Definitely one of the best RPGs ever. Get a few texture packs and the Morrowind Graphics Extender to spruce up the graphics and then prepare yourself.
I couldn't get that damn Graphics Extender to install right....perhaps you would have a different link?

As for the OP: Buy it, now, love it, forever.

Here you go:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/

That's the very latest version. I think this one also has a new and rather extensive Read Me that should hopefully be a lot of help. At least, more of a help than I'd be. :)

Absolutely 100%. It was the game that turned me onto fantasy RPGs. It starts pretty slow but the game WILL reward you if you stick with it. It's certainly in my top 3 favorite games of all time.
This man speaks the truth! I had a lot of fun with that game, especially raiding all the treasuries in the capital.

It is slow, it has a steep learning curve (but it gets pretty easy once you figure out certain things), has dated graphics and takes allot of time. But is so so incredible. Really it will suck away so much of your time. I would say for $5 it's worth just experiencing it.

God yes, buy it now! For 5 bucks there's probably nothing else on the planet that will get you more hours of playtime than Morrowind.
You seem to forget TF2. Also, my most played game would be Warcraft III: Frozen Throne. It's a strategy game, but if you get into multiplayer, you wont get out very soon. I spent years with that game and I could still go play it if it wouldn't be for new, somewhat more interesting games. I don't know about the price though.

Also, moving on to Morrowind, I would like to know about the size of the main story. I liked Oblivion, even though I never completed it and I loved Fallout 3 even though it was too short. Can anyone tell me is Morrowind more like Oblivion or Fallout (in the main story length) or somewhere in between?

Morrowind is one of my favourite games of all time and it IS a masterpiece. However,if your not patient and prepared to drop ALOT of time in it then its probably not worth it for someone who has never played it before.

I'd recommend it with the same emphasis even if it was $100.

Morrowind is hands down my favourite game of all time.

No it's a boring brown world with laughable combat. Granted it has a good story but you move slowly, combat has to be moded or it's just impossible and the interface could not be more user unfriendly if it tried
Your ignorant post makes me want to flame you, but your avatar makes me want to congratulate you... So confused.

Stop,
hammer time!
(Can't) touch this.
Feel free to congratulate me and why is it ignorant? You must know that the world was very brown, the combat was terrible and I have never found such a terrible interface

The story is good though and I will not deny that and for the time it was massive, interesting and something completely new. However I played it 2 months ago and it just hasn't aged that well

Obvious in my opinion
Well for one thing the interface bit is kinda... strange. I have never really heard anyone complain about the interface, I never really notice it while I'm playing, which is as much as you can ask of an interface (goes for both pc and xbox versions). Now Armored Core 4, that's a game with a nightmarish interface.

The combat is great in that it's actually stat, and not skill based (gasp!) which is kinda half the point of an rpg, not like Oblivion's clusterfuck combat with it's ridiculous blocking mechanics. My sole complaint about Morrowind's gameplay mechanics is that it can be difficult to sneak around and particularly to properly backstab enemies. The thing that people don't seem to realize is that combat in Morrowind (and all true RPGs) is an abstraction. you see your character's disembodied arm flailing a sword around in some dude's face, and only occasionally "hitting", but what's actually going on may be a display of frantic swordplay as said dude parries your attacks and counters and so on. But that is not visually represented by the game, because it (the combat) is abstracted. I wouldn't have it any other way either. But that's a debate/flamewar for another thread.

While Morrowind may be primarily brown, that does not stop it from presenting a very original and imaginative setting, along with a fairly unique aesthetic. I never played with any mods either, yet it is one of my favourite games of all time, along with quite a few others here it seems. It is somewhat ironic I suppose, that I actually disagree that it was "massive" (Daggerfall was much bigger, and other games such as fallout 1 and 2 and the infinity engine games presented somewhat smaller, but still rather huge, worlds that were just as, if not more thoroughly developed. Or that it was a "new" or particularly mind-blowing experience for the time. It's just a really good game.

No, you should not get Morrowind. I just did and now I want my money back. It has not aged well. Combat is even more tedious than in Runescape. I'm sure there's a brilliant story in here somewhere. But I think I'd rather put mu nuts in a vice than wade through the game to get it. Tedious. That is how I would describe this game. It only gets a one word description. I regret buying it on sale at 75% off. I would have regretted it if it were free.

While I do love the game, I can't disagree with this, the combat is shameful. Also the game doesn't naturally support widescreen monitors. And it crashes a lot. Such a wonderful game ruined.

Sure, it's a landmark game for me, I considered buying it just because it was on steam even though I've already owned it once. There's tons of places to see, and even has a few things up on Oblivion.

Those who are saying yes, have you played it recently or is it nostalgia talking for you? Probably doesn't matter, come to think of it. I used to have a lot of fun with morrowind, years passed, I played it again, and now want nothing to do with it. Sure, Oblivion was ruthlessly constricting at times, but interacting with friendly AI wasn't like escorting brittle-boned sheep through a wolves' den, lockpicking required your own skill in the same way combat did as opposed to "this number determines that even though your sword sticking out of your foe's spine, you missed!" In Morrowind, it was like the only thing I could fully control of my avatar's actions was movement. (minor complaint: this being the days before mo-cap, the running looks like that of a possessed puppet thing) Then there's the several mile hikes you have to take (unless you're blessed with a teleportation spell that sent you near your goal or you had been there before and marked it) to get anywhere, cliff racers not making your day(s) any easier.

I remember having more hate, but at least in Morrowind, when you level up, you're the only one and it's possible to find super-powered artifacts (you know, GOOD equipment you didn't have to wait until everyone else was carrying to get your own) to play with. 5 bucks is a pretty good deal and at the least it'll kill time, whether or not brain cells follow depends on you.
Tip: look up the Creeper glitch in Caldera, if you can.

Well, I've never even so much as played a single round of TF2 so I wouldn't know. I avoid online games like the plague. Warcraft 3 was pretty good fun, I'll give you that.
The Morrowind story is longer than Oblivion's (Fallout's too) and the world just feels much more alive. Yes, combat sucks but it's a small price to pay for such a great experience.
Just make sure you get a mod-able version, there's so many graphics and gameplay enhancements that perfect it.

I highly recommend it. Be warned though, if you are coming into the game fresh out of having played Oblivion you are going to be in for quite a shock. The game is unquestionably more difficult and involved than Oblivion, primarily in regards to combat. I can almost guarantee that you are going to HATE it for the first 5-10 hours, but once you get past that, it quickly becomes one of the most engrossing and immersive RPGs ever made.

I just received a sum of cash, but i'm using most of it, which leaves me with 5 dollars I can use. Question is, should I get TES: Morrowind, which is for sale at steam for 5 dollars? Is it a recommendable game?
I think that this person has just made the statment I was going to make:

Also the NPC are generally uninteresting with generic dialoge responses, the RPG elements are laughable, there isn't much customization, combat is boring and cannot be modded (I tried to find a mod but alas no result), and most of the areas feel copy-paste.
If you want a great RPG, I would recommend System Shock 2 or Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. I love those 2 RPG and I consider them some of if not the best ones.
