Not everyone wants to own a gun though. Also, concealed carry laws, like the ones we have in Minnesota, tend to deter the less violent criminals, like muggers and thieves, and give the victims of more violent crime, like rape or murder, a better chance to defend themselves.
That's because they're lucky enough to have a police force.[footnote] The analogy with nuclear weapons applies here, too. Most European nations do not have nuclear weapons, but instead are allied with nations that do.[/footnote] The concealed carry laws are those which oblige people to have their guns on show unless they have a permit, right?

Also, after a quick search, I find that Minnesota has one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the USA. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States_by_state] You've just proven my point that tighter regulation on guns reduces homicides.

Self defence is a RIGHT, not a privilage.
Straw man argument. We are not discussing whether self defence is a right.

Why didn't anyone shoot back? Oh wait....
That doesn't stop the large amounts of shootings in the US, so please take your gun loving attitude elsewhere, people died today.

Can people not go and use the sensless murder of 12 people to advocate their differing beliefs towards gun control. This is a time when our thoughts should be with the victims and their families - not political one-upmanship over which country has a better stance towards the legality of gun ownership.
People die every day. Do not expect any special treatment for those who are practically strangers to all of us.

Ideas, on the other hand, are immortal.
A little bit of empathy goes a long way!

Ugh, this kind of thing is sickening. And FYI, America has one of the highest crime rates in the world. In terms of people killed with guns, the UK has around 100 a year, canada has about 67, Japan has around 38 while americas grand total is a whoping 11,000. See "Bowling for Columbine."

Too bad no one could have stopped him sooner. Glad I live in a state where self defense is a fiercely protected right.

Heard "Gosfoth" and freaked but apparently not the town at the end of my road...

Seriously, if people want to blow their brains out then go ahead and do it. Just don't feel such a misplaced sense of importance as to take others with them.

Outlawing knives would be useless, anything can be used as a weapon. When i was in high school me and my friends would pretend to stab each other with pens. Put in a real situation, stabbing with a pen would not be as effective as with a knife but it is possible to reach the same conclusion.

Only an idiot looks at this and says, "I know how to solve this, MOAR GUNS!!!1!."

People died, we can hope that something happens. The murderer committed suicide, that might be justice to some, probably not. Also, I would never imagine anything like this would happen in such a rural area.

EDIT: Also I'd like to add that by tomorrow the Daily Mail will have said the shooter is an Asylum Seeker Polish Muslim Liberal.

Finally, someone talking sense! I say he was also hopped up on all that rap music.

In all seriousness my condolences go to the families of the victims and I hope the media doesn't hound them about this.

Sadly, that's how it goes.

And how do you expect to defend yourself against a man in a cab, with a gun?

Self defence is not the problem here and neither is England's policy on it, should somebody have killed the man in an act of self defence then they would not have been procicuted for it.

In a way, i want to see CNN cite this as a source for another bullshit argument. Just to see them apologise for it after they have been bombarded by hate mail.

Wow... that's pretty big news. That shows me for not watching the news today.

Obviously it won't seem that big to you Americans with your near constant state of blood fueled rampages.

Just kidding guys.
That's New York, bunch of gun toting assholes, gunning people down for no reason!*is from NY and is joking*

I never got people flipping a shit and shooting innocents because they had a rough day at work where their boss called them mean and nasty things. I do the same thing granted but it's in a GAME, ya know where driving your car down the sidewalk in a fluorescent pink car is hilarious and has no one ACTUALLY dying?...And is hilarious.

Concealed carry= talk to sheriff, fill out a form, and he hands you a permit to purchase and a permit to carry concealed, as long as you are over 21 and not prohibited from owning a firearm. In fact, it is legal to carry openly with these permits. Tighter regulations? If you want those, try California. I happen to live here buddy, and it is EXTREMELY easy to get a gun if you are a law abiding citizen. It takes about 15-20 minutes and consists of a phone call and filling out a form.
You would know this if you actually looked up what concealed carry laws are.http://apps.carryconcealed.net/legal/minnesota-ccw-state-laws.php[/url

No... actually, you're right.

Seriously, we Americans kill each other with such predictable regularity that it almost makes you think our country is designed to drive people nuts and then make it easy for them to get guns.

Because it is.

Want proof? Just read our Bill of Rights and then watch the news for four hours. You'll get it.

nothing really it happens with knifes too

bad thing either way though
True, if people want to kill they will find ways to do it. You could ban sharp objects and people will just beat or strangle people to death. You could cut everybody's limbs off but would mutilating people really make the world better.
Actually sharp objects ARE banned here too! Anything with a blade longer then 3 inches - you're not allowed to have without a good reason.

Same with big wooden sticks... You really can't have any weapons or anything considered to be a weapon on the street here. Hell, I'm sure they'll start restricting where people who train martial arts are allowed and not allowed to go.

The first thing I thought when I read this article was "oh. Another one?" I didn't know they were this much rarer in the UK than the US... I'm quite glad actually :p. Then again after this one, I'm sure they're going to tighten regulations further. Ie: make even the shotgun license much much harder to obtain. Oh well.

In all seriousness though, I'm a bit creeped out that something like this has happened so close - even if it's up north. The image of peoples bodies on the street... just gives me shivers o0.
