only ugly women are idiots, or that beautiful women are never retarded. I said that in this specific case, aggressive feminists, I don't recall a beautiful one, and if they exist they're definitely the minority.
Again, with the poor language. You can head over to dictionary.com for the definition of gossip if you like. Reading up on films one loves and the people who make them does not constitute gossip. It's not exactly the same as reading up on which celebs are fucking.

The rest of your comment is marred by a sort of distortion that makes me wonder if it's intentional or if you just listen to this sort of pundit all day long. Firstly, your initial comments were of sweeping generalizations and were not at all specific. You asserted quite strongly that all feminists that you were aware of (and by extension so must all of them) were as "hideous" as you presented Ms. Knox to be. I further wonder what constitutes an "aggressive" feminist in your newly amended statement. Do you mean only activists and writers, because if so that's hardly fair. Have you taken a look at ANY activists and writers lately? Not exactly supermodels. While I perform a Bing search for actresses who identify themselves as feminists, I wonder - since you surely agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what exactly was the point of your original assertion?

Geena Davis, Ellen Page, Ashley Judd, Julia Styles. Then again, if you think Ms. Knox is "ugly" then I suppose these four are simply "OK looking."

Caliostro said:
True... How is this related?
OK, now I see why you're so afraid of feminism...you don't understand it!
