get both. though i own both, i get more fun out of the 360, the ps3 doesnt have quite a big enough selection and the multiplayer for it is sub par when compared to the xbox.

Tough choice both have great exclusive games while I prefer the Xbox 360 overall as a console the PS3 still has great exclusives like Demon's Souls, Uncharted, Heavy Rain and Infamous. I'd say 360 just because I prefer it but if you have some disposable income then you should get both of them.

I actually bought a PS3 a few weeks ago (Three Weeks ago), and I enjoy using it so much more than a 360.

I borrowed my friend's 360 for two weeks(I didn't abuse it by going around using his name saying bad things on other games) and all it did for me was when he didn't pay his account, I had a little over five games, and two of them were FPS, and the rest weren't my cup of tea.

I have my PS3 for almost a month now, and having the ability of streaming Netflix movies using my account is wonderful (I should mention the friend who has the 360 also uses my Netflix online account, we are just that good of friends, and when he didn't pay, I couldn't instant view my own account)

The system itself has its own faults (It has froze twice on Playstation Home) but what system doesn't? I personally enjoy PS3 for its games and the quality of its content and less about its looks.

It may have been a little bit more spendy than the 360, but if the game library looks plenty diverse for you, I would say go for it.

From your descriptions of what you like, get a PS3. The only thing to recommend the 360 over it is access to XBox Live, if you're into that sort of thing.
Fun fact: the slowest first-run PS3s still have faster hardware than the newest generation 360s.

If it's backwards compatibility you want; the 360 does a good job.

For modern exclusives; PS3 is now your choice.

Also I don't think PS3 ever had a 50% or + failure rate.
What this guy said. If backwards compatibility means something to you, then Xbox. You won't find a PS3 with BC for a reasonable price if you find one at all. Although the failure rate of the PS3's have always stayed under the 20% and are actually in the same catagory as the Wii for failure rates. The Wii may actually have a higher failure rate.

Now it depends on what kind of games you like. PS3 is gaining tremendous ground on exclusives selection, but this is really a preference thing so it really depends more on what you like to play. RPGs specifically are about equal on them really. Just go to a game shop or site online and look at the selection for each and see which one you would prefer I guess. PS3 sounds like a good buy if you can forgo the BC though. If not, Xbox 360.

No system is necessarily better than the other, no matter who says otherwise... *cough* -anboys *cough*!
It's all matter of preference; the PS3 has more exclusives, and the XBox 360 has a larger online community and better support for online games.

The XBox still suffers the largest fail-rate of all three major systems, though fortunately, the newer models rectified much of the problems that the older ones had in the past.

There is not many stealth-exclusives limited to a system.

FPS-wise both systems share good exlusives; the XBox has Halo and the best (ok... only) online support for Call of Duty games, and the PS3 has the Killzone and Resistance franchises.

Both have a good selection of retro games. Though the PSN store has PS1 ports, and the PS3 has HD-PS2 games coming to the shelves.

Its all bout your needs and wants. Need friends? Xbox. Want blu-ray? PS3. Need girl? Neither. Or both if shes a gamer too. Just to cover all bases. Oh, and keep the Wii. Gotta love the classics on the VC.

it really depends on what kinds of games you like to play and how you like to play them. if you like online multiplayers then the xbox is the way to go,if single player/light online player then get a ps3. have equal graphics, online features on the xbox are better, buts its single player games fall short. the ps3 has free online play and can be used to watch dvds and blu-ray and it has a good but not great web browser. games are mostly the same but like i said xbox has more and better online multiplayers and, the ps3 has more and better single players.

Dear God. There's a ton of misinformation on this thread already and it isn't even on its second page yet (as of writing this). Why is it that no one can actually be impartial on this topic?

Okay, guys. I have a 360 and a PS3, and for christ's sake, they both have good aspects and flaws in measures so equal I literally couldn't pick a favourite if I had to. I don't think two machines have been so evenly matched since the Genesis/Mega Drive and SNES duked it out.

But, you know what? For the sake of people out there who genuinely want to know this sort of thing, I'm going to compare aspects of the two systems. The OP can read this and decide for himself. Plus, who knows? Maybe someone, somewhere, will have an epiphany and realise that neither console is drastically superior based simply on the fact that it's the console they own.

BluRay vs DVD:
The PS3 uses 25 gb single layer blu ray discs as standard. A handful of games (like FF XIII) come on 50gb dual-layered blu rays. The Xbox 360 uses dual-layered (8.5gb) DVDs. Both storage forms have their advantages. Much more content can be packed onto a single blu ray disc - negating the need for disc swapping - while DVDs can be read significantly faster. This leads to less discs (and occasionally extra content, as in Dead Space 2) for the PS3, and fewer/faster load times for the 360.

Game catalogue
When it comes to full retail releases, the PS3 generally has more quality exclusives, whereas the 360 tends to get the better versions of multi-platform games. The difference between most multi-plat games is usually indiscernible, and occasionally the PS3 gets the better version (as with FF XIII), but if you look at comparisons between the different console versions (available on many gaming websites), you'll usually find the 360 edges out the PS3 version with slightly superior graphics and faster load times.

Online services
This is an age-old argument. It's inarguable that Xbox Live is a superior service, but whether or not that service is worth the extra cost is purely subjective. XBLA has many more quality exclusives than PSN, but PSN has a large catalogue of the PS1 games we already know and love.
Xbox Live has more features, but they're almost universally Gold only, and the PS3 packs a web browser.

The winner here really depends on your level of online usage and consumption of DLC. If you're a big fan of online multiplayer, you'll probably find the extra cash for XBL Gold money well spent. If you only dabble in online play from time to time, you'll find PSN more than sufficient to meet your needs. If you like to play new, small-budget indie titles, you'll find more of them on XBLA. If you prefer to relive 32bit classics, PSN is the way to go. XBL gets a lot of timed exclusive DLC first, but they usually end up on PSN eventually.
XBL also has a tremendous amount of indie games in XBLI.

Controller
Again, largely subjective. It's all but inarguable that the 360's D-Pad blows and the PS3's triggers are inferior, but that's were reasonable comparison ends. Do you prefer a smaller and lighter controller, or something a little bigger with more weight? Do you prefer the positioning of the PS3's analogue sticks, or the 360's? It's worth noting that the 360 wireless controller requires either AA batteries or a play & charge kit.

Hardware & Additional Features
The old 360s crap out and die a lot. There's no arguing this. They also come without built-in wireless. Is it still worth bringing this up, though? The only point in comparing the consoles is to either make yourself feel better about the purchase you made - in which case you get to shut up - or to try to decide which console to purchase. Since the new 360s have been rolled out and they don't have either of those problems, and this thread is about which console the OP should purchase, the old 360's hardware troubles are a non-issue unless you're buying a pre-owned system.

As for additional features, this area is, again, purely subjective. I do feel the PS3 has the upper hand, with Blu Ray playback and the potential for 3D gaming edging out things like XBL's features and Avatars, but for someone who doesn't care about playing Blu Ray or has an SDTV, the 360 might be a better choice.

In Closing:

With the consoles so evenly matched, there are only two really important things you need to consider before making a choice. The first is: which exclusives do you prefer? Does Little Big Planet 2's level creator look like the best thing ever, or are you itching to get behind a gun in Halo: Reach?

But most importantly: Which system do most of your friends have? If your friends are all playing on PSN, you don't want to be the only one sitting on XBL looking at an empty friend list. Likewise, if your friends all have 360s, you'll find that while your PS3 will read Blu Rays, it certainly won't read any 360 games you borrow from your friends.

Ok, this late in the game, i would go for a ps3, it will last longer, playstation has a ten year plan like the ps2, so you still have about 5-6 definate years of full support for your money, And seeing as game producers have finally figured out the architecture, its likely you will see a lot more games like uncharted 2 and killzon3 with unbelievably good grafix and possible better, wheras the 360 (still great grafixs) is effectivly maxed in what it can do, both processor and disk size) and will have to start going multidisk for almost all games, huge installs, or bring out a new console in the much more short term than playstation would.

Besides that, more and more blurays are being made and are getting cheaper, if you may get a 3dtv you will get 3d gaming and you get a browser with flash support built in the ps3 for watching online movies, And it plays all formats of movies from external memory which i find very useful.

Okay escapists, I've finally tired of just owning a Wii. I've just started my medical career which will have me on call at least 7 days out of the month and Imma need some serious quality video games to fill my time with. I am hoping for backwards compatibility. I could care less about most of the Metal Gear games and, Zelda aside, I hate RPGs.

So I was thinking I'd either get a used system or a new one with a decent hard drive. I know that ever since Sony made the PS3 affordable they also snatched away backwards compatibility, so I'm leaning towards a used PS3 or else a 360, buuuttt...

What about the failure rate of the early models? It's not like I can warranty a used console, and both systems had a greater-than-50% failure rate for nearly a year.

So, what do you think?

I love the Splinter Cell games and anything with stealth, FPSs, retro games, I loved the Sands of Time games and I love games with 4-player split-screen support.

Thanks in advance.
Hmm well first off PS3 never had a greater than 50% failure rate, I know 360's had a high failure rate, but IDK if it ever topped 50%...

anyways, I'd recomend PS3 because I prefer 90% of the games, its got free online, and since you are already looking to save money by getting a used one, I assume you dont want extra hassles. In my opinion the PS3 is far better, but I am not gong to lie I kinda wish I had Left 4 Dead 2. But other than that I'm fine.

Haha, well no. I can promise you that it hasnt hit 50%. I have dozens of friends who have ps3's and only one has actually had his die, (it was still in warrenty though so he got a new one for free) And I've had mine for almost 3 years now with no problems. I know for a fact that it hasnt hit the 30% failure mark, much less the 50%. If you can show me an actual source for that statement then that would be far better, because I can easily google the failure rate of the 360's.

people always say this, why?
OT: PS3 I own both and honestly its better, better exclusives, free online, better graphics, and blu ray disks so no switching disks in big games
