Should I continue ME1 or just drop it and go straight into ME2?

KEEP PLAYING! Trust me, alot of stuff is made easier if you play the first one than do the sequel (make a poll, man). Paraphrasing for Yahtzee, you can upload your character from the first game into the second meaning that the choices you made in the first one are present in this one making the whole universe feel like a pair of nice old comfy blue jeans.
I think it was space trousers, but I agree with you. :)
Play it and skip the sidequests!

I played Mass Effect 2 first, on the PS3. Then I went out and bought an Xbox 360 just so that I could play Mass Effect 1. Very much worth it.

Play through ME1 first. I found it so much more rewarding to continue my playthrough of the series with the same character. Your previous actions do affect ME2 and that for me makes the experience better.

It's 100x better playing ME2 with all the nods and references but more importantly
the default in ME2 with the Council live/die is that the died o_O
In my, and the designers/writers, opinion that is the most important decision in the game and so you really should see whether they go one way or the other.
What this guy said. I played ME2 first, and I regret it deeply. The experience is so much cooler if you play through the first game. It does get better, you won't be "slogging through it" for too much longer. And it has one of the coolest plot twists ever. Just wait till you go to Virmire. If that doesn't make you want to finish the game, then maybe you shouldn't be playing through this series to begin with.

I found the story, combat and atmosphere of ME1 to be faaaar superior to ME2 (but I love them both, even though I probably only love ME2 is because it is the sequel to ME1 ^^).

But even if you end up preferring ME2, the story continuity, i.e. all the choices you will make over ME1 impacting the events of ME2, even when they're just minor events, make it much, much better.

I'm in a similar position right now. Due to hard drive mixups, I lost all my ME1/2 data, and need to get a playthrough of 2 done again before the final one comes out, but I really don't want to force myself to play the first one again. I loved the extra touches you got for transferring a file, but I'm still on the fence about the whole thing.

I don't think those are compatible with gaming consoles.
Indeed. You said hard drive so I assumed you had a PC (last console I had was a PS2, which doesn't have a hard drive). I guess you're stuck then.

Yes, play through ME1 all the way. Other wise, the choices you don't make get made for you, and that's no fun at all.

With regards to the Mako, seriously, am I the ONLY PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE that enjoyed it? I thought it was fun! It was at least realistic. The thought that all planets in the galaxy would have Earth-normal gravity is stupid, and the moments with the Thresher Maw were made only that much more tense, scary, and filled with thoughts of OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD THAT GIANT WORM THING IS GOING TO EAT ME when coupled with the fact that I couldn't control my car as easily as the Warthogs in Halo. It also made me feel like even more of a complete badass when I finally killed the thing. *Sigh*. And be honest, was the planet-scanning mechanic AT ALL BETTER than the Mako? I don't care if they made us play riding a toboggan on the ground in ME3 if it means I don't have to go through the god-awful process of resource mining again.

I actually started out with Mass Effect 2, finished a few playthroughs, and finally went back to play the first one.

The first one is 100% completely worth playing. I had the general gist of the story as I read up on it before playing 2, but there is nothing like actually playing the first one to get down the foundation of the series. Many storylines and actions from 1 will play out on 2 as well. If you were to skip the first then these storylines are decided for you in the 2nd. I think it's much better to have influence on everything you can so once you play through the 2nd one as well, you are all set and ready for 3. :)

Not only that, but the gameplay improves in 2 so if you playthrough 1, you get a better understanding and appreciation for all the love 2 gets. That's not to say 1 is a bad game at all. It's just nice to see that they just made a good game (ME) GREAT (ME2).

I'm sorta in the same situation of the OP about this, I'm currently going through ME 1 and keep getting stuck on the same part over and over, due to awkward control schemes and whatnot, It's gotten to the point with me that I've just stop playing it out of frustration, but I also have ME2 which I got at the same time, and I'm also wondering whether it'll be better off just skipping the rest of ME1 and just going straight to 2.

My answer: If you are having problems with it, or are just bored playing through, skip it. If you have to play something for a while for it to get good, I'd rather not have to play through the bad part.

I'd say keep playing ME1 because it's a great game.

Also If you don't beat the game and import your character, you won't get extra money, paragon/renegade points.

Also any choices you can make in the first game will be made for you if you don't import.

There are also unique encounters depending on your choices in the first, your fan on the citadel is one of these missions. Yes some side quests allow unique encounters, but mostly you'll just get msgs from people, like: thanks for saving my ass from (insert person/situation here).

I could get detailed, but I won't post any spoilers.

Though if you don't like your character you can edit his/her appearance at the start of the second (not gender just facial changes). You can also keep the appearance if you want. You also pick another class because this game is more action oriented than the first (but less rpg oriented as well, some prefer this).

Some sidequests not all, some have not only a major effect on the universe but your companions as well. Some can be skipped but not if it appears to effect a specific character.

Yeah, probably just skip out on ME1, I don't think my ME1 decisions will change ME3 all that much...I hope.

Fair enough, I don't recall if it's easy to distinguish the non-important ones though.
I've only done one playthrough of Mass Effect, and I completed pretty much everything. If I were to start again (probably won't), I'd skip a lot of it.
