Should I preorder Bioshock infinite despite the controversy of Aliens?

I told myself after all the out roar of Aliens that I would stop preordering games and waiting, but the steam prepurchase will most likely come with TF2 items, bioshock and Xcom Enemy Unknown, which if I sold Xcom to my friend would end up with it costing £20. I don't know what to do about it.

Ask yourself what you would gain by preordering. Then ask yourself if that's worth the risk of having putting down money for something that could not be what you're expecting it to be, or even absolute shit.

Personally, I'm against preorders, simply because there's so little to gain from them. It's not like it's difficult to find a game on launch day, and I have yet to see a preorder bonus that I would actually go out of my way to get, or that shouldn't just be in the game to begin with. So why deal with the risks of preordering something if there's nothing to gain from doing so? Plus, there's the whole encouraging bad business practices thing.

I would never encourage somebody to preorder something, but then again, it's not like I can control what you spend your money on.

Notably Bioshock, the TF2 items, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown are only given to you if the game reaches the third tier of pre-orders by March 26th. It's likely that you'll get Bioshock since it's pretty close to the first tier, but there's no guarantee whatsoever of getting the TF2 stuff or XCOM.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

Right now Gamer's Gate offer Bioshock for free with it, as well as one choice of Spec Ops The Line, The Darkness 2, Civilization V, BioShock 2, and Mafia 2. It's actually a fair deal, if you ask me.

This gaming community reminds me of airport security. One guy had a bomb in his shoe, now we all have to take our shoes off. It is a bit ridiculous.

I allow the possibility that Bioshock Infinite might be mediocre and disappointing, but I would never expect it to be actually bad. So far many things in the game gave me shivers and the Bioshock feel and I am going to buy this regardless of reviews. Alone the skyrails should be worth the money, not to speak of the promising story.

I would ask how big of a Bioshock fan you are. If are pretty lukewarm about it, then you could wait for a couple months I guess, but lose on the bargain.

Here's how I approach pre-orders.

Forget about pre-order bonuses, save for proper discounts. I only ever bother to pre-order through Amazon because they frequently offer up $10 pre-order bonuses and I just recently scored a $20 pre-order bonus on Crysis 3. If a pre-order bonus is really all that, you'll be able to pick it up later as DLC. Usually they're not worth such consideration.

Treat it exactly as you would a DVD or a book. If you're so excited by it you must experience it on release, then pre-order it with whatever pre-order bonus scheme you like best.

Pre-order as late as possible so you're privy to any negative pre-release buzz. Turkeys in any medium rarely hit the shelves without a few warning signs. Cancel any pre-orders you have if you experience any kind of sinking feeling prior to launch.

If you're uncertain about the title in any way, wait for the reviews before giving them your money. If you're backed up on games, wait a bit, pick it up when it drops $20 a month later, then pick up any pre-order bonuses you fancy with the money you saved.

The problem really isn't pre-orders. It's companies doing everything they can to hide a turkey until it's too late, because there's simply too much money on the line to do otherwise. As always, buyer beware, and don't let yourself get suckered by a trivial pre-order bonus when you've got concerns about the underlying product.

I completely agree with you, but the preorder bonuses for this game are something I actually want and would also save me money, I'd be getting the game for half the price and I can't decide whether that is worth the risk.

I think the smartest thing to do in this particular situation would be to wait and see what bonuses will be offered with preorder rather than just assuming there will be some. Don't promise yourself money or your friend a game until you're sure.

If I decide to preorder I will wait until the rewards have been achieved and will wait for reviews, but due to how many people want this game I believe it is safe to assume it will reach all the reward tiers.

But that's what they always do with marketing, I thought back in 2011 that Dead Island was going to be a genre defining zombie game because of the trailers and reviews but it was a let down and I lost a lot of money. Aliens was also shown off as an amazing true to life alien film experience but Gearbox didn't follow through. So the game could always be bad.

And I don't have much of it so I decided to ask a third party on their opinion.

You've got it there, triple A developers are trying harder and harder to avoid showing any game play footage whatsoever in the advertisements, id software said a demo hurts sales because it allows users to test the gameplay before they buy it and that will lead them to not buying it if it is not of high enough quality. A preorder would cause no concern if you got an in depth look at the game engine and the writing before you part with your money.

While I'm skeptical on the accuracy of the so-called gameplay footage shown in previews, at least you can look at the existing Bioshock game and know that they've done quality work in the past.

Then again, Gearbox made the Borderland games which were pretty good. I suppose Duke Nukem forever would have been the thing to ring the warning bells for Colonial Marines.

I don't know why you thought we know better than you if you'd feel the price justify the enjoyment you get. If you ask me, then no - don't preorder it. But also you shouldn't be asking me, since I almost never preorder stuff or even get them early after release. I'd rather wait 6 months or a year and possibly pick up whatever it is I want on a sale or otherwise when I finally feel like it. However, I am not you, and you can, and may very well do, feel differently about it. Case in point, you're actually thinking of preordering, I am not. So we come back to it - it's your money.

If you really want the preorder bonuses, whatever those might be, then go ahead. Just don't feel disappointed if the game is crap.

Unrelated note: Whenever I hear about bioshock I keep remembering this.(Probably because I've never played the games)

You really can't predict how good a game will be based on the awesomeness of another franchise. Borderlands promised more of the same, only better and that's exactly what you expect from a good sequel. They still haven't proved they can deliver a great linear shooter.

I am pretty sure thta the pre-order rewards will go at least to tier 2. When i preordered (first time i pre-order a game) mine, it was 91 % of the first tier. I did my pre-order at 2:00 p.m.. Now it's 3:40 p.m. and it's now at 98 %.

That post was more of a general guideline than specific to Bioshock: Infinite, as I had no idea what the preorder bonuses actually are (I'll admit I didn't read the op very closely). Those actually seem like pretty fair preorder deals, assuming you are reasonably certain that you are getting the game in the launch window.

I personally wouldn't take those deals (because I'm a cheap bastard that isn't super interested in Bioshock: Infinite, and can wait half a year for it to get cheaper), but I guess I won't criticize someone that does. Understand, though, that it is still a risk getting the preorders, no matter how good the bonuses are or how good the game looks.
