Should I buy a gamecube?

Looking at the thread "What's with all the Gamecube hate?", I was seeing that a lot of people enjoyed and/or still enjoy the gamecube. I've been thinking about buying a gamecube. Yeah I'm about 10 or so years off, but I've built this attraction to the previous generation games. I guess I'm growing a bit weary of the current games today. Now don't get me wrong I still find some games today worth it. Also I've never really got to experience the games from the pervious generation. I kinda started late in gaming (to my terms and experience) and I want to catch up on the past.

I looked at Gamestop. Yeah I know some to a lot of people hate that place, but I like it. I've never had any major problems. A Gamecube is $30 refurbished and game at in the $10-$20 price range (typically). So if you think about it the amount you pay for a game today ($60) that can get you a Gamecube and a game or two. Now I have a Wii with a Gamecube controller, memory card, and two games: Resident Evil 4 and Call of Duty: Big Red One. Yeah I could just go buy the games and play them on my Wii. Yet I've always had this notion that if you're going to play any retro to previous gen. games you should play them on the original console. So the obvious question is- Should I go spend $30 (which I have no problem spending) on a referbished Gamecube or just play them on my Wii or Other (if there is one).

I wouldn't trust gamestop to sell you a working cube. Even if you did get one that worked, about 98% of the gamecube games they sell are FUBAR (all gamecube games sold by gamestop are used by the way)

That's what I did and admittedly I got lucky with my system but it took me 5 transactions, several weeks and, 3 stores before I found a working copy of SSBM. I still have yet to come across a working copy of Pokemon Gale of Darkness.

If you have a Wii, it's fully backwards compatable with Gamecube games and the gamecube controller and memory card. If you don't have a Wii than go ahead and roll those dice. If you have a Play n Trade near you then go there instead of Gamestop since they actually repair their consoles and resurface their game discs. Failing that...like I said, good luck.

Interesting. I swear I've never had transaction problems or any problems for that matter from Gamestop. There are 3 GSs by me and only one do I go to because it's really nice and the other two are crap by comparison. But the manager quit so I might look into Play n Trade. One opened up near me about a year or two ago. Only been in there once. Never bought anything. But I'll give it a go possible.

$30?

I bought mine at $60, and I still consider it a worthwhile investment. Should give you my answer.

I've never seen one so FUBAR that it didn't work without it looking like it had been run over by a tank. Then again, I'd always make sure it worked before you decide to keep it. But there are a ton of really under appreciated games for the Cube.

Oh no, I believed you. My point was that I bought it when a used one cost $60...which was six or seven years ago, and I haven't once regretted the purchase. I still far prefer playing Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, Fire Emblem, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, and the like on the Cube rather than a Wii.

Doesn't apply to Metroid Prime, but only because MP Trilogy made the games kick ass with Wii controls.

Personally I say just play Game Cube games on your Wii. It works perfectly fine on the Wii, and one of the major perks of the Wii is that it IS fully backwards compatible, so it seems kind of pointless to buy a Game Cube. The only real reason you might want a Game Cube now is for the Game Boy Player so you can record footage of GBA games if you're into video making. Also I guess if you desperately NEED to have a LAN party for Mario Kart and Kirby Air Ride, you'd need an actual Game Cube for that, but let's face it, nobody did that. I totally understand the playing retro games on the original console thing. I hardly ever play the Virtual Console since I'd much rather play on the original console with the controller it was made for. But with the Wii you don't have that problem since you CAN use the original controller for it.

So yeah, just play it on your Wii. As for some game suggestions, I'd say get yourself a copy of Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, Zelda Four Swords Adventures, and if you're into the whole Mario Party scene, go with Mario Party 5. And if you're lucky enough to stumble across some DK Bongos and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, pick those up since it's an amazing game. (Though most certainly NOT apartment friendly, just a heads up)

Oh, and I was super lucky when I was searching for a Game Cube to buy after the Wii came out. (I wanted it for the Game Boy Player to record footage) I went to a Zellers, and they were desperately trying to sell their old Game Cube stock, so I got a brand new Game Cube bundled with Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door for $50 bucks. One of my best video game purchases ever.

If you have any interest in classic gaming, from last gen to NES (sometimes Atari but not much luck of games from that era or earlier) Play-N-Trade is something I've only recently discovered since moving to GA and I haven't stepped foot in a Gamestop since. I could gush about the place but I feel I've done a bit much of that...just comparison shop. Check out some gamecube discs at both places and you'll see what I mean. And as I mentioned, PNT does disc resurfacing.

What? Why the hell would you do that. It would be one thing if you were talking about a really old game on its original system versus a port or emulator, but this is hardly even retro, its just the previous gen. The Wii can play it just the same and it even uses the same controller, so the experience will not be any different.

So I say don't waste your money, just buy the games.

What these guys say. If you're not interested in the Gameboy Player, just spend your $30 on games. There's no noticable difference between playing games on a Gamecube or a Wii

Go with the Wii.
Now if you didn't have a Wii? Then go with the Gamecube. That thing is amazing.

The cost of smokes is ridiculous.

I agree that if you already have a Wii, then forget grabbing a GC, just because trying to find a working GC nowadays is next to impossible.

They were temperamental to begin with.

Besides, the GC library is a little disappointing anyway, theres only about 10 games I could recommend with a straight face, because the console just didn't do that well. Only big exclusive title that made an impact was the Mario Kart: Double Dash and Smash Bros. Everything else, did ok or really badly.

Oh and Gamestop is a complete rip off anyway. Seriously, shop around, and I find most NEW games cheaper than the second hand ones they sell.

I would say that it's worth it. I liked Star Fox Adventures on the Game Cube, though I didn't have much chance to play it. Go for it. It has some pretty good games.

Captcha: totally cancembe
Like the way it sounds, I'm gonna start saying this instead of "totally cool".
