With Star Trek, DC comics and yet another Star Wars MMO on their way, it got me thinking about games companies picking up popular franchises and making them online rpgs.

So i pose these questions to you escapists:

1. Will it ever end? Will we have an mmo for freaking everything by the end of the decade?
2. What franchises from literature, movies/TV and non-rpg games DO YOU want to be made into MMOs?
3. And what franchises really shouldn't be made into a MMO?

Personally i'd love a Discworld mmorpg, if done right it could be awesome.

I would like a fallout MMO. But you've said non-RPG games and the like, so i'd go with the movie angle instead, perhaps Blade would make a good MMO, 3 classes to start with Vamp, human or Hunter, if it was well done it could work to a certain degree.

as a slight off topic, (although not anymore cos the original post was edited) worst possible game to turn MMO?
Mario?

I always thought the Legend of Zelda MMO that expands the Zelda universe.
And you could choose between races like Hylian, Geurdo, Zora, Goron, Deku, etc...
But everyone would just end up being link.

I don't doubt there will be a Fallout or Elder Scrolls MMO eventually and i added that question to the main post so its no longer off topic! yay!

Yes, there is a very crappy, fan made one with graphics on par with the GBA and only one server. I would most definitely like to see a professionally made one.

As for your first question, I doubt it. As long as we keep making interesting universes, there will always be people who want to become a part of that world (I.E. play an MMO of it).

There is? I've never heard anything of it. >_>

*googles*

Holy SH*T there is... how did I not know this?

Well, it looks like a GBA game, which is unfortunate though.

It is a really pitiful looking game from what I can tell. Not a *Real* MMO in my opinion...

this what you meant? with a single server and 700 user capacity? Nah, I wouldn't really call that massive.

Still, no wonder I never heard of it.

a REAL pokemon MMO would be awesome, and I don't know why there isn't one already.

1. no, there will always be franchise milking, they may move away from the MMOs but it will never end

2. to be honest i dont want any of my favorite books to be made into a MMO, the same way i dont want my favorite sandwich to be turned into an stew, i enjoy a good peanut-butter and jelly sandwich and i enjoy stews in general but i dont want either to be turned into the other.

3. Sherlock Holmes, now there are other i dont want to be turned into an MMO, but since sherlock holmes failed at clik n point, and considering its devoted fanbase and the popularity of the video franchise (oh there will be more) its not unlikely, and it really shouldn't happen.

I would be a Rito, just so I could fly over everyone and laugh at their futile attempts to hit me.

Until a Hylian shot me down with their mad bow skillz...

Gorons would be mad though. =D

OT: Pokemon MMO must be made, that's all that I can really think of right now. Rumoured they're making it, but I don't believe I've seen confirmation anywhere.

They'll make a pokemon one, but it will make it so RETARDED the guys who have been clamoring for it since Blue will get pissed off and log off permanently after the first year.

It'll sell really well at first though. It would probably outsell Modern Warfare 2 quite easily.

Anyway, it probably will end ocne there's no more useful worlds to explore. Or when gamers backlash and the market moves away from them.

Nah, i reckon a pokemon mmo would kill the franchise, they make their money off an endless stream of different colour versions and they ensure that at least a few Nintendo handhelds get sold. Don't think Nintendo would like it if Pokemon gets ported to playstation, xbox or pc.

eh, i think you are just being a tad bit cynical. You can't go around saying something is doomed to be crap when it doesn't even exist, and perhaps might not ever exist, in the first place.

And I don't see too many ways they could screw it up, and they have a product that would sell like um... something that sells alot. _>

There only been a few MMOs centered around Pet systems already, but Pokemon could really be original with it and do it well, because that is what Pokemon is in the first place. Training, Tournaments, breeding, dueling, pageants, gyms. That's basically everything they would need to have for it.

I don't really see how they could severely screw it up unless they made certain pokemon cash shop only...

just my opinion though.

*EDIT*

Nah, it wouldn't kill the franchise. In fact, quite the opposite. Plenty of MMOs are still running that started as early as 10 years ago, so it wouldn't kill it from a money standpoint. Just because you release an MMO, doesn't mean you have to stop making games. Just look at Final Fantasy. They have Final Fantasy 11, which still has an established community to this day, despite being even older than WoW. Final Fantasy didn't just up and die once an MMO was released.

Ah, there are plenty of other titles to play as Link! :] I'd be a Zora, for sure.

And to OP: As for certain MMOs never being made, I've got to say, Shadow of the Colossus. Though it would be immensely fun as a coop game, there simply is no way to incorporate more than one player without disrupting the mood. And the atmosphere, clearly, is one of the driving forces of the game- isolation. Doesn't quite work with little tweens yelling in your headset.

And, along with the others, a true Pokemon MMO would be fun as well.
