Should I buy Fallout 3 or Oblivion on Steam?

Hey guys, so I'm getting a new desktop this week that can actually run some current gen games (still not a gaming computer, mind you) and I wanted to celebrate by getting a new game on Steam, but I'm stuck between Oblivion and Fallout 3. I've already played through both of these games on the 360, but I absolutely loved modding Morrowind and I wanted to play the expansions (although I did play Shivering Isles already).

So I don't need to know which you think is better overall, but specifically which one has a better variety of mods, better expansions, and will run fine on my computer.

The computer has 8GB of RAM, Intel Core? i5-3450 processor, and an AMD Radeon HD 7570 video card.

[small]Oh, and if you say Oblivion, should I get the deluxe or normal edition?[/small]

Well Oblivion only has one expansion besides Shivering Isles, whereas FO3 has the 5 DLC...

Personally I like Oblivion more, but that's just because I prefer fantasy settings. If you haven't played any of the FO3 DLC you'll probably find more new content in its GOTY then you will in Oblivions, assuming you played all the major questlines already.

Edit: You could also go to the Nexus for each and poke around looking at the mods, seeing which ones sound more interesting to you.

I say Oblivion probably has the best mods because it has been around longer. Plus it has a mod that makes it an entirely new game. So yeah, Oblivion(plus if you want Fallout 3 just get Fallout New Vegas because it is better in every way)
Oh and I would get the Deluxe edition. It depends on if you want all this extra DLC

There's a ton more to do in Oblivion- more quests, more caves to explore, more cities, more people to talk to. The combat has its issues, but it's still a very fun game that still looks solid. Definitely give it a whirl.

Fallout 3 is a lot of fun too. It's shallower than it likes to pretend, but the setting is cool, there are plenty of memorable quests, and the battles are fun. New Vegas is better, but this game definitely has its charms.

You'll be happy either way you go.

Fallout 3, to me. (Oh yeah, that wasn't predictable AT ALL. FalloutJack suggesting a Fallout game? NAW!)

As for extras? Yeah, there's five of them, and you can probably get your bestio mods to insert alot of funny and weird and awesome into the world. For instance... You know how you never get to ride anything in these games? Well, it so happens there's a mod to pretty much take control of Enclave AND their Vertibirds, and that's just one example...though flight is a gooood start.

My honest recommendation? Get them both, then get Skyrim and New Vegas.

As for which you should play first, depends on the answer to this question; arrows or bullets?

This.
Why only get one when they're both at discounted prices, and they're incredibly moddable, and if you get the GOTY you get lots of extra content?
Seems like a good deal to me.

Like many said before, try to get both if you can.
If not get Oblivion, especially with Shivering Isles since I find it to be one of the best expansion you can ever get for a game like that, also there is allot more stuff to do and you can even become a vampire, can you do that in fallout?

Would say Fallout 3. I loved that game up so hard it had babies.
Yes. Babies. I had babies with fallout 3 and now have to pay child support. ;-;
But seriously, I found the combat to be better, the story to be more interesting, exploration to be more fun...

This is going to be a hard choice because it all comes down to opinions. Personally, I found Oblivion boring as shit, and FO3 is probably one of my favorite games of all time. Of course outside of my opinion Oblivion is considered a great game, and you might end up sharing my opinion once you've played it; or feeling completely opposed by it and have a hell of a lot of fun. Either way, you won't know until you try it and I don't think anyone's opinion can really hold sway of that.

Oblivion was on a massive sale recently, not sure if it still is. Picked it up for like £5.

Interesting, I'd say Fallout is definitely a better game, but Oblivion gains much more from mods. On the other hand you've played all the Oblivion DLC while Fallout has 3 pretty good ones and 2 crappy ones.

I'd probably still give it to Fallout, there are some good content mods and with 3 DLC there should be plenty of stuff. I always find Oblivion needs so many mods it's hard to get it running in a stable fashion. I'm assuming you already have Skyrim, but if not then Fallout segues better into that game.

Why no New Vegas? Because you should get the New Vegas GOTY. Of the two listed Oblivion ONLY for Nehrim. Only thing about Oblivion I ever liked. Still...New Vegas...go on...

Fallout 3 has an amazing atmosphere and is incredibly fun, in my opinion. Oblivion has horrendous faces, stiff voice-acting and worse graphics than Fallout.

Granted, I have never been a big Elder Scrolls fan in first place.

Fallout without a doubt, mind you they are more or less the same thing. But I had way more fun with FO3.

Both! but Fallout three NEEDS FOOK2 (fallout 3 overhaul kit), otherwise it can get somewhat annoying very quickly (in my opinion :p) also iron sights mod is a very good idea. Also its worth getting Oblivion just for the shivering isles expansion, that and its just a good game anyways

Do you have windows 7 because there have been loads of compaints regarding fallout 3 and windows 7, its a pain in the arse to run on that OS. I don't know if oblivion is having the same problems (even though its the same engine isn't it?)

Fallout 3 also requires Games for Windows Live to run. If you do buy the game, download the GFWL disabler which can be found here http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/1086.
