I'd go.

How could scotland possibly be cooler than australia?

It isn't possible.

When I move to australia, I will be named a hero for eradicating rabbits and the cane toad.

It really depends on where in Australia -

Canberra. If you want to be bored.
Melbourne. If you're into culture.
Perth. If you like the beach.
Sydney. If you like enjoy dealing with people.
Brisbane. If you can stand the heat.

Personally I'd only live in Melbourne. I've lived in Sydney and now live in New Zealand.
You forgot adelaide..

I live in perth and I hate it with a fiery passion, but most people who move here from somewhere else kinda like it. The main problem with it is there's nothing here. No local pubs, no nightlife, expensive booze, short shopping hours (the entire state shuts down at 5pm, nothing opens. worse on weekends. and even restaurants stop taking orders at 9), no arts/culture, fairly limited (but not non-existant) long-term career opportunities outside of mining, trades, and hospitality, almost no tourist attractions, no r-rated video games...

essentially a boring place, but if you're the sort of person who goes home every day after work/school and spends it inside with your family and a small group of friends and is happy to do that until you die (a majority of the worlds population as it turns out), then it's a good place to do it.

Do it. And keep your accent. The girls will go MAD for it.
Intriguing....
Believe it, most of my friends like guys with accents.

I say you're old enough to choose for yourself. As most people have said, it depends entirely on your own situation. But Perth is actually a nice place to live, quiet but nice.

As someone who moved from England to Australia I can say YES, do it.

Better places, better weather, better beaches. People are not so fucking grumpy and miserable and generally everyone is very easy-going and accepting of others in Aus.

The only cons here are the food, pathetic internet download quotas, and lack of an 18+ game classification (though you can always buy what you want overseas instead having a censored copy or not getting to play it at all)

There are a hundred things that will kill you, 99 of them live in Australian basements.

Joking aside, both are good opportunities. If you stay, you've got some independence (you'll still have family near-by right?), but you don't want to end up getting shitty job just so you can afford to live on your own.

If you go, it's a good opportunity for a "fresh start." Go to University. New friends, new adventure. Save some money. If you do it right, the Australian opportunity has broader opportunities for your future. Plus it makes Asia closer. Weekend in Bali, anyone?

If you value gaming then probably not.
It's posts like these that get me scratching my head in wonder. Sure, as an Aussie, I'm mightily pissed off that we don't have an R18 rating for video games and, as a result, a lot of acclaimed titles have been banned outright.

However, these R18 games aren't the be-all and end-all. There are plenty of other mature-rated games, as well as racing, simulator, RTS, ...the list goes on. The best games aren't all 18+.

It's a hot country, with an inhospitable environment (if you don't know what you're doing - or think you do), with plenty of creatures that can kill you. But then, 2 days after you decide to stay in Scotland, you could get hit by a truck and all the R18 games in the world wont mean dick.

Yes, do it. Sure it might affect your gaming habits but if that's high on your agenda then I think you need a lifestyle change anyways.

Well if you are deeply in love with the Internet, and I don't know about Scotland, but Australia has one of the worst Internet in the free world. Not only the censorship, but the Internet plans and phone plans are so shitty and they try to rip you off. Telstra is like a monopoly of fuck. You have to pay like 70 dollars for a 45 gigabyte plan, and if you go over it doesn't get cut off, it charges you 15 cents for every megabyte you use after that until your plan cycles.

If I was prime Minister all the execs in Telstra would all be in Guantanamo Bay.

I'd do it, personally. Try it for a year or two, have some crazy Aussie adventures. If you don't like it, you're old enough to move back to Scotland and strike out on your own. If nothing else, you'll get some awesome stories to tell your friends back in Scotland. Its a great opportunity and you have nothing to lose.

As someone from New Zealand I must say, you don't want to move to the West Island, they have big ugly spiders and no water.

Come to the real New Zealand, not the wannabies (haha, see what I did there? sounds like their Rugby team Wallabies... but it isn't!).

Seriously though, it's a place of good opportunity and a growing economy. It's not a bad place to go to.

Try TPG Internet, my household just signed up for a new monthly plan that has a 60G per month for $50. With no excessive usage charges.

And yeah the net here is shit. I remember living in Japan...$40 a month for unlimited downloads and superfast internet. /sigh

Pfft, Perth. Go to Sydney!

Also as an Aussie I've gotta say things aren't looking that great gaming-wise here. One old man Atkinson refuses to give an R rating for video games, despite being the only state GG with this conviction.

Also we're getting a centralised internet filter, which will put us in the rather lonely group of countries who actually have mandatory government internet censorship. I'm not some random sicko who doesn't want all his illegal pron gone. I just want to play games without any further disadvantages when it comes to latency. I want a good internet connection that won't cost me the world.
NO CLEAN FEED! ARGHADSIFHAGa

Also, the fauna and flora of this continent actively hates us. We have the deadliest spider (the habitat of which includes one of the most populated areas), some of the most deadly snakes, stinging plants, a really, really bright sun (you'll notice it if you're coming in from scotland).
Also let me say that the deadliest spider isn't something you can chase off with a broom. It can be very aggressive and has been known to chase people.

Then there's the jellyfish, though you shouldn't have to worry about them as they're on the gold coast. But seriously, there's the Irukanji which is about the size of my thumb and can hospitalise you. Then there's the box jellyfish, one sting from which can paralyse you in minutes and kill you in under an hour. Also we have a poisonous octopus, beat that.

Let me conclude by saying that this place is paradise and you couldn't make me leave it. Australia Day tomorrow woo! The holiday spoiled by its being at the end of the school holidays.

I really don't know because as much as I'd love to move there, I'd be leaving my friends behind etc and one man stands in my way....

Michael Atkinson!

EDIT: Just to clarify, I live in Scotland just now so I'd probably explode from the temperature differential alone

EDIT2: I'd be moving to Perth for those who were asking
I live in Sydney, but I have been to Perth, was not terribly exiting but then again i didn?t do much. games are more expensive but it depends on where you buy. you can get uncensored and banned games from outside the country cheaper than retail. its really your call. but please note that Perth is the most isolated city on earth. fun fact for my fellow escapists

I'd go in a second. The whole game thing can be easily got round by inviting mates to come out on holiday, free accommodation in return for a new game every now and then, seems fair.

The problem you'll have is people calling you Pom or similar (dunno about Scots, but down in the Channel Islands someone calling us English is cause for a kicking), and then finding a job down there.

If you go, good luck!

Move there, but first buy as many games as you can, because you will not be able to buy them down there...
