1: Australia is a fantastic place - I've been there on holiday about 4 times and it is a brilliant place.
2: I have friends who live in Sydney and they like it even more then here in Singapore, one of the cleanest, greenest and safest cities in the world.
3: Australia is the 2nd happiest nation in the world, survey show.
4: Don't wory about the climate difference, I moved from Scotland to Singapore, which is about 100 miles off the equator (average temperature: 30 degrees C. Average Humidity: 75%) and I was fine after a couple of months.
5: It's great to be able to holiday around Asia instead of Europe for a few years until you return, or even if you don't - it provides a great opertunity to experience new cultures and meet new people, while still keeping in touch with those back home.
All in all, I heartily recommend it and wish you luck in your adventure :).

Note: On reflection, I can actually see 3 negatives -
1. Micheal Atkinson - but you can import games
2. Lots of dangerous creatures - but the chances of one getting you is like 0.000000000001%
3. The hole in the ozone is killer. I'm as white as milk, but even so I got burned to death out there by the UV even at 15 degrees when it was overcast. But wear sunblock all the time, even in these situations, and you'll be fine.
i still recommend giving it a try - I know from experience that, while tough at first, moving around the world is a great experience.

Going to move to Australia, as long as you don't mind people taking the piss out of you, and people with barley a scrap of scotch in them bang on about whatever clan their great great grandmother was in, should be fine.
PS if you find Australians insulting you for no apparent reason and pausing they're waiting for you to respond in kind......Not a punch in the face.

We Australians are a tough breed. and here are reasons why

Sports are second nature. We have a national sport which no other country in the world has BECAUSE IT WAS DEEMED TO MANLY FOR ANY OTHER COUNTRY TO HAVE.

Even our economy is manly ABLE TO RESIST THE EFFECTS OF THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS due to the overwhelming awesomeness only the weak immigrants were affected thus increasing our manliness.

Our national hero is a guy WHO WRESTLES CROCODILES FOR A LIVING, he died trying to wrestle a stingray with ONLY THE USE OF HIS TEETH.

Our actors are manly, BEATING UP REPORTERS WITH TELEPHONES.

Even our history is manly, being way to awesome for the UK to handle they were sent over here to be killed by the wildlife, ONLY TO BEAT THEM TO DEATH WITH NOTHING BUT THEIR BARE HANDS. The UK saw us as so manly in World War 1 they decided to send us on a suicide mission ONLY FOR US TO SUCCEED and when the UK saw that we won tried to do the same ONLY TO BE PUSHED BACK and forced our manliness to go with them.

We also have Saxton Hale ONLY THE TOUGHEST ************ TO HAVE EVER LIVED.

If you want to come over here, you must be a manly man or you will perish.

Come to Melbourne. All we do here is party and Atkinson has no power over us. Perth is nice too, but it can become very boring very quickly.

On one hand you have the Mana Bar, and the awesomeness that is Australia. On the other you have micheal Atkinson and very censored everything. Your choice.

I like the country, except for Atkinson... But I would never change countries anyway. Lose all my friends, every relative, my best friend for over half my life, my girlfriend. You get the idea. But the ban isn't that serious, it's just scary about how far he could take it, and infuriating how stupid he really is.

All the stuff about dangerous creatures is pretty bullshit. Sure, there are a couple of spiders around, snakes, whatever. But noone has died from a Funnel Web spider bite since the 80's, and with a bit of common sense nothing else is anywhere near a problem. I've only seen two or three snakes in my life, its not exactly as if they're roaming around city in the pouches of kangaroos.
Yeah the availability of anti-venom means the only way any spider's killed someone in australia for like twenty years is dropping down from sun visors in cars and scaring them shitless so they crash their car, or something like that. But this doesn't matter, I'm a major wuss when it comes to spiders even if they won't kill me I don't care, I don't want to be near them if they're too big and when I went they were far far too big. It's not the danger, it's the size.

I suppose they become part of the scenery after a while, but I'd rather just stay here.

I just got asked by my parents if I want to move to Australia.
My dad has a job opportunity there.
Is that a good idea?

I really don't know because as much as I'd love to move there, I'd be leaving my friends behind etc and one man stands in my way....

Michael Atkinson!

EDIT: Just to clarify, I live in Scotland just now so I'd probably explode from the temperature differential alone

EDIT2: I'd be moving to Perth for those who were asking
I've lived in Perth my entire life. What do you want to know? Post or PM any questions.

I live in perth and I hate it with a fiery passion, but most people who move here from somewhere else kinda like it. The main problem with it is there's nothing here. No local pubs, no nightlife, expensive booze, short shopping hours (the entire state shuts down at 5pm, nothing opens. worse on weekends. and even restaurants stop taking orders at 9), no arts/culture, fairly limited (but not non-existant) long-term career opportunities outside of mining, trades, and hospitality, almost no tourist attractions, no r-rated video games...

essentially a boring place, but if you're the sort of person who goes home every day after work/school and spends it inside with your family and a small group of friends and is happy to do that until you die (a majority of the worlds population as it turns out), then it's a good place to do it.
This post here has something to it. I'd contend that it's a little dramatic, but there's a lot or truth to it. Let me play devil's advocate though.
Firstly, people who move here generally do seem to like it. Sometimes I wonder how since I agree it's a little boring, but perhaps there's something to this place that I take for granted, like oxygen.
There is nightlife, but it's confined to a region just a few blocks north of the city (which, thanks to terrible city planning which has only in the last few years been made irreversible, those dumb f***ing F***ERS is only about a dozen blocks long and four f***ing blocks wide *fumes*) called Northbridge. That's where you'll go for clubbing. There's one casino. Pubs are dotted around the (vast) suburban areas. In short, nightlife is lacking compared to any major city, but it's there.
The shopping hours are a little more complicated now. Yes, we mostly close at 5. However, this isn't true for the city, and the state government is changing that. After a failed referendum to lengthen shopping hours, the government is now introducing it "by stealth". A few suburbs around the city (including mine!) have had their hours extended; and more are planned.
Our beaches are quite lovely. Perth isn't well known compared to "The Gold Coast" but it's just as good.
Few tourist attractions, except the fake ones successive governments have been setting up along the river. Ignore them.
We are the most isolated capital city in the world. This means there's no quick visits to Melbourne for a change of scenery (unless you've got the cash for that).
No R-rated games, but it's really overstated on these forums. I possess an uncensored copy of L4D2 which I ordered from overseas for cheaper than in the stores, Michael Atkinson be damned. Most technically 'R' games usually get under the radar as MA. I personally think this is worse for unsuspecting parents and their kiddies than having an R rating, but that's moot for your purposes.
Finally, bear in mind that WA is the boom state of Australia. In economic - and population - growth we lead the country. Yes, Perth is basically a jumped up mining town, but it's only a matter of time (and PROPER URBAN PLANNING YOU F***ERS) before that changes. And if you really don't like it you can always move east once you're out of high school/uni.
And if you're interested in LANs, a friend of mine organises ~30 man 360(/PC) LANs every few months. Just in case you were worried about gaming prospects. :p

Do it. And keep your accent. The girls will go MAD for it.
Intriguing....
uh, actually everyone makes fun of it at first (well, they did with mine) but after a while they'll love it, it's nice to hear a good ol' Scottish accent outside MW2.

It really depends on where in Australia -

Canberra. If you want to be bored.
Melbourne. If you're into culture.
Perth. If you like the beach.
Sydney. If you like enjoy dealing with people.
Brisbane. If you can stand the heat.

Personally I'd only live in Melbourne. I've lived in Sydney and now live in New Zealand.
You forgot adelaide..
Says it all doesn't it?

(Actually I kinda like Adelaide but I think it's only for an older crowd.)
