I've heard rumours that it bogs your system down and they steal your data and it's probably true, but there's no way to get around it if you play Gmod or L4D.

I only use Steam to play Left 4 Dead online. I preffer to torrent or buy games, but im not gonna say anything bad about Steam since it hasn't done anything wrong to my computer. I dont like having it on my computer but as long as it doesn't cause me any trouble, it can stay.

A program can't run if it's not open, but yes, STEAM does collect information about your PC to help decide what games to host and what will make them the most money. I'm pretty sure it only does it the first time you run it; they wouldn't constantly figure out information about your computer every day.

It's not harmful at all and doesn't harm your computer, it's something used to help benefit the user.

My best friend told me to get steam, and I've never had a problem with it. It's not like kazaa so it's perfectly safe, well nothing is really perfectly safe,

I really think that Steam is the wave of the future. Death to Gamespot! Overthrow the tyrants!

Once in a while, Steam will have surveys. In essence you put in your computer specs and Valve then has access to it. You can choose not to. It also doesn't bog your system down unless you have a 1.5ghz with 256mb of ram. Let's be realistic here, it never affects the performance of my games. And I run Steam on a P4 AGP system.

While we're all here, there's a question I'd like to ask. Can you install Steam without a internet connection. If someone could test it i would be very greatful

Dont use Steam. It's cheaper to buy the games from store or order them online through other shops. You also cant resell steam games.

Games have to be validated online before you are allowed to play.

This isn't for me. If i didn't have internet i couldn't be on The Escapist right now. My friend, doesnt need to validate anything. He just wants to know if Steam can be installed without internet.

No I highly doubt it. The Steam website offers a downloader that automatically downloads and installs the Steam app.

I've had steam since it was first introduced and never had a problem - even in the buggy early days. It makes it crazily easy to find games and play with friends, and even if a freind is doing somthing completelu different and your playing a game, you can still talk thanks to the overlay. It doesnt steal data, just hardware infomation which it then uses in surveys, and you have to consent to it. The drain on system reasources is minimal to point where it doesnt exist.
I love steam and by the look of it everbody else does too

I use Steam alot, and I recommend it. About the only two things you need to watch out for are:

- Unlike CD/DVD's, downloads can take a long time, depending on your connection and the size of the game in question. (not unique to Steam)

- Check the games can run on your laptop! If the laptop is old, its entirely possible it won't run the games, moreso if the graphics are integrated. My laptop can run most 2D games fine, but always struggles on 3D for this exact reason.

My dad is now letting me use his old Laptop and I was wondering about getting some games for it. I heard about steam and checked out the site. It was pretty cool but I'm still indecisive(I think that's how you spell it) about whether to use it. So should I?

What are the specs on your laptop?
