What the hell? She BIT you? In the BACK? That is a seriously bizarre confrontation.

But no, you shouldn't have retaliated. This "arsehole" probably sic'd his girl on you like an attack dog, knowing that you would only have two options: take it, or retaliate, and let him spread rumors about you that you beat up women. It's a clever strategy; either way, you lose, but you did choose the more honorable option.

And I hope you got that back wound treated. The human bite has all kinds of nasty bacteria in it; in terms of life-threatening infections it's even worse than most animal bites (rabies notwithstanding, of course). Be sure to finish your antibiotics if they've got you on any.

Yes, you should have retaliated. This is where the 'don't hit a girl thing' gets out of hand. Sure, never hit a girl if she's not doing anything to you. But if she's attacking you, then you have a reason to hit her back. Or at least shove her away, don't just take it because she happens to be a girl.

If all else fails and you think she would become more violent, defend yourself, but retaliating and escalating the situation never helps. I personally wouldn't have held such restraint. If someone attacks me, whether they're a girl or a guy, I will fight back, defend myself, fight dirtily (because there are no points for fighting cleanly, no matter how much my younger brother may protest), and try my best to do as much damage to them as I can.

However, you showed restraint, held yourself together, and refused to back down while also showing great maturity and strength of character. So you proved yourself to be the better and bigger person, and for that I congratulate you. You did what many people, myself included, wouldn't have done, and showed you are a mature guy. What you did was right, surprisingly, and as I say, well done to you for it .

Ok this has piqued my interest seeing as i've gone through a similar experience. Like alot of the comments have said, you should remain calm after the first few slaps, pulling hair etc.. but if it continues then you have to take action. Although i've noticed a couple of comments about snitching, which confuses me cause telling a teacher a student smokes is no new information in my school. anyway, from my experience it went on a couple of months before i pushed her head into a door, she wasn't expecting it cause i took the rest and now we get along just fine. Although by the sounds of it this guys a real wimp who'll bring his buddies to act hard, if you get him by himself knock his teeth out.

First defence: Your voice. What you should've done, is scream at the top of your voice, "BACK THE FUCK OFF, *****!"

second defence: a slight push. normally it takes more effort than it looks, but if you push with your middle two fingers into the gap in their throat, they will instinctively pull back. The best thing is it looks just like a push, but takes half the effort for twice the effect.

after these two things, if they're still coming after you, restraint. Get a hold of an arm, lock it down, put them under just enough pressure that they stop attacking, but without causing them any lasting bruises that they could use as evidence. not quite sure how to go about that bit, but im guessing twisting it behind the back would work best.
