I've heard rumours that it bogs your system down and they steal your data and it's probably true, but there's no way to get around it if you play Gmod or L4D.
Not quite, yes, it does steal your data, things like what games you have and system specs. But unlike other companies Valve have the good grace to ask you first, if you don't want them to see, just click no.

Also, it doesn't slow down your PC much, if it's running badly I suggest a better spyware scanner.

Use it, it's safe and free.
There is something about that line and avatar I just don't trust...

Anyway, Steam is great. I have it, and have not had a problem with it. It keeps your games up-to-date, you can see online servers and chat to your friends. Only thing it's missing is the Milk and Cookies dispensor.

I just keep hearing about computer crashes and all that stuff. That's the main reason I wanted to know if I should use it, that's all.

Why not? It's good for getting games, it's good for friends, and if you want to play any Valve game, you have to use it. It also doesn't take up much space, so go ahead.

I've never had it crash. Ever.

Okay, it sounds good so now I'll just try to convince my parents to agree to sign up. Thanks for the advice everyone.

never had it crash either personally my favorite aspect is not needing the disks to install or run the game that right there is why I love steam

I want to love steam, I really do. This is probably more my fault, but a lot of the games on there, particularly based on the hl2 engine, have a tendency to crash and freeze my computer. Which is never fun.

I'll put it as simply as I can:
Ahem, YES!

Now, more detail: I upgrade and change my computer all the time, and, in case I have to reinstall the OS having steam makes it so all I have to do is install steam and log in and all my games are there waiting for me. You also get all your updates instantly, and you can download addons right from the store. It's almost like an Xbox marketplace or PS Network for your PC!

Even if you don't buy your games on steam, you can add non-steam games to your list, then, while playing, hit Shift+Tab and talk to your friends while playing. This is probably the best feature that Steam has, and I love it.

Oh, and it's not dangerous in any way, shape or form.

I've had quite a few friends have their steam ID's stolen by D-bags (they aren't looking to use them just to be dicks, they think it's fun.... they have conversations with the persons friends.) Just make sure you never open a link to the internet from steam unless you're sure it's your friend, if you're friend had been hacked, the link leads to yours getting hacked as well... it's a ***** to get back.

A 3 year necro, not bad, definitely one of the bigger gaps I've seen. We can go older though!

It's got shit prices unless it's a Steam sale then the price is 75% off. I only buy from it when there's a sale or if I can't be arsed waiting for delivery from Amazon.

EDIT: What the fuck? Just realised that this thread is 3 years old, who woke this thread up?

Wow people. Are you all paid to say only good things about Steam?
I've tried Steam and have found zero use for it. But then again, I don't BUY any of my games either. Steam being required for pc gaming? Not if you know how to use Torrents. And Steam WILL Slow down your pc if it's older.

I really think that Steam is the wave of the future. Death to Gamespot! Overthrow the tyrants!
C'mon Spleeni, be a real rebel. Don't give any of these corporate bastards any of your money.

I'm sure you'll just have a lovely time on this site. Maybe next you can tell us how to get rid of those ads on the Escapist, right?

Steam is great. I have no complaints with it.

Wait, no I have ONE. ALL THESE SALES MAKE ME END UP BUYING STUFF I DON'T EVEN END UP PLAYING!!! :(

But that's a small complaint.

Necro'd thread aside, just before the summer sale is probably not the best time to install Steam
