Why not get both you should be able to get both game of the year editions for around $30+ atm and if you wait for a sale even cheaper (I was able to get oblivion deluxe edition around $14 awhile back during one of their sales)

Anyway both games are amazing when modded thought I do admit oblivion without mods got me bored of it after a few hours ( with mods I can play it for hundreds of hours) while fallout I played all of it the first time vanilla and many times after I with mods

It's not the OS... I use vista and Fallout 3 works perfectly fine 99% of the time. Even New Vegas is very playable.

Vista gets a lot of shit it doesn't deserve.

OT:

Oblivion has more stuff to do. And I like TES universe more than Fallout's.
Huh, that's interesting I guess it might be something to do with the operating system not liking the mods I had, who knows.

And yeah, that's another definite plus for oblivion

Get Fallout New Vegas. IMHO, better that Fallout 3, Oblivion and Skyrim put together, even though its a smaller world and the map is full of unnecessary invisible walls.

Whatever game you choose will need the unofficial patches for the game, though. Especially Oblivion, IMHO its unplayable without the unofficial patches.

The question can be answered by you.

Guns or swords?

It's that simple.

Same thing I tell everyone who asks this type of question: save up until you can afford both, then flip a coin to see which one you play first.

Like many said before, try to get both if you can.
If not get Oblivion, especially with Shivering Isles since I find it to be one of the best expansion you can ever get for a game like that, also there is allot more stuff to do and you can even become a vampire, can you do that in fallout?
Not wanting to rant at you, but that argument has always been a pet peeve. It's so easily turned around, example: You can even become addicted to drugs, can you do that? Like I said, it's just a pet peeve, no offense needed.

As for what you should get, I would say both. They're both amazing games, but it all comes down to personal taste. They both have very big flaws, and run like crap on a lot of systems but they both have things they do better than the other, I think the levelling system is much better in fallout 3, but I think the expansion for oblivion is
Much better than anything fallout 3 had.

Windows Vista runs FO3 even worse than 7 though. Sooooooo many crashes :p
Unless you mod it which OP plans on doing. After modding up Fallout 3(with just the basics: FWE, MMM, etc), I didn't have any problems.

While I personally enjoyed Fallout 3 more than any other game this gen I would have to say OP should get Oblivion just because it has more (and some more impressive) mods.

Fallout 3 falls flat on its ass for me. I severely dislike the lack of iron sights and it ruins the game completely for me (VATS is also horrible). New Vegas is much better simply because of iron sights.

Between those two, Oblivion every time.
Really? Iron sights broke it for you?
Once again, OP plans on modding it and will most likely have them.
The things that New Vegas improved upon (except the story) started as a F3 mod... most of its in FWE.

And what's wrong with VATS? It gives the player a cinematic kill; way more elegant and fun (not to mention that it shows that some devs put some effort into gameplay design) than a QTE.

it probably couldn't play any current or future games like Skyrim without taking an fps hit.
You'd be surprised.

Though Skyrim isn't exactly a graphics powerhouse. I'd say right now S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Crysis 2 and The Witcher 2 are today's PC benchmarks and your rig should be able to run them perfectly (at least Crysis 2, anyway).
I agree about crysis and the witcher, but Stalker? All of those games run incredibly well on my pc, getting about 100fps always. Whereas the witcher 2 on max settings is nigh on unplayable. May I ask what Stalker game you were talking about? Because I actually don't own clear sky, so I may be wrong somewhat. Sorry fir the off topic, I'll add a little bit more on topic. To the OP, I would reccomend getting some of the big overhaul mods for each game. The wanderers edition mod for fallout is an incredible improvement upon the main game. Since your pc is actually very good, I would get some of the graphics mods like the texture packs and the enb mods which improve shading a ton.

Fallout 3. Oblivion's still a great game, but Fallout kicks it out of the park. You'll also get your money's worth with the GOTY edition, since you get the Broken Steel content. Oblivion, on the other hand, has one of the worst GOTY Editions I've ever seen- Shivering Isles, Knights of The Nine, and if you're lucky? Horse Armour.

I also think Fallout has a better story and sidequests.

Call of Pripyat can really push systems, at least on Extreme. See also Metro 2033.

Though I take STALKER back. I'm gonna go ahead and say Serious Sam 3. That thing is murder. Not as much as Witcher 2, which I'm willing to bet is the most system-crippling game out right now, but certainly it's up there. Though I'm... I'm starting to think these things are poorly optimized and not actually more advanced. That is exactly the case with Clear Sky, which outright doesn't work properly with ATI cards fullstop.

I modded it and it still didn't work. No iron-sights with realistic guns is a no deal for me. I despise hip-shooting unless it's an unrealistic gun (a la most guns in TF2)

It's not fun, it's incredibly dull. In NV I turned off cinematic kills because it was a waste of time. It's also unbearably stupid to have cinematic kills for a gun.

Well, I don't have that many mods (less than a dozen at least...including Mod Manager and all that) but one of them must do the iron sights thing because I got it. It might be a setting in FWE, that one has more options that I haven't completely explored. And what game are we talking about that has realistic guns anyway?

What I think I like most about VATS is that it makes the game accessible to people who don't play shooters AND (as you pointed out) it & the killcam are optional.
Besides, I think of as being more of an RPG than a shooter.

I would Oblivion, and I wouldn't get it on Steam. Go grab them on Amazon.com. You will get hard copies, and you won't have to deal with Steam. Besides, you could get a better deal on Amazon.com.

New Vegas I'd say, it's way better than Fallout 3, as is the DLC, (Big Empty and Lonesome road being my favs), if you have Skyrim, I wouldn't bother with Oblivion as while it's a great game on its own, it's going to feel very clunky after having played Skyrim.
