360/Xbox One is probably the best way to go. They have the best support out of all of them, and the button prompts in games, most of the time, particularly in games older than the current gen, show up as X/B/Y/A.

If you prefer the Playstation controller, I am sure that you can get it to work, but it is just a lot simpler to use an Xbox pad, really.

I've been using ps4 controller (dualshock 2) with my PC as well as https://inputmapper.com/ (its a new version of the ds4windows mentioned above) and i am honestly struggling with finding any games where i would prefer it over mouse and keyboard.

No it doesn't help much in Rocket League. No the rumble (the feature i wanted the most) doesn't work 50% of the times.

The only two games with which the controller actually helped were Distance (arcade racing game) and Dynasty Warriors 8/Empires(because its a horrible console port anyway).

If you want my advice - buy Steam controller. At the very least you are guaranteed that it WILL work with most of the games on Steam and will have support for rumble and other features so you won't have to use any additional software.

The PS4 controller is one of the best controllers I've used with PC, get Input Mapper and it will mask itself as a 360 controller.

Added bonus: The touch pad acts as a trackpad and will help navigate steam and emulators.

Second favorite so far is the Logitech F310, has a xbox 360 mode and direct input. Better than the 360 controller in some ways...like a good D-pad, but wonky triggers.

All comes down to personal preference. I favour the XBone/360 controllers over the Sony ones but only cause I've been gaming with them longer. It's no surprise that the Xbox controllers work more seamlessly with Windows though.
