ok no offence to you but your list of FPS games kinda implies you haven't been play such games for very long as none of those games can be called old, except for maybe halo 1, so I actually don't consider you to be a vertren of FPSs even if you do have a lot of experience with them.

CoD is still a great seires with MW being there best told and placed story to date with an awesome follow up, but sequals never live up to the 1st game, but black ops didn't pace itself for even half a level, it was fun and all but the story was just kill this guy then blow this up and now kill this other guy, if it didn't have that big brainwashing twist in it I'd probably consider it to be crap. If they go back to story that can pace itself instead of selling out like they did with World at War the Cod series will actually become even better and more popular.
Halo 1 was the best in the series because is was so new and different and the Halo series is now over and I loved the halo series from 1st seeing the flood to finally achieving peace between earth and the coverent and the prequal was alright I guess but it was mainly for storyline purposes then gameplay.
Any game that is now made that has the word halo in it is not a halo game but a sellout piece of fan boy bait that has the word halo on it made to make the rich richer and fan boys cry at how their much loved franshise has been roughened.

I've been playing computer games since the original gameboy and FPS's since Doom on the PS1. I can't be bothered to create an arbitary list but COD4 is my second favourite game of this gen (after GTA IV). I'm a dual console owner and I would also consider COD4 probably my favourite FPS of all time (with honourablt mentions to Black (PS2) Die Hard 2 (PS1) and Ultimate Doom (PS1).

While the original poster felt the need to list platformers and RPG's to her/his list I will refain as I fail to see how my appreciation of Ratchet and Clank or Fallout adds credence to my opinion. Having said that I would feel prefectly comftorable posting on this thread (in spite of the request I didn't) even if Black Ops was the only game I had ever played. Snobbery FTL.

As for why COD 4 stands out. With the exception of the M16, 3x frag and claymores it was a beautifully balqnced game (never had a problem with martyrdom as I thought dead silence was better). It is also an utterly compulsive, I loved the maps the accessibility, the "just one more game syndrome" in my opinion a pretty much perfect online shooter.

The SP is one of my favourite SP experiences of this gen. I found it emotionally and morally engaging, with brilliant set pieces (specifically 'Ghillies in the Mist') and a variety of paces and styles of gameplay rewarded.

Essentially for all these reasons and because I am not a snob it is probably my favourite ever FPS and unlike the OP I get the impression I am writing from the perspective of five gens of gaming not two.

Under your criteria I've literally played at LEAST 3 times the games you've listed. Probably 4-5. I could fairly easily match your list with just pre-2000 games I've played. And that was before the FPS boom.

I usually enjoy the CoD games simply because they have a massive following of gamers. That combined with the RPG-like "leveling up and gaining gun equipment" makes for a fun experience. Usually the levels are urban and fairly detailed. Most games don't have that. Sure it wouldn't be too hard to replicate, but apparently nobody tries.

Seriously though? Ratchet and Clank isn't even remotely close to a shooter, man.

This.
Also add in the original Unreal Tournament, Quake, and CS. That's where most of the original core FPS/shooter game ideas CAME from.

Edit : Following your formula Contra would be considered a shooter. My list just tripled with all the pre-playstation games. The SNES/NES/GEN/SAT/SEGACD/GAMEBOY/GAMEGEAR/ATARI/and all the rarely known consoles (Like the 3DO) had massive amounts of old school "Shooters".

I liked them both, been playing them since the Start. CoD 2 is still the best in the series so far and CoD 4 just behind that, but since then I have lost interest quickly, especially in the multiplayer which keeps getting worse due to balance issues, the people who play it and charging you crazy prices for maps instead of releasing patches. It's annoying when my friends don't get how I'm bored of the series when I have been playing it since the first, and don't seem to get I've played the series A LOT more than them, and noticed it's drastic decline in the past few iterations.

Halo I find somewhat fun but now I'm not really a fan of its gameplay. I love Halo's universe and story, neither of which are really fleshed out in the games so I prefer the books and comics more than the games. I've also never liked Halo multiplayer. The games are always dominated by someone who knows everything about the game and has been playing for too long, and I find the gameplay of 'jump up and down like an idiot to get a kill' retarded. My best game in the series is actually Halo Wars, the RTS.

I've been playing shooters for over 14 years now. CoD 4 was the last great multiplayer CoD imho. I played a lot of CoD 2. Halo, I've played some, but I've always been a PC gamer, so by the time Halo came out on PC I was on to bigger and better things.

These days I play Quake 3 / Quake Live for the most part. I've been a Q3 player for about 10 years now.

One of my killstreaks from a few months back:
I never, ever want to see you in my games of Quake Live

OT: Played more FPS games than the OP for longer, TPS is not entirely relevant since both the listed games were FPS and not TPS. CoD's good because I still like to play it, and I do not like halo. End of.

I love unreal tournament, especially the 2004 one. Played it to the death. Never heard of the third one untill a few weeks ago, dunno if anyone is still playing :(

does anyone know that? Are there still people playing Unreal Tournament on Ps3? Will pick it up then.

Other favorites are Halo on PC and Battlefield 2. Played both for months. I liked the times back then when you had lots of shooters with different feel, and I could play them for a long time because they felt completely fresh... Now, I've played MW2, BlOps, Killzone 3 in that order, and they feel so similar! BF BC 2 was cool, but I dont think it holds a candle to Battlefield 2.

So to the OP: I actually dont know why I liked halo. Guess it's part the community, part the way it felt, part all the wacky stuff which could happen, and just the loads of things you can do (I spent several matches of CTF just driving around in a warthog, crushing people and playing taxi for the flag guy, typing WARTHOG in all caps for every kill, loved that for some reason XD)

and I dont like Cod. Do like to play MW2 some times for fun, but mainly bevause it has incredible griefing opportunities, which cause people to get mad and yell at you. I love that sometimes >:D

I would bet that a lot of people feel a sort of loyalty to CoD and Halo because they have bought so many of their games. Personally I buy whatever game looks good despite the title.

Oh lord another "Why do people like things that I don't?" thread. Why is the concept of a different opinion so bloody difficult for you people to understand?

You know, I never once considered any Halo or Call of Duty game to truly be bad. It just uses a lot of ideas from the previous ones, but that's not bad, just stagnating. Pokemon B/W and New Super Mario Bros. weren't terrible games, they just don't seem as good because we've played them all before.

My favorite shooters go out to games from Bethesda and Valve.

OT: I really hate to point this out, and I don't consider myself to be a "veteran" shooter player, but if you are a "veteran" (and to be honest I don't see why this matters and have never heard the term before) why are all the games you list excluding the early Halos so new? This doesn't make you a "veteran" it makes you affluent - what about classics like Marathon or Doom, THEY would make you veteran.

But (on topic now) I played CoD4 and didn't like it (I probably would now) I play far too much MW2 because, IMO, it is a good, fun game (I'm not denying there are bugs/imbalances), but I didn't like BlOps that much, so I sold it. I played Halo 3 into the ground and bought Wars, ODST and Reach out of a sense of almost obligation and because I hoped the same epic community would spring up. Essentially though I buy games if I think I will enjoy them, although I've reached the point where I play only for the multiplayer because companies tend to resort to set pieces and arena fights way too often.

Also I buy newer shooters partially for the joy of the first two months where noobs who don't play shooters are online, however I recently bought BF:BC2 after missing it when it first came out and am enjoying that for the opposite reason (noob likes to pwn lvl50s).

I wouldn't say Halo is my favorite series, but I'm nonetheless extremely fond of it. Why? Well, good game design, I guess. The actual gameplay is fun, and its lighthearted run-and-gun style is a refreshing break from cover-based shooters. It's also relatively friendly to new players, in my opinion, and its multiplayer is simply outstanding. Bungie's one of the few developers that remembers how much fun it can be to system-link some consoles together and play with seven friends in the same room (I hold such a Halo party about once a month). They also support their community extremely well - just look at the Forge maps that have been incorporated into Reach's matchmaking - and I like the hard-but-not-too-hard sci-fi setting.

The Halo games aren't perfect, but they're fun and great for playing with friends.

Also, I'm not sure why a massive list of games is required to be a dedicated player of shooters (or as I like to call it, Master Sergeant Shooter Person). But if we're throwing around credentials now, I may as well join in, if only because I'm curious to see just how many shooters I've played.

I'm not a fan of halo. The first I loved, but all the rest have been lacking.

The last COD games I enjoyed were modern warfare and world at war. Modern warfare was the last COD that made an impression, and world at war was a perfect end for their WW2 era games.

But the newest ones just don't feel right. The games are getting more complicated, but at the same time simpler. With modern weapons, even in real life, it really depends on who sees who first as to who's going to win. Some people do suck terribly, but once you play for long enough you get past the awful noob level no matter who you are.

I miss class based, and strategic shooters that forced co-operation which turned into amazing multiplayer. Even in the "tactical" games in COD half of the matches are decided by killing before the time is up.

So, I just want to talk to those of us who have played a lot of FPS or TPS games in there time.

My basis for this is on that I have played a lot of shooters in my time:

Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Star Wars: Battlefront
Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Resident Evil 5
Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo: ODST
Halo: Reach
Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1
Half Life 2: Episode 2
Battlefield: Bad Company
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Battlefield 1942
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
inFamous
Medal of Honor
SOCOM: Confrontation
Red Dead: Redemption
Bioshock
Bioshock 2
MAG
Red Faction: Guerrilla
FarCry 2
Wanted: Weapons of Fate
Mercenaries 2
Unreal Tournament 3
Warhawk
Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
Eat Lead
Armored Core 4
Armored Core 2
Team Fortress 2
Borderlands
Dead Space
Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
Just Cause 2

Now, to anyone who can match that kind of shooter gaming and is still has CoD or Halo as their favorite (or close) shooter: Why? What is seriously so good about this series after playing so much else in the genre?

(Also: Please spoil a good list of games if you respond. Don't be a schmuck. I listed about 50ish games I have thoroughly played, if you can't get close to that your not what I'm looking for.)
Jeeze that looks my my list... only mine is far more obscure (Earth Defense Force, HeXen, Slave Zero, Painkiller, Tribes, etc.)

But yeah on the note of me being an ACTUAL shooter fan

I don't see the point either, I'm surrounded by people that will play nothing BUT CoD and Halo, and I played them and honestly I've never liked them... then again I should mention that I HATE and I mean HAAAAAATE regen health with a passion

Dude! Halo doesn't have regenerating health! it has SHIELDS! they're totally different and not at all the same! durr hurr hurr

and I should mention that when I was at a party and started playing Tribes I had some people line up behind me to try it out, then after awhile of them stopping reach to play some tribes I got bored, started playing Painkiller, and their eyes went wide like they just found the holy grail or something... kinda a bad sign when people say they're shooter vets, only play 2 games, then when the see something they would have never looked up on their own because of how close-minded they are they look at it like it's god

...huh, that was much longer then I meant for it to be

long story short
I've played Halo/CoD, never liked either, showed my games to Halo/CoD fans that insulted my games, they're now addicted to them

Armored core is a shooter? It's a good series, don't get me wrong, but the game aims for you unless you use rockets.
It is an awesome series, but I defiantly see your point

I would consider it a shooter though because I don't think "mech simulator" would be accurate or existant...

besides it has about the same Auto-Aim level as half of todays shooters :p

ANYways
Halo will always be close to my heart as my first m-rated game;. also the first game that had an interesting plot with twists 'n stuff. also the music is great and i mean Great. Fucking fantastic music (and i'm not someone who makes a habit of swearing). Other than that, well, the enemies are cool, the characters are badass, the guns are interesting and powerful, the graphics are pretty, the colors are vibrant, the atmosphere is epic, and lets face it: a nostalgia filter helps out when it comes to faults. Oh yeah, and the game just feels... Clean, smooth, it's hard to describe.

Call of Duty sucks and so does Halo.

You aren't a shooter "veteran" if you play those games.
No matter for how long...
Not really contributing here.... if he was being honest about playing a quarter of the games he listed then I think he qualifies as a shooter veteran.

I think, don't quote me, that shooters are mostly simplistic and appeal to us because we feel like we have skill when we quickly turn a corner and gun down an enemy soldier before they can gun us down. It also appeals in the way other game types do, by giving a sense of completion and dominance by succeeded and winning against greater odds.
