Personally, I don't preorder games, period. But if I did, Bioshock: Infinite would be near the top of the "this will almost certainly be fine" pile for me. I'm inclined to trust Ken Levine.

OT: Anyway, I don't think so. Never pre-order. You can always buy it at launch day if it gets good reviews.
If that's the ending I'll be quite upset with you

Come on its Bioshock, I'd be very surprised if Bioshock Infinite turns out to be anything less than a great game but there's always that chance I suppose. Do whatever you want but I personally have already preordered it.

No you shouldnt and Im gonna tell you why. You wouldnt be asking us if the potential loss of $60 wasnt important. Obviously you care about your investment and youre not in a position to not care if the games horrible. If the game turns out to be absolutely terrible youre going to be missing that money that could have been put toward a game or a few games that you know are good. The other reason you shouldnt is because if you keep preordering this junk companies will keep trying to make you preorder it, cutting stuff from the games just to make you gamble on whether or not a game is good. If they really wanted to add these items they could make them achievments or unlockables but they arent doing that so they can get you invested in a game you know next to nothing about and as we all know when you only know about 10% of a game your brain makes the other 90% seem awesome

So no, you shouldnt preorder anything unless its actually giving you a noticible discount. If you do buy one well you're gambling and gambling is known for not paying off

Pretty sure =/= guaranteed.

Frankly, if people are pre-ordering with the expectation to get the tiered bonus stuff... ugh. Playing right into the publishers' hands.

You can get Bioshock for a fiver in the next Steam sale, and putting down money in the hopes that enough people put down money to get XCOM is too much.

If you want to play a game sooner rather than later and want to save some money and get a few freebies, then pre-order.

As a studio, I don't think Irrational will engage in as much fakery as Gearbox did with Aliens.

That said, I'm personally a bit disillusioned at the moment with sequels after Assassin's Creed 3 wasn't everything I hoped it would be. So with Bioshock Infinite and Dead Space 3 I've decided for a change to wait it out a little bit, see how the review aggregate goes and maybe buy new sequels once the prices drop a bit. If you can train yourself to wait a bit (hard to avoid spoilers sometimes) it's only a good thing. You'll minimise disappointment vs. amount of money spent.

Avoid pre-orders, avoid buying it when it's first out. Wait six months - the reviews (and backlash, if there is any) will be out, mulled over, argued over, and people who know you will be able to give personal recommendations. Also, it will have gone down in price, all the patches will be out (and the inevitable bugs ironed out). With patience, you're not only sure of not buying a turkey, but you'll be buying a better game when first released and paying less for it.

Plus, if the develops do turned out to have participated in anti-consumer shenanigans, but you still want to play it, you can buy it second hand and deprive them of any cash.

Patience is a win win scenario

I have to ask, have you not been following Bioshock Infinite? Like, at all?

I mean, Colonial Marines slapped out one demo a week before it released in order to cover up what a terrible game it was. Infinite has been around since 2011, and you just don't spend two years hyping up a game as intellectual as Infinite is looking to be.

In the end, it's your money, and I wouldn't hold it against you if you decided not to pre-order it, but I really don't think you're going to be bitten by this.

Reminds me, actually - I pre-ordered Infinite at my local Gamestop a couple of years ago. I wonder if it's still there.

You probably won't lose your money, on the other hand, if people stopped preordering then publishers might stop focusing on them so much and try to find ways to pick up sales post release.

On the other other hand, realistically their will always be some preorders to pick up and it's unlikely anything will make them stop

Same here. And I pre-ordered that giant-ass Songbird edition.

I know Colonial Marines has people second guessing preorders. I sympathize, cause I preordered it and I've played the results. But, that's the only time I've really felt burned by preordering and I preorder a lot of games. So, I'm not going to let one bad experience sour me.

That might actually be an interesting twist...

Im not agianst pre-ordering, but I'm pretty cautious when I do. Before I even think about pre-ordering I look at the developers, what other games they have released (and play them if I am able to) read up on as much as i can regarding the game to see if its something I'm interested in, and ask if its something i would be ok to wait out for reviews or price drop/sale for. Ive never felt burned on a pre-order cause I'm super cautious. Portal 2, Skyrim, Mass Effect 2 and 3, and the witcher 2 are the only games ive pre-ordered and ive loved all of them. Additionally the main reason i pre-order in the first place is cause I rarely have $60 - $80 (depending on if i want the collectors edition) on hand so i prefer to just pay off the game when ive got some extra money over the course of several months.

I've pre-ordered Bioshock Infinite

Well Aliens was a shitty game in degelopment Hell, this is a Bioshock game being developed by Irrational, and not being worked on by the team that did Bioshock 2 (which sucked).

No. For the love of god no. Don't pre-order. Don't tell the publishers 'it's okay to use shoddy, grey-area business practices' by pre-ordering. Whatever little bonus you get from it is not worth it. And if the game is indeed good, what's the harm in waiting 1 or 2 days longer to buy your game? Or are you really that impatient that you want your games RIGHT NOW DAMMIT!! (Most gamers today seem to have that mentality.)

How patient are you? Can you stand waiting a half year or more when everyone you know is talking about how great Infinite is? If yes, get the GOTY edition with all the DLC for 20 pounds on a steam sale.

The question shouldn't be "Should I preorder Bioshock infinite despite the controversy of Aliens?" because the answer is irrefutably NO!

Your question is "Do I risk wasting money on a game I may not like, for Pre-Order bonuses that I may not get?" because really the only benefit to Pre-Ordering these days is the tacked on crap.

So my answer to your question, Do you really want Bioshock, Frivolous TF2 vanity items, and XCOM AND Is this the only way you can see of getting these items for a reasonable price?

Ultimately it's up to you.

While I'm skeptical on the accuracy of the so-called gameplay footage shown in previews, at least you can look at the existing Bioshock game and know that they've done quality work in the past.

Then again, Gearbox made the Borderland games which were pretty good. I suppose Duke Nukem forever would have been the thing to ring the warning bells for Colonial Marines.
GBX should be sticking with their own ip's imo.

OT: Honestly, look to what the pre-order gives you as a bonus and even then I can't wholeheartly recommend doing it since ACM's failure.
Do hope Metro Last Light doesn't lie to us, have it on pre-order since a couple of months.

In regards to Steam at the very least, if the X-Com deal goes through it'd probably be worth it right there, that game is proven to be good and is still full price in most places.

WaitWHAT said:
Also: just because the supreme hive-mind overlord Jim Sterling says it's a bad idea, doesn't mean that you have to throw all pre-orders into a pit of burning lava.
I agree with this sentiment, sometimes I think if a prominent member of the gaming media argued the benefits of swan diving off a cliff our little culture would run the risk of becoming a lot smaller.
